Played EQ for a long time, got my beastie epics etc and even used to spam my theme song on Mith Marr (I actually had random people request it lol).
But, beasties aren't in original EQ so I will probably roll a ranger. I look forward to seeing you all in game.

Why, thank you so much for telling me how I should have some fun! If you would like, please state exactly what I should play and how I should play it so I can just go ahead and quit playing before I get to level 4.

Ranger is a good beastlord alternative. I love hybrids, bards, and my ultimate archetype is a melee character who fights with an animal companion. EQ doesn't have this so Ranger and Bard are good alternative :D

Beastlord as a class would be really powerful in classic eq. Their pets were comparable to mage pets on top of incredible utility they brought to the table - slows, buffs, their own dps (mediocre) along with kitty crack.

I think the people who don't like Beastlords are only looking at it from the "What can you do for ME" perspective. I absolutely loved soloing the class and I belonged to a pretty good guild on Mith Marr who I did a little raiding with. Most BLs I knew were also in guilds but were of the same mindset as far as solo: "If I can't find a group, I can go it alone".

I played a BL from PoP onwards and loved it, most of the utility of a shaman but with the ability to put out some big melee damage with you and the pet.

If moon cats ever occurred I'd be on it like a tramp on hot chips (a phrase that won't make any sense in the US)

Man I wish it did make sense that sounds hilarious

The North American way to say it would be "like a bum on hot fries".

They made for a very versatile class but suffered from the hybrid phenomenon. They could slow but 2 classes did it better. They had shaman buffs though shaman could do it better. BL was great for solo, duo and trio. For min/max groups, groups were just built in ways that made their perks irrelevant. Having a shaman basically relegated them to melee/pet/regen. Their heals were actually not bad - they got chloroblast from velious along with their overpowered pet heals.

On a classic eq server their pet would do sufficient damage by itself to warrant a group spot, however. They would pair nicely with enchanter as they bring shaman buffs to the table and can take the burden of slowing off the enchanter.

BL was my first main in eq. I was an altaholic and never got a class past 42 until I played my favorite class to date. They're pet's were closer to necro pets in strength than mages though. They also had the benefit of being fairly wanted for groups due to their versatility. It's been a long time since the luclin pop era of playing one but I remember them being on par or better DPS than monks till at least end game AAs and gear.
