Using the process described HERE (http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=12623) I created an alternative snd2.pfs that has many of the lower quality sounds upgraded in quality and I also replaced a few sounds with VERY similar, but higher quality sounds. Most importantly, I replaced all the most annoying sounds.

I DID NOT change any sounds that make EQ awesome. All spell sounds as well as most UI sounds remain the same. Also a few of the movement sounds were too good to be replaced. Specifically the couching sound and the landing on the ground sound.

I significantly changed a few sounds from their previous state as I believe they were just plain annoying. The main offender was the thunder sound! That thing was driving me crazy!! The new version is much more subtle and pleasant.

Also the howling wind sound has annoyed me a great deal, so the new version is quieter and also has a more "lonesome" tone to it.

Finally the the underwater sound was sampled to low and sounded compressed and nasty. The new version is almost relaxing and of very high quality. Sadly it still only plays one time through before ending. I think something is wrong on the client that makes it do this.

Most of the combat sounds have been replaced with more realistic sounds.

I intend to eventually go through all the .pfs files and replace any low quality sounds with better ones, but for now this one file will make many people happy I think.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download this: Mirror 1 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9X22NOER) Mirror 2 (http://hotfile.com/dl/103808660/4f11634/snd2.zip.html) Mirror 3 (http://www.mediafire.com/?lrr3979l4zpt3ig)
2. Extract the archive.
3. Rename the old snd2.pfs in your [EverQuest directory]* to "old_snd2.pfs"
4. Place the new snd2.pfs into your [EverQuest directory]*
*The EverQuest directory is normally located at "C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest\" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\EverQuest\"

I'm not sure how I feel about it...So used to the sound of getting hit etc that its just weird to hear something different.

The change-looting sound is kinda cool, but the being punched sound sounds pretty bad. It feels like there's some kind of static/distortion at the end.

edit: I'm starting to warm up to it actually.

I'm not hearing any footstep sounds at all. Were these simply removed?

MOBs and NPCs make sound for me. PCs don't though. Not sure why that is, but I don't recall ever hearing PC footsteps. NO sounds are missing from this update. If they are not playing, something client side is going on.

This is cool thanks. I spent a lot of time in highkeep and the constant thunder was really getting on my nerves. With this the thunder doesn't even seem to play unless I go out in to high pass, and there I can hear it but it sounds much nicer. It sounds like rolling distant thunder.

Also I think the rain sound is better too? The melee sounds are good too, although as a caster I don't hear that much anyway.

I do miss the PC footsteps though, but I can live with that. Not sure what else is new, but I'll stick with it and see what else I discover and I will probably end up keeping this instead of the original.

Thanks again.

I second what Batkiller said. I miss the PC footsteps but enjoy the overall better sounds - escpecially the thunder. (I didn't find the original thunder annoying, but the new one is just awesome, hehe..)

So, thank you! :)

Old thread but still bump because relevant. The footsteps are gone as far as I can tell because they're stereo. I extracted then batch converted everything to mono and footsteps work again. Hopefully it's fine.

Tried these out, and while the footsteps are nice coming back, the overall sounds themselves sound kinda hollow, as though they're filtered through another speaker or something before being processed. Suppose it might be something on my end though.

No PC footsteps for me, but I'm using the original links (mirror3 worked). Was there an updated version in the last link a few posts above? that is no longer available.

shame the underwater sound doesn't loop but i have a suggestion for it

why don't you extend it? would love it if someone did that

Yep - it wasn't just the footsteps, too. If you installed the original patch, you may have lost the following sounds:

Bow being drawn and let loose
One-hand blunt swing woosh
Two-hand blunt swing woosh
Round kick woosh
Impaling woosh
Parrying with a blade
Whip cracking
Button being pressed
Inventory boxes opening and closing
Running footsteps
Walking footsteps
Climbing ladders
Rain and thunder
Jumping into water
Jumping out of water
Submerged underwater (loop)

About half of these weren't playing for me - not sure why some worked and some didn't, but in any case these were all rendered in stereo so I converted them to mono and repacked them into the .pfs file.

Does it fix the god-awful bag open/close noises?

I also toned down the insanely bassy, overamplified bag open/close sound.

I figured this out too - for some reason the client was reading the file for jumping into water as the underwater loop, so I just switched the file names around. No more constant splash sound while underwater, and now the underwater sound loops properly.

Download, extract to EQ directory, select overwrite: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/14728818/Project%201999/snd2fix.rar

Hmm, actually this didn't pan out exactly as I thought. I came up with a pseudo-fix basically by just replacing the treading water sound with the underwater sound loop, since the treading water sound loops properly. So same idea, different method - the treading water sound was pretty dumb anyway.

While I'm at it, I'll touch on the Lavastorm explosions - the main client being circulated online right now has the big explosion deleted, but some of you are like "ZOMG IT'S STILL THERE IT MAKES ME SHIT MYSELF" - well, that's the lesser explosion, which is still kinda loud, but nothing compared to the big one. The big explosion is thunder_rolling.wav contained in snd11.pfs, the lesser explosion is stomp_02.wav in snd11.pfs. The lesser explosion can still be kind of an earsore, especially if you have your sound turned up for any reason, so I'll go ahead and tone that down to a more tolerable level.

Correction - this actually wasn't deleted from the client, I incorrectly assumed they deleted it since they were trying to get rid of the big explosion sound. The sound files with this install are actually 100% the original Titanium install files, so I've uploaded them for those who want to revert: download, extract to EverQuest directory, select overwrite (this will also revert all volume levels, meaning loud bags & explosions): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/14728818/Project%201999/classicsounds.rar

Update!

Toned down the sound for opening and closing inventory boxes.

Level-corrected all wind tunnel sounds - some of these were mixed absurdly loud which is why in some places it was practically deafening.

Have you ever been driven mad near a pond or lake by the obnoxiously loud, repetitive water lapping sound? I fixed that too - there was a much better sound for this in one of the later sound archives which was mixed perfectly and actually sounds like the waves of a lake/pond subtly cascading against its shore.

I have been playing around with mods like Make EQ sound significantly better (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27308&page=3) but there is a couple sounds I would like to replace. The first is the woodland sounds you find in forest like East Commonlands, the one with the constant howling animal and crows. The other is the Feerrott sound of tree frogs constantly. There is also another one that triggers at night in East Commonlands of tree frogs I think and I would like to replace these with better versions that don't drive me crazy.

Any idea what these files are named?

How complicated is it to edit the WAV files inside the PSF files myself to make my own custom edits and then repackage them so that the game recognizes them?

I am enjoying most of the changes from this mod/files but the night forest sounds are so loud I have to turn down my volume. Also the footsteps are so STOMPY. The volume is bordering on too loud, but the sound itself ... that's something I'd give to combat armor in FO4 haha. I'm not hating on this great work, I wouldn't know how to do this, but just giving feedback.

Seriously though, I am going to try and figure out where the night forest (JUNGLE) sound(s) might be so I can yank that sucker. It's way over the top.
