Hello I am new and I installed Everquest Titanium from some disks i had, when i "extracted the Project 1999 required game file changes" to the EQ directory, my mcafee virus software quarantined a file and said it contained a Trojan. Can anyone give me any advice on this and tell me if this file is important or not?
The infected file seems to be dsetup.dll. Thanks! :)

Ya the file is important. You cant play P99 without it. Its P99's effective, yet controversial, anti cheat / boxing deterrent

Maybe someone should have mentioned it's a false positive and doesn't steal your personal info lol

Except it's not and it does.
That's the whole reason it's there

This man is correct, the DLL sniffs in the background picking up things like the processes running on the machine, Computer name, Where your EQ folder is located on the machine and much more I am guessing. The reason p99 is better at detecting cheaters/boxers than most MMO's is because what they are doing would not fly with a huge gaming company. Everyone who plays on this server has to trust the staff not to abuse this information/power in order to keep our server free of cheaters.

Windows Defender doesn't scan dsetup.dll as a virus. I dunno why everyone wants to use McAfee/Norton/Avast/AVG etc., I've never used those and I haven't had any virus troubles since Windows XP.

I guess I really should have defined "personal information"
They're not stealing from your bank or paypal or spreading your personal porn collection around.
It doesn't even run until you tell it to run.

its a pretty decent multi-use thing to make sure they can police the server properly. pulling process and file headers can give you a good amount of info without getting "personal" or whatever your definition is. example open your email, look at your header up top. I bet the header has your email listed. same goes for paypal.
Everyone trusts it because p99 is actually a legit non profit and its run by mature adults. Its not some russian basement dweller.

The sticky is more like cable news, an answer for the masses. This guy wanted a little more rundown on it as it tends to happen with skeptics.
The thread you linked is a half right though, most header/process scanners/checksum features will not test positive in an anti-virus as long as its part of a legitimate program. SOE used to have a scanner back in 99-2001ish but it lasted maybe a few weeks before people asked them to shut it down, they sent out a press release that they were removing it. My point being, SOE's scanner never tested positive.
But I'll agree to disagree on it being a misflagging. No reason to trash good software as a part of towing the company line, no offense to anyone intended.

The OP wasn't a matter of trusting P99 or not, just to clarify - he thought his dsetup.dll was legitimately infected by some kind of virus, and was wondering if he could just do away with the file altogether. He didn't think like, P99 *put* the virus there maliciously or something.

Your antivirus just found p1999's snooping code.
