Hello!
I've always thought that the Ogre and Troll models are somewhat ugly. When I look at
the art by Keith Parkinsson for EQ the ingame ogres and trolls look nothing like the art,
so I decided I was going to make my own ogre and troll models so the look more like the artwork. But I also wanted to keep the low-poly quality and feel of the original EQ
models.

So here follows some pictures of the ogre model so far.

I will probably pull the head upwards a bit more to give him a neck.

and here follows some reference art:

Notice how they are more muscular than the current models.

Let me know what you think, also, if anyone wants to make textures that would be
awesome!

Interesting post. Keep up the good work! I Would love to have more character models to download for the game.

I like it, looks like a good project :) Would the box art ogre have had slightly longer legs? Not trying to poke holes, just a thought :p

Yes, I was thinking the same thing, the proportions are not the best, and I am going to work on them a bit more.

Overall do you like the style and does it feel EverQuesty?

for reference, would you be able to post how the current ogre/troll polys look without textures?

Here is a reworked version of the ogre and some comparison shots:

The original ogre should be a bit wider, but the program messed it up.
The height is still correct though.

This is really cool. I have a 24 ogre warrior and I can't play it due to it's fatness and overall size tbh. Any change to this model would be an improvement imo. :)

I can't seem to find them, but there are some of the original alpha ogre models floating around somewhere. They looked similar to the ogres in the opening cinematic found at the 1:42 mark of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym9hIEbnijw

I really like the ogres and trolls I think they have tons of character, though I respect what you are doing. Are you intending to use these in the game?

dethret

Yes, I would like to use them in game, if its allowed. I also need to figure out how they
have structured their models, they seem to be split into different parts and the
texture is not one single image, but also split into pieces.

If anyone knows that would help alot, also if anyone is good at UV-Mapping and texturing
that would also be great!

btw, what about luclin ogre models?

Have a peek at this alpha EQ video from 1997, at around 1.20 there's what looks like a troll model and an ogre soon after >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ae-1KuAvMY

question,

if once your model re-works are finished, and you're able to use them, most def would be client-side change only visual. Will armor and stuff appear correctly on the re-worked models?

I have absolutely no experience with 3d animation and how they are implemented etc. Why couldn't I just replace the model files with any other model file just for my own client-side visual change?

Very cool btw, I srsly wish they would've went a more "low-poly, high-res" route with luclin models. I honestly think they would've gotten a much better reputation than what they did. smooth, round, undetailed surfaces are just so unpleasing to the eye imo.

The only luclin model that seriously bothers me is the troll. It has none of the character of the original really. The rest aren't too bad I guess.

I despise the stance the elves have, and they also all resemble eachother just different colors. Luclin models really were crap, are crap imo.

I agree, it looks like they are always leaning forward..like wtf

couldn't agree more. I forgot to mention, ON TOP of the sheer ugliness of smooth, round, absolutely zero detailed character model, the animations and general idle stances were HORRIBLE.

You just can't compete with iconic artstyle of the original models, seeing all the nitty gritty slime on their ugly fat faces, and gross, detailed skin textures with ugly toenails and stuff. Good shit

You have to give Blizzard credit for doing an excellent job with updating their character models with the Warlords of Draenor expansion. They still had the same artistic style and personality as before, just retextured. If only Sony would've done the same..

right, they decided to reinvent the wheel instead of improve upon the original models which were quite decent and unique already.

Call me crazy but I hated the new models in WoW too. One of the main reasons I can't play that game anymore. Just like the Luclin models they look good when standing still, but the animations are terrible.

Wretched faulty opinions. Ogres and trolls look brilliant as they are.

yeah I never could stand the luclin models they all looked like they were on steroids and slightly hunchbacked imo.

They should have just retexturized the original models and made them look a little better instead of completely reworking them. I had luclin models disabled well into PoP/GoD when I quit playing on live.

arent your source images giants and not ogres? pretty sure they don't look anything like any depiction of an ogre.

dethret
03-30-2017, 07:47 PM
I do believe those are ogres since there is a troll next to them and two of them are
wearing the ogre plate armour with a skull on it, and even if they were giants, they fit
better as ogres, imo.

Anyway, heres a quick look at how it could potentially look. I am not a texture artist, but
you get the idea:

Thanks! I am using blender atm and photoshop for the texture.
