So the lvl 8 bards lull is a stringed instrument skill based song. What advantages do you get while equipping a lute over just singing it without an instrument?
Less chance for resist and critical resist. The duration stays the same.

So when lulling take off your +Cha weapons and equip lute? Is it worth losing 10 Cha to equip the lite?
Yes the lute would be more beneficial.

Vdub, what are you basing this advice on?

Depending on the lute used there is a modifier (up to 23 I think) that is added to song effectiveness. This is the same for all bard songs. It's why your DOT does more damage with your instrument, you Selos is faster, and your heal is better.

effectiveness for the lull being a bigger reduction in aggro radius, the mobs could be dry humping and you could pull 1 off the other just by adding in the basic 18 mod lute.

Bingo. The lute does not change the chance of resist or crit resist. In tough camps with lots to lull it may be helpful - I generally don't bother though.
I'd prefer it mod the resist rate or duration.
