Logged in for the first time in... ages. had graphics issues, had to rework a fresh install - but I saw that I have 8 characters, but only 2 that were over lvl1, and only one of them had gear. So I may just as well consolidate my resources and roll fresh because i'm not even sure what I was doing when I played those toons before lol.
I 'member at one point I saw some kind of pie chart kicking around here showing class representation on the server, 'member?
I'm halfway considering a female erudite paladin, but my mind isn't totally made up yet. A human druid with max str might be a fun endeavor too ;p

Erudite pally is a novelty, why not? Go for it.
Dark elf warrior/rogue? Also not many around.

Pally is one of the least played classes while still being very usefull in groups, go for it. As an erudite pally you are seriously lacking strength, you will need that to even wear your armor. So unless you have access to great twink gear i would advice you to put points into strength rather than stamina (which would be the obvious choice with twink gear).

+ erudites start with low agi so pump a few into agi.
Gnomes start with low T so go female if anything.

I rolled an erudite pally waaay back when eq released the "teams" pvp server (sullon zek I think) It was so much fun, and it was great hearing all the oooh's and ahhh's of such a unique combo

Erudite Pally is just the worst.
Even if you throw 250k worth of gear on one, they are still ugly as FUCK. AS FUCK.
Human Pally could be fun! Please not erudite..

High Elf Paladins are the noblest of the noble.
The least class the Dude plays is his warrior.

I don't think I've ever seen either a Female Warrior Gnome or Female Warrior Halfling.

It's a noble thing for a class who wears plate to choose a race that is encumbered under its weight.

I recommend dorf or erudite.
dorf cultural smithing is the best classic smithing.
Ignore the erudite haters. That starting INT is beast + Shield of the Stalwart Seas (http://wiki.project1999.com/Shield_of_the_Stalwart_Seas) Which holds up in it's own way even with velious shields.
Erudite: Add 15 to Stamina and 5 to Agility.
And get haste items. Be sure you have STR for your gear + carrying crap. Or buy potions that raise your STR. Problem solved.

Are rogues rare? Useful here in p99? Still wondering for myself

Very useful, but not very rare. They are the highest (charmed pets excluded) DPS class in the game by a solid margin.

Even with monk triple attack? I'm not disagreeing, genuinely curious.

I can't say for certain because monk triple attack + updated damage tables aren't out yet, but I think rogues are still king after that patch.

Good thing STR is easy to max out!

Intelligence does nothing for Paladins; you may be thinking of Shadow Knights. Paladins use Wisdom. Erudites are clearly the worst race for Paladins--they have low melee stats across the board coupled with unremarkable Wisdom too. That being said, race doesn't make an enormous difference in a Paladin's life, especially now that Velious has been out awhile and cheap +strength gear is available in abundance. The only real question at creation is how a player likes the look of the various races, and whether he wants access to Nature's Defender (Tunare-followers only).
