Now with no compression! We've passed a big hurdle in figuring out how to properly pack everything into S3D archives in DDS format, which is a lossless conversion process - no more quality degradation.

This is mainly a thread where I'll post A/B screenshots so people can get an idea of what the new textures will look like. I'll be getting everything screenshotted in similar fashion eventually, including all of the new weapon and held items that were done by me and Cucumbers, along with new stuff as it gets completed. To kick things off, here are before and afters for the completely redone textures that Nysus, Xevin, and Joyelle worked on - I'm not sure who did what, so feel free to post proper credit. Also, I did some work on the redone SMR texture to make it look less bad.

Did some more work on the SMR textures - fixed the lower sleeves being upside down, made the collar look a little better, and made the detailing on the lower half of the robe more consistent with the upper half:

The rest lost some detail (EX: the stuff down the middle of the DE plate)

Also, those black splotches on the dark elf plate chest aren't classic, and are actually just a bug in the Titanium client textures which the transparency patcher (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87281) fixes - I just forgot to run this on my classic textures before I took screenshots. They sort of look like a design because of the way they pattern symmetrically - here's a better classic-to-redone comparison:

I hope (even if the entire HD project is still not 100% complete ) that they release a teaser pack for the public to try out and leave feedback. I know this has been hyped for a few months now and what is currently done is no small feature. The amount of stuff that has been worked on is overwhelming!

The above screenshots look great.... BUT these graphics look even more amazing once you start to play with them in game.
Really adds another level of immersion to the game. Still has the classic vibe , just clears up the blurry lined graphics making EQ have a HD remastered feel!

It sounds like we're gonna do our first release after Sorn completes the insane task of retouching all the faces. Fortunately Sorn is some kind of Photoshop savant and can complete an entire race in a couple hours, so it might not be too long of a wait.

As for why wood elves took so much longer...well, I took breaks more often because the fine repetitive movements required are pretty physically stressful for my drawing hand. But wood elves also have a lot more hair and their eyebrows required special attention. :P

Our primary concern is what we want, not what you want. We started doing this because it makes the game look awesome for ourselves - fortunately, we're also graciously going to host and share our work with everyone else.

Then after you do that, you can go make an alternative pack that is more artistic based on your hand drawing and interpretation.

How about we do what we want instead.

The first appeals to everyone, the second only to some.

Setting out with the goal of appealing to everyone is the surest path to failure.

I do not see the improvement over the previous iteration - they still look far too high in contrast and cell shaded as if they're upscaled then softened(drawn) to hide the imperfections.

What people want(ed), was the original textures to show more clear and sharper, like as was done with some of the world geometry hi res releases.
Then after you do that, you can go make an alternative pack that is more artistic based on your hand drawing and interpretation.

I think this is a great mod, but I can see where you are coming from.

Hopefully this will be viewed as constructive criticism, as again I really enjoy and appreciate this work. A lot of the updated art is lacking in highlights and shadows (to give the illusion of depth and texture), and some of the details have been omitted or resized (changing the overall design, where is the script on the green robe?). On the faces these factors have combined to give a much more softened look, instead of the gritty hardened adventurers we are familiar with (the borders of the facial hair as an example are startlingly clean). It does make the eye patches look much better, I'll give you that!

My favourite retexture that I can see so far is the human chain, especially on the legs. I think the original design team got a little lazy on this one because it was so dark they seemed to feel okay skipping detail (either that or the original detail got lost).

I think I might have to open up the editor and cherry pick my favourite pieces to create my own set for the best of both worlds.

Redoing the hair to be realistically grizzled on certain models takes a while (and honestly it's difficult, because 256 is NOT very big), but I'll take a look when I do final edits to all the faces. (I'm reviewing all screenshots to see where I need to do more work.)

As for the faces being softened, they were originally quite soft from what I can tell. Pixelation is hell on the skin, what can I say...

It's only potentially constructive if you give examples like you did with the green robe, which is an example that's not constructive because that robe texture contains no script - that's just a cross-thatching pattern which was redone by Nysus to be much more fine-grained.

So I mean, I just flatly disagree when you say "a lot" of the updated art is lacking in highlights or shadows to give the illusion of depth and texture - that's the primary thing that all of them improve upon. As I stated in this thread's first iteration, a lot of them are different in subtle ways which is why we're making two separate packages: one which contains all of the redone-by-hand textures which were painstakingly worked on by Nysus, Xevin, Joyelle, Sorn, Cucumbers, and myself, and one which will include none of the redone character/armor textures opting for 100% upscaled-from-original textures. So the former will be the "maximum quality" package, and will contain the most differences from the originals - which is to say, it will be the package which has superior highlighting and shadowing and detail and nuance, with some very minor departures from the original stock textures as shown above. The latter will be Cucumbers' "maximum classic" package, which will be of lesser overall quality and detail, but will still be a massive improvement over the originals because the upscaling does 90% of the work.

Small correction: Cucu's package is going to use the touched-up faces that Sorn is doing, which are character textures, but they aren't really "redone" to the extent that Nysus/Xevin/Joyelle's stuff is. The main difference is a lot of the Nysus/Xevin/Joyelle stuff is completely redone from scratch, while Sorn is starting with and improving upon the upscaled textures - correcting any weirdness caused by the upscaling process.

Further, if you hardcore classicophiles want to hear something even more upsetting, Cucu's package is also going to contain all of the redone weapon and held item textures, some of which deviate quite noticeably from the originals. We have tossed around the idea of making a third "purely upscaled, nothing touched by humans" package, which would probably be pretty simple to put together.

My eyes have always interpreted this pattern as poorly resolved script. Anyone I see wearing this is going to loose about a million awesome point now I will perceive them as wearing a woven wicker loincloth instead. I suppose at least they won't be wearing the EQ EULA on the belly anymore! I'm also sad to see the 'sea gulls' I perceived on the leather belt buckles are now just crosses!

You guys have done a great job achieving clean edge highlights and shadows. That is undisputed, they create unambiguous shapes and add clarity to the armour.

Further criticism, hopefully more constructive. I didn't want to go too deep last time as to not cause offence:However, the textures you showcased are missing some of the extreme/sunburst highlights. Take a look at the human cloth textureshttp://i.imgur.com/aFte1ma.png
You can see there is an extreme highlight missing from the clavicle. This absence makes the collar bone look like it might circle up around the base of the neck like a T-shirt collar, instead of continue sideways along to the shoulders as it does in reality. This highlight creates more than clarity of detail; it creates the illusion of 3d and the illusion of a continuing shape beneath the clothes, even though we can't see it.

The leather on the human also lacks extreme highlights running down the centre of chest and the front of the legs.

Now this is what I think about when I imagine leather pants!

I love these sunburst style highlights, so am sad to see them absent. Sure maybe it isn't appropriate for a human mucking around in the dungeon of undead frogloks to have armour so brightly lit they might as well be under South Ro's sun at midsummer midday. I understand that decision. However, I personally love the appearance of heroic characters, a shining beacon against the dark and dangerous world of Norrath; The artistic style creates a narrative about the characters to me. Such highlights, away from the edges of textures, also create a depth illusion, I suppose working almost like bumpmapping.

The other creator of depth in the original textures are the shadow some of the details cast on the others. Look at the leather chest. The golden chains and leather straps fix a leather shield to the centre of the armour. The bulky chains and straps cast a large shadow on the leather beneath, giving an impression they don't lay flush to the surface of the leather and block the path of light from above. Look again at the original texture; there are lines that define the edges of detail that are much finer than the shadows of the chain/straps/shield; as such we know the shadows from the chain/straps/shield are intentionally large to convey the idea they are significantly thicker/raised than other details.

I love a lot of the extra work that has been added which the original resolution couldn't support. On the leather wrists, between the studs is a lovely line of highlight that creates the impression of the leather creasing outwards between the studs. Lovely! Lots more details like this, but if I was to offer praise on these points it wouldn't be constructive, just a massive wall of text.

I'm really happy there are different packs for different tastes too, this is a really good move.

TBH you are all doing an awesome job, I appreciate how much easier it is to sit here criticising than to actually go through the time consuming process of getting these things done!

Obviously, thank you very much for taking the time and effort to do this, they really are great and I'll likely be using them, even if there are a select few details that don't always suit my preferences.

Another note about texture highlighting and shadowing:

The original super low-resolution textures were designed for a client which didn't support a lot of fancy stuff we take for granted in the Titanium client - advanced lighting being the most important w/r/t highlighting & shadowing. The highlighting you see down the center of the human leather pieces, for example, is an artificial way of creating the illusion of depth and texture, which is something they had to compensate for in the original client because its 3D graphical features were sorely lacking. In today's client, with all of its beefy late-aughts improvements like shadows, vertex & pixel shaders and advanced lighting, the unnecessary highlighting on textures such as this doesn't really add anything and actually just makes the texture look cheesy and dated. This is probably why by the time the Titanium client was released they had ceased all support for the classic character models while they aggressively pushed the new (and horribly shitty) Luclin models in order to showcase the abilities of the updated client.

So the few updated character textures that will be in my package do indeed forego a completely to-the-pixel replication of the original classic textures, but in game and up close they look much better. The originals, even after being upscaled, look decent at a distance and begin to look shittier the closer you get - the remade textures look awesome at a distance and look even better when you get up close. My only regret about including them is that those in the OP are literally the only ones that were remade, other than Xevin's human female textures which have apparently been lost to the void. Paul I am very wary of you looking up my arm pits in game now! I don't think I've ever got so close to a player for their armour to occupy so many pixels, even when telescoping wood elf females!

Whoever is playing eq on a home cinema is going to love you for your labour of love crafting such high res textures, though. Even if robe script and seagull buckles had to take one for the team ;). Your edge highlights are incredible, especially the one at the bottom of the armpit n the leather! The weathering you did to create that leather texture is awesome too. No doubt about that!

That's an awesome shadow on the original texture, the one that separates the front of the leather from the cloth underneath.

Those are classic as fuck - they were originally released with the EverQuest Trilogy edition during this era. well, some of those world textures diviate from the original illustration a little too much for my taste is all. The character and weapon stuff done here doesnt, but thats just IMO

I think there is just too much photo real in the texture and less illustration than there should be so it doesn't capture the same feel. The character stuff itt are very much 1:1 the original texture hue/contrast/illustrative quality etc to me though.

But the world stuff so far just doesnt sit right for me what can i say.

The later model formats used by the client (from OoW+) support normal maps. It's possible to convert zones from the old format to the new format, and gain support for normal maps that way, but it's tough to get everything about zones correct (and may be seen as cheating, since you might not be able to make the zonelines 100% the same...). Weapon models would be easier, but would require the devs to change GlobalLoad.txt to put a new-format weapon model file above all the gequip# files, to allow overriding old-format weapons with new-format ones. Animated models would be a pain.

Seems that the Classic re-done items look miles better than the initial textures.
With Kunark and Velious items though, (cutlass and GJB aside) I have to look closer to see where it's been improved, but the small details are appreciated.
Can't wait to see the re-worked shields! (especially the griffon one)

All Velious armor textures have been upscaled by 100% using waifu2x. The overall difference is awesome - everything looks clearer and more detailed, and colors are more vibrant.

Can't wait to see the re-worked shields! (especially the griffon one)

Cucumbers is putting some last touches on the shields - his shields are by far my favorite redone textures so far, they look incredible. Those will probably be the last item screenshots I post.

It sounds like we're gonna do our first release after Sorn completes the insane task of retouching all the faces. Fortunately Sorn is some kind of Photoshop savant and can complete an entire race in a couple hours, so it might not be too long of a wait.

Let's do some math! Sorn started working on faces on January 3rd, and has since completed 142/207 faces. Since January 3rd, 57 days have elapsed.

142 / 57 = 2.49 faces completed per day

207 - 142 = 65 faces remaining

65 / 2.49 = 26.1 days until Sorn completes all of the faces, at which point we'll release

Yes, although that doesn't involve retexturing per se. Cucumbers fixed the erudite female and troll female Velious helm visors using Zaela's nifty Transparentifier (http://www.eqemulator.org/forums/showthread.php?t=38210) app - didn't affect the textures themselves, just the .wld file contained in the S3D which controls transparency properties. He also restored air and water elemental semi-transparency which was broken with the hi-res Trilogy textures. All will be included.

Well, in Toodles' defense, he is correct about there being no noticeable difference in quality between this thread and its previous iteration. When I attacked him for that I thought he meant like, there was no difference between the before screenshots and the after screenshots, which would be ludicrous. He was just pointing out that there's no visible difference between the compressed textures that I posted in the first thread and the uncompressed textures in this thread, which is true. There's a very subtle difference, but you'd have to load the texture in an image editor and zoom in to actually notice. All of the other stuff he said was absolutely worthy of being attacked for though.

Are people able to contribute? Like a community project or is this a closed endeavor?

Not currently, but we've had quite a bit of interest in the past few months. It's kind of a closed thing right now, but definitely send me a PM if you're legitimately interested because after we're done with this first phase and do our first release we might open the doors and bring in some new people. It's all very tentative though. It will be kind of a miracle if we get this first phase released (which we will), so it's anyone's guess as to whether we'll have any gas left in the tank to take on Phase 2, which will be like 100 times the work of Phase 1.

And as I stated earlier, I'm leaving it up to Cucumbers to make that call. Cucumbers is head honcho, I'm just the project manager.

As always everything is subject to change, so some of these might improve when we find the time for it. I believe the Sarnak Battle Shield's front side was only upscaled, meaning nothing was done by hand on that. Chitin Shell Shield, Velium Round Shield and Prismatic Shield were also only upscaled and there was no noticeable change, so I didn't post those.

Luclin textures are great, by the way - if SoE released new textures for classic item and character models with Luclin I would always use them. The only thing that was shitty about Luclin graphics were the character and some NPC models, not the textures. And the main thing that made Luclin models shitty were their animations, although some of the models were just downright shitty by themselves.

So there weren't any Luclin textures for classic item or character models - they were all designed for completely new models that were included with the expansion, and the Luclin and on item models were really fantastic. Saying it looks like Luclin item graphics to me is a huge compliment, because that's sort of the one thing they got right with Luclin. Luclin zones were pretty cool too.

But again, we're probably going to include a package that is only upscaled stuff and nothing touched by us, which will be much lower in overall quality but much truer to the original textures.

No reason to give me all those reasons, Im just saying, be careful. That shield does not look classic, where as 99% of the content you do, does. Which is what makes it unique. Not since classic did someone 'get' the art in classic eq.. finally someone else did! just be careful is all, you dont want to stray too far from the path.

Ok, I LOVE this entire project, I didn't hate Luclin, and I'm pre-disposed to disagree with mickmoranis (;)) ... but that shield scares me too. Here's why: this server is full of class-holes. With them onboard practically everyone on the server will want these textures. Who knows, maybe someday Nilbog will even build them in to the patch (one can dream).

But if you include stuff like this shield, which doesn't look like the original (the wood is much darker and the HUGE stud in the middle/large studs on the edges all became tiny studs) then you really are leaving the "classic" goal of this server and making your own thing (albeit a much cooler and better-looking thing than what Verant made).

I realize it's a fine line to walk, and honestly I'll use these textures no matter what, but for the sake of adoption I do hope you'll reconsider making that shield more classic.

You are walking that line excelently, 1 or 2 textures not exactly wierdly perfect in the strange aesthetic that is classic everquest on a shield or a boot or something is pretty good out of like 150 so far :D

No, yeah I mean criticism is welcome - it is criticism, that's fine, that's what this thread is for. It's a two-way street though. I mean, we aren't just gonna redo something because one or two people think it looks wonky - it's push and push back. You say, "this thing looks weird, maybe redo this" and I'll say, "yeah, but this and this" and we'll meet somewhere in the middle.

So yeah criticism is helpful when it's constructive, but either way I'm still going to challenge it. I actually don't think anything about the shield looks aesthetically wrong, there are just some technical inaccuracies: the center rivet should be huge, the outer rivets should be a little bigger and there should be four more, which means they need to be spaced a little closer. Other than that I think it's fine.

Lots of stuff we've redone isn't very accurate w/r/t coloring, but we spend a lot of time tunnel-watching while working on textures to see how it all fits together. Seeing them out of context in the screenshots I post lets you form a very objective opinion about the thing, but we balance that with how it actually looks on different models, next to different kinds of armor, etc., so that usually informs our decisions on what we do and don't change. Lots of stuff I've redone deviates quite a bit from the originals: whip, basic staff, crook, bow, tomahawk handle, sickle, dark two-handed sword, etc. I'm surprised some of that hasn't been criticized.

And keep in mind that even after it's released we'll still be changing stuff and posting updates and stuff. It's all very agile and subject to change - nothing's carved in stone.

Yea, I agree you are doing a good job!

The yellow shield is quite a departure though.

I perceive the yellow to be either paint or a leather covering, so there should be no exposed wood grain.

The central stud should not be a small rivet but a much larger boss occupying the whole centre of the shield.

You got the rivets on the cross perfect, but the ones on the outside ring aren't as well placed; There should be a rivet at the end of each arm of the cross and then two more rivets between each of those.

Following these points would make a much closer facsimile of the original. To be honest, I think it is amazing how 99% of the textures you do are basically perfect, requiring no feedback at all!

The only other thing you could do from there is add some gradients and targeted shading to the colours in order to exaggerate the impression of the shield being slightly convex, but really that is going beyond the call of duty.

Sadly, and obviously, I am not a digital artist so I have no idea how to bumpmap a pseudo 3d shade / highlight pattern onto a texture to create a convex appearance, nor could I do a good job at recreating the battered yellow leather look either, so obviously didn't bother.

Center rivet should be about half that size, and the outer rivets should be about twice as big as they are. Spacing on the outer rivets is correct though, I was wrong about those - there's supposed to be 12. I say keep the wood grain - could just as easily be a coat of paint as a leather covering, and in any case the wood grain makes it look better.

love this work, think of our feeback as QA (quality assurance) if we give you feedback, take that feedback and do with it what you will. I suggest using the valuable army of hard core classic nerds to its fullest. You wont find a more retched hive of scum and vill.. er.. I mean you wont find a better collection of pals and friends who truly love appreciate and understand classic eq as youll find here! :)

Also, yea it looks like its the small stud in the middle that was throwing me off (and the yellow saturation is nice!)

Just tried it, it's only for Luclin models apparently.

I would LOVE for there to be new textures, so for some of the items that by default just have the same skin as another item even though their icon depicts a different look, they could actually be made to look more like their icon. Ofcourse I have absolutely no idea how this would be done or if it's even possible, but it would be really cool.

Anything to add to the unique look of different characters (beyond just having some of the textures be covered in a transparent color) is an awesome thing for me.

No matter what though, I'm super excited about this project. Is there a download available, if so does anyone have the link? I read the OP but didn't see any link to a DL.

It is currently not available to the community until I manage to finish all the faces. Life's been pretty busy for me recently, though, so I still have a ways to go. That gives the others more time to fix weapons and things, so there's a silver lining to my slowness :)

It's math time! Sorn started working on faces on January 3rd, and has since completed 174/207 faces. Since January 3rd, 151 days have elapsed.

174 / 151 = 1.15 faces completed per day

207 - 174 = 33 faces remaining

33 / 1.15 = 28.7 days until Sorn completes all of the faces, at which point we'll release

I can see what u mean, like the upper cheek seems more relaxed, under the eyes, resulting in a little less cruel gnome stare, a little bit rounder tops of the eyes too result in that, the low pixel flat line on the left on the top of the eye

The original also has less space between the eyes and inner eyebrows, making the eyebrows look more furrowed.

Doubtful. A team of artists such as those in Verant Interactive working around the clock for a week or two would likely be more man-hours than we've spent in total. And I'm sure all of the artwork in EQ took more than a couple weeks of development.

Go back a few pages: they say they're waiting for certain sets of textures to be completed and then they plan to do a release. I don't think there's an official schedule or roadmap, but they're fairly close to a release.

TBH It's about as well done as I could've expected!
My previous interpretation of the weird-ass texture was that it was leather with a branded icon/logo, but Wood works for me!
I tended to look at that shield with de-focused eyes to see 2 legs on the bottom versus 2 hooked legs on the side.

Not really. The specifics have been kept behind closed doors because the work is so sporadic and voluminous and not actually "managed" per se. Originally "Phase 1" was just going to be upscaling all character, equipment, and spell particle textures, with some stuff redone by hand, but then we redid tons of weapons and held items by hand, hired Zaela to tinker with things providing us with animation, spell particle, and transparency fixes, and then hired Sorn to make faces prettier.

Once Sorn joined we pretty much unanimously decided that we'll release as soon as the faces are completed. So as expected we suffered quite a bit of scope creep in the beginning, but now we have a definitive release point even though we don't know exactly when that will be. Phase 2 will involve upscaling all classic zone and NPC textures, and that may or may not ever happen since it's anyone's guess as to whether we'll have any gas left in the tank after Phase 1. It will probably happen at some point, but we've barely started theorizing about how we're gonna pull that off while keeping the end texture packages to a reasonable size.

There were also quite a few hurdles along the way such as figuring out what to convert to DDS to avoid crashing the client from memory bloat, and which DDS format and conversion methods to use in order to avoid artifacts while keeping the textures to a reasonable size being that DDS files are much larger than JPEG despite being way more memory-efficient due to mipmapping. Not to mention all of the file extension wonkiness - some of the textures are DDS and some are JPEG, but they're all renamed to .bmp and flipped vertically before being repacked into the S3D archives. Makes sense, right? Meanwhile Cucumbers drew upon the powers of The Vision™ and somehow managed to permanently unfuck gequip.s3d which suffered from a litany of issues making that archive an absolute nightmare to handle. I still don't even know what he did to that thing, or what the initial cause of the problem was. I don't even want to know. It's fixed now - thanks Cucumbers!

My previous interpretation of the weird-ass texture was that it was leather with a branded icon/logo, but Wood works for me!

Oh and also, your interpretation was correct - this shield and the targ shield are supposed to be leather, as indicated by their texture names: shkiteleather.bmp, and 216ikshleath.bmp. I never interpreted them as leather, though - I always assumed they were wooden. I'm willing to wager most people thought the same.

Excellent work, as stated by everyone else. Have armor models been improved for all races as well, or are the high-resolution armor textures (specifically plate) only available for a select handful of races at the moment? My gnome warrior is in a full suit of enchanted dwarven plate, and high-resolution textures would look quite snappy for him. :)

All character and armor textures have been upscaled by 100% using waifu2x. The overall difference is awesome - everything looks clearer and more detailed, and colors are more vibrant. I've only posted screenshots of the completely redone armor/character textures which are of much higher quality than those that have only been upscaled. My package will include the redone textures as well as the upscaled textures, and Cucumbers' package will use only the upscaled character & armor textures (with the exception of robes and retouched faces). We will also probably make a package that is everything only upscaled since there seems to be a lot of people who would opt for that.

That's a good idea and theoretically feasible, but the only person capable of creating those textures is Sorn. So if Sorn gets around to it that might be a thing. It would probably still have to be a robed texture though because the robe is built into the model, but could definitely make it more monk-like and add it into the texture sets.

Update: I have finished all the iksar and am onto ogre females now. Retexture chat got real fun. "What is that on her lip? Is that green drool or another piercing? What is that stuff on her chin? WHAT IS THAT ON HER FACE?!"

They'll take a bit longer just because they have a lot of fabulous details (like scars, acne, boils, and all kinds of fun things) and the upscale wasn't too nice to them. Same for trolls.

I've been beta testing, but haven't seen a single issue so I haven't reported back.

I will say that since I mostly play casters I haven't noticed a ton of difference. However, every now and then I'll pass someone with a cool sword or shield, and the difference will be very noticeable.

Looking forward to the whole server getting to enjoy the new textures :D

To keep out the spammers the forums place certain limits on your account when it is first created. I believe those limits go away after a few weeks or a few posts (I forget which, but I'm sure if you search the forums you can find out).

will I be able to get the character and weapons, and NOT the environment updated textures? I like my enviorn textures to be the OG eq textures (which is why I love your updated ones, they look so much like the og character textures, just updated!)

Got to remember when Luclin was out, graphic cards were for more limited than they are now so they couldn't handle the higher quality textures.

I am a beta tester and they look awesome but sometimes you don't notice the updates because you aren't close enough to see them. The shields are definitely noticeable at most distances. and look awesome. Faces only when you are close but they still look awesome.

Shit, didn't mean to double post but I'm on mobile and shit happens.

This post made me LOL. I remember distinctly the Luclin patch and being prompted to enable new Luclin graphics. The updated had a tool that would take inventory of your system, and based on the system specs, tell you how many new character models you could turn on. I was allowed negative models, hahaha. I had to de-select everything and use old World graphics. I think at one point I was playing a human monk and was only able to turn on the human male graphic.

Graphic card was more than adequate before the release of SoL.

Remember that new SoL uglies characters model have more texture.

Not impressed all it did was brighten the image, which it didn't need. Makes it look less detailed, didnt seem to sharpen anything.
