Slow the mob, then tank it while dotting generally. Some like to use jbb as well. Easiest with torpor obviously given its absurd healing power.

Tip 1: Mobs don't start summoning until they reach 95-96% so you can try to kite and slow the mob if you have room and not a bellycaster. Or you can try rooting until slowed, then tank once debuffs/slow/dots are on and he ticks into summoning range...then tank. This is helpful if you can't heal through unslowed dmg.

Tip 2: Keep timer on slow. If you let it wear off, life can get bad quick.

Tip 3: Melee. Good chunk of dmg can come from melee + pet when a mob has very high resists.

If pet is attacking the mob, it will NOT summon you. Keep mob slowed and pet alive = 0 summon.

Everything else is personal play style.

Pre-Torpor, you will find pet tanking the mob is incredibly inefficient. Your pet will be 15 levels below the mob and will get ripped to pieces, even by a slowed mob.

Even with a relatively low AC in the mid 800s, you will tank the mob much better than the pet and require a lot less healing over head. You also save on roots which you will often need to keep the mob on the pet. So basically, tank it yourself, save the mana, be efficient. And, of course, it goes without saying that the idiots with papershaman gear and 700s AC will need to re-gear properly before trying it (honestly, why do some people still insist on Wis gearing?)

Ideally you want to be pushing 950AC for a low 50s mob but it's not always easy to achieve this. I personally find the DPS is higher with a decent 2h than a JBB but YMMV. Certainly on Giant sized mobs, using a PWC will give you more DPS than anything else.

I imagine it's because they aren't soloing. AC doesn't matter if you aren't getting hit.

If you're not getting hit in a group, you're not playing a Shaman right.

Many people play this game, for many different reasons. Some people are better than others. I generally slow as soon as it gets in range, but even then I'm only getting hit a couple times per mob.

Its not just for getting the earliest possible slow (and depending on the tank you might be facing 4 or 5 rounds in an XP grind), its also about root parking and off tanking.

There is nothing a Wisdom geared papershaman can do that a properly geared AC/HP Shaman cannot. But the papershaman has given up most of the flexibility of the class.

I will have to check when I get home but I think my.ac is close to 800. My wis is 193 but I have not dedicated to wis. I am lvl 48, what do you suggest for gear.

When soloing, that's true. In a group, not so much. Gear makes being a shaman easier, but it's not required. Back when corpses would poof upon dying, I played all day with little to no gear (just garbage gear from in the bank or on an alt) and never missed a beat.

I wouldn't have been able to solo the high end mobs like that, but in a group a good shaman doesn't even need gear.

What is your budget?

This is the only post worth reading. Once you out damage your pet and get aggro at 95-96% you will be summoned. This tactic above is what I use for the corrupted seafury and it works just fine. If you want to play it extra careful: send pet in and malo. Slow should always be the first or at least second thing you cast.

Get the best AC gear with added HP you can afford. A lot of it is dirt cheap, things like Tattered Mantle are less than 200pp. You also want to really try to get the 8k or so you need for an Iksar Ceremonial BP, the regen is huge. Oh and Barbed Dragonscale Boots are a must, especially when you can buy them for the same price as those awful banana boots.

I'd say buy some items to get your AC over 800 but try to limit the spend, then go do Seafuries till you can afford an Iksar Ceremonial (shouldn't take more than 5 or 6 hours. You want Ac6 Hp65 rings and Ac2 Hp35 earrings but I'd wait till you have the Ikky first.
