Are they broken? Why don't rogues use them?
Rogue poisons seem bad ass to me. Snare, slow, dd, dot. I can see using the dd and dot ones to up your dps....ya snare and slow should be covered by a group member. Why aren't people crafting and selling?

There are some rogues that use them. The ones that don't have their reasons. It's too expensive... It's not worth it... I hate tradeskilling... Stuff like that.
They aren't broken though. They do work and they're quite fun, I think. YMMV

Rogue poisons suck. They sucked on live, too, until they were revamped at the end of Luclin and changed to a proc based spell (like what they have in World of Warcraft or Rift).
The problems with poisons in classic EQ is that A) they had a chance to fail when you applied them (Apply Poison is a separate skill from Make Poison) B) you had to sit to apply them C) each poison was a ONE-TIME use, and if you wanted another one, see A and B, so D) you would apply them outside of combat, and would have a huge amount of aggro on your first hit. Ouch.
And none of that even considers how difficult it is to obtain them in the first place.
Honestly, outside of PVP, the only use for poisons on this server is the Mind Melt poison that is part of the Tainted Avalanche Ale for the Coldain ring quests.
It's kind of a badge of glory, but we don't even have trade skill trophies here. I had one on live, but it looks like it's changed since then.

they're great in pvp
once someone is in tov gear with DMF and poison flower they fall off in effectiveness but even then -- dispel/malo and BOOM someone is poison snared and focused down.

Snare poison is the kiss of death in PvP if you can get it to land. On blue, the way poison is implemented severely limits its utility.
My reason for not using poisons is simply due to the inventory it ties up. If you wanted, for instance, to be able to create 20 shots of spirit of sloth, you'd have to carry 2 stacks of creeper ivy, a stack of sealed poison vials, a stack ethereal suspension, and an empty mortar and pestle. Or carry 20 non-stacking poisons with you. I can't afford that space as a raider. That's not to say the effects aren't amazing and situationally useful. It's just easier to not deal with it.

I was able to catch newb 56-60 players with the snare for easy kills, but it stopped being worth using long ago on red. Even in kunark it was resisted quite easily by most classes, in velious its even easier, especially with a PR flower. I gave up my poisons for an extra inventory slot, 4 bags 4 slots. At one point, red poisons were amazing, 45-60 second blind duration just using blind 2 poison. was a great deterrent against any bard in an open zone that came at you trying to chant/snare and double dirge you for the kill. they wouldliterally selos off in random directions til it wore off, saved my ass a few times.
Now I just rely on a combination of sorts of either tash malo occlusion snare root tstaff/windstriker to kill people. a target locked down is a dead target. get snare on someone, even if they are near a zone line unless they are a buffed beefy warior/sk/paladin they are D E A D. with pre velious hitbox changes, not hitting people from 20 yards away anymore makes a snare or root/stun all the more valuable to killing someone as a rogue, we have enormous burst damage.
on top of that, the nerf of the easy way to level poison up(i did it the proper way first time, took way more plat then the iron sulphide method and more running around) and 2 times on the sulphide way. I would say do not even bother. If they stacked, I may carry something like contact II poisons(do around 300dmg or so) but at the same time they pull stupid amount of aggro.

You will find them in use on red. Muscle lock etc (snare) is a great thing to apply...most blue players probably don't even know what it is.
What the wiki really needs is a rogue hero that can make a good poison skillup guide.

I've posted a poison progression path so many times. I'll put it on wiki when I get off work.

Found this awful guide on wiki. Deleting for the following reasons:
Prekunark. Outdated.
It advocates farming. Poison Making has a 100% vendor bought progression.
Wordy. Too many steps. I can get you to 250 in 5 steps.
To start, put as many trainer points in as possible that should put you at 21 points, place points in apply poison as well. With this skill you should be looking for asp venom sacks which you can then use to raise your skill to 24.
From there you'll be making extract's so you'll need to collect any of the following ingredients:
* permafrost crystals, russet oxide, jack-o-lantern fungus, charcoal, iron oxide
Combine any one of these with a water flask and a empty vial up to level 36
At this point start purchasing lined vials and suspensions and take the opportunity to collect putrid bile it takes two putrid's per combine to make a putrid bane but you can do this up until 56
Your next combine is called lixt-wing dust which requires embalming dust it also takes two dusts for a combine but can be used to achieve a skill of 76 fairly easily.
Festering nettle is your next goal so collect and or purchase ashroot and make the combine until you reach a skill of 87 at the point you are trivial and need to move on.
From this point move to WK, and find a person named Gindlin Toxfodder near the Northern Karana zoneline towards the bottom of the zone, from him you'll be purchasing Lactera and constrict suspension continue making aching blood until you reach a skill of 108 and they become trivial
You'll now be using sealed vials, and at this point you need to find Gelsemium Root which is available at alchemy merchants so all you'll need to do at this point is run from WK to Halas and continue making brain freeze until a skill of 130.
Now onto making choking asmag, all you'll need to do is collect asmag weed which is in abundance around Sol A use this combine to attain a trivial skill of 151 and then you'll need to move on
Collect more sealed vials and suspension and head over to Steamfont Mountains, you'll need to locate an NPC named Ennixy Frennor and begin purchasing King's Thorn you'll be making calcium rot until a skill level of 172 when it becomes trivial at that point you'll need to move on
Now all you'll need to do is spend some time in Splitpaw Lair, and while there collect stacks of Wolves' bane which drops after every kill so it's fairly easy to accrue several stacks use a larent suspension and a sealed vial to create Monk's Hood aconite until you reach a skill of 194. While here also collect white hellbore which will be used to create visionic pain used to obtain a skill level of 204.
Now you'll have to do several combines which can be time consuming in order to make metallic alkaloid but first stuff first:
# Create lead peroxide by acquiring Tumpy Tonic and purchasing lead sulphide from Myre in Kaladim near the bank, I'd find a brewer to make you several stacks of tonic beforehand.
# Buy Cinnabar from Myre in Kaladim and combine this with Gnomish Spirits which can be found around the area, if not head back to freeport and buy more from the dock area, you'll use this combine to make quicksilver
# Combine lead sulphide with limestone which is bought from Myre to create white lead
Combine the following: Lead Peroxide, Quicksilver, White Lead with a sealed vial and larent suspension to make metallic alkaloid until you reach a skill of 215
Your next goal is Amnesic Lolium which requires Snowfall Algae and Tares Lichen the algae can be bought at alchemy shops and the lichen is dropped in Permafrost from goblins so it's easier to stay around the Halas area, continue to make this combine with a sealed vial and larent suspension until you reach 236
Make your way to Nagafen's Lair and as you kill Kobolds you should be looting death caps and black henbane which then can be used to create crippling peptide until a skill of 247
Temporal rot can now be made which can be used to achieve a skill of 258, this recipe is fairly simple just collect embalming dust and head back to the steamfont merchant buy more kings thorn and wood rose and make the combine.
While at the steamfont merchant take the opportunity to pick up some brimstone, you'll need this to make Iron Dimethyl, take the brimstone and combine it with two small pieces of ore found at Groflah's forge to create iron sulphide combine with two quicksilvers that I showed you how to make earlier to create Iron Dimethyl, repeat this until you attain a skill of 268
This would be the cap so far in P99 due to several recipes being absent until kunark, when kunark is released you'll begin again starting with spirit of sloth which is trivial at 275. Goodluck!

rogue poisons are really good, it costs about 2k to max them and maybe a couple hours hanging out in steamfont mountain. equip as much dexterity gear as you can and ask a high level shaman for buffs if you need help getting it to the cap. dex makes training poisons a lot cheaper + less carpal tunnel. any good rogue does it. what an embarassment this guy is.

Are you talking about that sub-combine exploit which was recently patched out? My progression will run you about 6k.
