SPEED METAL
A very natural evolution from traditional metal, spurred on by Motörhead in particular. Can be seen as a sort of transitional subgenre, from which thrash and power metal would spring directly and death and black metal indirectly. Difficult to find a pure speed metal band.

POWER METAL, American
When the term 'power metal' is used it mostly refers to the dominant and most widespread style that developed in Europe. There was an American power metal scene
though, quite distinct from the Euro version. Very thrashy and some bands shared the scene with thrash bands.

Where thrash metal took traditional and speed metal in a darker, more aggressive direction, power metal took it in the other direction. Very apparent in the European

BLACK METAL, First wave
The so-called first wave of black metal is more a collection of music that would end up influencing the so-called second wave of black metal or more accurately
simply black metal. Most "first wave" bands can be tied together by the fact they used Satanic lyrics/imagery and nothing more. The actual music often has a base in
speed, thrash or death metal. Chose songs based on how 'extreme' they were. Venom is incredibly important yet again.

It's partially introductory. Didn't spent much time selecting songs. Too much effort :)
Still need to go into doom metal and its derivatives and doomish metal. Folk metal, industrial and prog. Fuck groove metal.
If there are some metal fans here it could be interesting to go deeper into certain styles.
For death metal for example you can focus on technical styles, 'brutal' styles, old school styles, styles that fuse it with prog, the swedish stuff etc. Can dedicate a very long post to each single style.
Post some bands/songs if you'd like. What does yee fancy in metal?
I'd say my favourites would be traditional, thrash and black metal.

List invalid, missing Metallica. Metallica ranks around #3 of most influential metal bands ever, and certainly the top thrash metal band of history. Personal taste, they rank above the top two most influential metal bands of the widely accepted lists around.
And I wouldn't put any form of punk in resemblance of metal, may as well throw country in too. They only share roots, being from blues and then rock. Time scale may be the same as with most rock (common 4/4), but technique is completely different.

"Chose songs based on variety and somewhat lesser known bands."
That was the only reason why.
I don't agree with #3 but they are without a single shred of a doubt one of the most influential metal bands ever. And there a lot of idiots who don't realize this and even minimize their first 2 albums because of their later work. Metallica had a huge effect on metal and no thrash without them.
And I wouldn't put any form of punk in resemblance of metal, may as well throw country in too. They only share roots, being from blues and then rock. Time scale may be the same as with most rock (common 4/4), but technique is completely different.
You're very wrong here. I agree that their formation was different but there has been influence on both sides.
Motörhead is widely seen as a metal band (Lemmy always claimed them as simply 'rock and roll') but Lemmy thinks they were more alike to The Damned for example (there's an interview if you want me to fish it up). It's one of the bands that both metal and punk fans liked.
Venom was very influenced by punk.
Metallica was very influenced by punk.
Bathory was very influenced by punk.
Sludge metal is very influenced by punk.

Behemoth is a good suggestion for the black/death crossover stuff. I should add a post for that. I don't like Behemoth myself but "The Satanist" is a monster album.
WitTR is up there by the way. Feel free to add some scenes. If you're into WitTR you can post up some "Cascadian" black metal. US black metal scene deserves its own post. The Norwegian stuff is > all but the US bands have made their mark. Might get that it.
Metallica doesn't count after Cliff died
They had 2 more good records. AJFA was severely damaged by the production though. My enjoyment of the first 3 (especially KEA and RtL) > AJFA and The Black Album but they're still good.

is Castlevania Bloody Tears (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2msd-vhTBg) metal? what kind?
also how would u classify Corrosion of Conformity and Soulfly...
all these different genres really wrack my brain... good thing im at full mana loss already...
Csihar
09-30-2016, 03:09 PM
Well the Castlevania theme isn't metal of course. It's a metal version I guess. I'd call it traditional heavy metal. I usually hate the "metal cover" Youtube videos that have soulless, modern metallish sounding riffs recreating songs. This is actually quite okay.
The genres become quite easy once you know something about the evolution.
Corrosion of Conformity had different phases.
Back when Mike Dean (and the other guy whose name I don't know by heart) were the vocalist they were Crossover thrash. To make it simple: Thrash metal (think Metallica) + hardcore punk.
Starting with "Blind" they changed music (and vocalist).
That album had elements of groove metal.
To make it simple: Groove was derived from thrash metal. Focuses on groove (obviously). Think Pantera.
It also had elements of sludge metal.
To make it simple: Just listen to the b-side of Black Flag's "My War". This was highly influential on future sludge metal bands:
Black Flag's "Nothing Left Inside" + "Three Nights"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a8eyCBQ1sI
Their next album "Deliverance" started their still current sound. With Peppar on vocals. Basically stoner metal with southern rock elements.
Stoner metal ... just think psychedelic rock + metal.
A good example of stoner metal:
Sleep
Dragonaut
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-FjO3E8K-E
Does this remind you of Peppar era Corrosion of Conformity in any way?
Blue Cheer
Doctor Please (1968)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjbDzwjoQwA
Otherwise just call them heavy metal.

You're very wrong here. I agree that their formation was different but there has been influence on both sides.
No, it really is different. Any indie musician website shows this, I mean where independent musicians go to find recorded loops or even midi files to load into VST's. A punk and metal category are two separate categories. You cant say.. go to the punk category and really build a coherent metal song out of what's available.
When I say technique, I'm really being technical here. Especially where concerning guitars and drums. There is a physical technique between the two styles that sets them apart.
Like for drums, there is a different pattern between them. Metal is like a war drum how it's arranged. You have the charge of the infantry, or the gallop of the cavalry as two examples. Punk more resembles the chaotic clash of a street brawl, or hit and run tactics of a militia.
When you get to guitars, you have metal more representing the clashing of swords and as they bend/arch through the air, or the dance of a fencer. Punk you're bashing someones face with your fist, pummeling them with a brick.
Then tempo isn't really a definer, you can find fast tempo in electric blues. You can turn up tempo, or slow it down - with most any genre and it still wont change the style of the instruments with how they are physically played. But when you get down to how instruments are played, the technique used, the arrangements, you specifically define the genre through the overall style of the song.
And I'm addressing the more established classic sense of these genres, as I know with the rise of the home studio software, the many people now trying their hand at composing, many are building Frankenstein's with them trying to be noticed as different and edgy.
Influences don't mean a whole lot. You'll find a lot of metal bands influenced by classical music like from Mozart to Beethoven. A youtube search will even provide metal versions of classical scores. You see the influence in metal because of the war drum effect, where some classical music patterns on that style as well. Ahh music theory hehe.

Rock and metal can be traced back to the blues. The blues has such a large formation of scales and time it's ridiculous. Playing guitar in the beginning I played metal , now that I am older blues owns.

They share roots, some similarities, but they are different. Just like I can't set my multi-pedal to a metal/hard-rock beat and play slow blues over it, it just doesn't match. In fact I need to change the whole sound of the pedals to get something that really resembles blues sound and able to accent the blues technique while playing (my pref being acoustic simulator there, maybe with a touch of analog chorus). And all much easier to play on a slow blues drum arrangement.

If you're talking about traditional heavy metal vs punk (as in Ramones, The Damned first albums etc.) then sure.
That's where it stops. Street and crust punk bands use metal riffs. Punk drumming is everywhere in metal. Your description only fits "pure" punk and metal.
Respond to the examples I gave. Tell me that Amebix doesn't utilize both metal and punk.
Tell me Crossover thrash, metalcore, grindcore etc. don't use both styles of music.
If the categories include all metal and punk bands you can quite easily create a punk song from the metal section and vice versa.
Is this punk or metal?

Due to laziness I went to wikipedia. You mentioned drumming:
"A blast beat is a drum beat that originated in hardcore punk and grindcore, and is often associated with extreme metal and more recently black metal and thrash. It is utilised by many different styles of metal."

Electric Wizard is a combination of doom, stoner and sludge metal. Ufomammut (the album that I heard anyway) is pretty much the same.
Doom metal is sometimes used as an umbrella term and then it will include stoner and sludge as well as traditional doom metal. A shitload of Sabbath worship but Blue Cheer shouldn't be understated.
I'll make a post about a certain subgenre of doom somewhere today. Might be some stuff there that you like.

pro tip: you can't
This one's easy - that shitty strobing light around the 0:40 mark that rapidly pulses with every drumbeat or rhythm guitar note. If you think your music is heavy, you don't need to visibly pulse that shit into my brain. Let the music speak for itself.
I've seen something similar in other Youtube metal videos, where the video itself shakes with every rhythm guitar note, as if you're in an earthquake. I guess it's supposed to make the song seem 'heavier' but it has the opposite effect because of how artificial it is. Just let the damn music play.

Im going to have to agree with Daywolf here.
Metal and Punk can be very similar and often are. But that is because they are both based off the same thing. However, at least in the beginning, Punk took a very different path away from Hard Rock than Metal did.
Punk was born out of rebellion. The whole idea of Punk was to put emphasis on the message. To do so, the music was stripped down to its simplest elements and played loud and poorly. In fact, it was not considered Punk to even know how to play the instrument (from a traditional learned experience). The idea was to be as raw as possible so that the real star of the show were the words and not the music.
Metal took a different path. Metal is extremely meticulous in its musical production. Favoring complexity in the composition over the lyrical portion of the song. Metal is a showcase of talent. The overwhelming theme is to showoff how well the instruments can be played.
This is what separates Metal and Punk. They are very similar in that they both are heavily influenced by the Hard Rock era. But, they were influenced in a very different way. Punk is not Metal. In fact, most Punk Rockers in the early days would probably kick your ass for even thinking they sound like metal. They were very against the style of Metal because it was too practiced thus losing the heart of what Rock and Roll was about. Metal was the opposite of that. They chose to be the best musically and technically as their homage to Rock and Roll.

What you say here has its merits. Nonetheless, what separates metal from glam rock (i.e. Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison and other 80s wankery) is the lyrical content. If the song is about sex, drugs and the rock&roll lifestyle, it's not metal. I mean, other than the Immigrant Song, 95% of Led Zeppelin's lyrical content was sex & drugs. Black Sabbath had dark lyrics, and it made all the difference. Plus, nothing sounded raw like THIS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3b6SGoN6dA) back in 1970. It's hard to believe this is freaking 46 years old.

Don't get my wrong. By no means do I mean the lyrics of metal songs dont have merit. But, the lyrics and how they are presented are done so musically. In Punk, the lyrics are more akin to spoken word with very little thought to the overall musical composition.
War Pigs is a great example of Metal. The guitar is presented almost like a second voice in the band. This is especially true of the solo at the end of the piece. It's almost like another verse of the song with riffs and licks instead of words. This is a common occurrence in Metal of the time.

However, it's this I'm responding to:
And I wouldn't put any form of punk in resemblance of metal
Metal and punk have influenced each other musically (punk obviously had a huge non musical influence on inspiring people with their DIY attitude and lack of necessary playing skills) and there are punk bands who audibly have a metal influence and vice versa. There are fusion genres. That alone says it all.

I just know music and can speak about it. From early keyboard and guitar lessons, music theory, being in a band, playing a lot of live solo, composing music, helping a band start up, friends that started bands and helping with their set-ups, running boards, been around it for decades. All this from the 70's to today.
I haven't done any performing for years, but I usually have my les paul guitar plugged in most every evening, or one of my midi keyboards plugged into my studio software and vst's. Just bought a new pedal (another multi) and a few sets of fresh pure nickle strings last month.
I even listened to punk in the 70's (and other stuff), wasn't a fan of metal when it came around. Liked some songs though. Cowpunk has prolly been my fav over the years of punk.
And I still listen to some punk, but not regular of any new bands. More classic stuff from my old cd's like social distortion, X or ramones sort of stuff. A little more style than stripped down, not as hard, but far from metal. I study that though too, can play some Metallica, some black sabbath etc. More into playing really odd stuff though now, making/programming new sounds, sort of ambient swells, other spacy stuff sort of chill like. Other stuff, drones, blues, smooth jazz, odd time signatures, cover a lot.
As far as punk style, fusion says "aint punk rock". It's just done for commercialism. Really, people into metal didn't hang with people into punk, fights broke out. A lot of new stuff today is about $$

It does, but bands like Cattle Decapitation worked to refine their sound and got away from strictly grind. It's more the band maturing and realizing how to work within the medium, or do what Opeth did and go total prog rock, Emerson Lake and Palmer style, from Death Metal. Age does play into it no doubt.

You see this type of thinking often, especially with people who used to enjoy metal and hip-hop. It was a phase for you and you enjoyed the novelty of it. It's not a phase for others and they enjoy it for the artistic merit. That's why you no longer like it and others do. It's that simple.

DEATH/DOOM METAL
Lazy/silly name but accurate. It's a subgenre of doom metal. Although some people do, I don't consider bands like Asphyx or Autopsy to be part of this style. They have doomy passages but they're death metal bands.
The music creates the doom atmosphere but much darker. Death metal inspired vocals and drumming mostly and on more than occasion death metal riffing.
Celtic Frost is a very important influence.

Generally speaking, I call "Heavy Metal" stuff that sounds a bit like Metallica's music on Justice for All and later albums.

So you are into the "relative truth" thing, eh? No wonder your posts are so upset all the time and filled with psychological projection. Poor fellow :(
We're already in agreement for the most part, apart from modern hybrid punk, which imo is not really punk rock. Punk mostly died in the 80's, it was an underground movement for the time, not so much a commercial thing.
There are a few bands remaining, but not really with the original message, they are more focused on just life transitions with F* govts not so much there any longer. Some say sell outs, eh.. Most of the bands were baby boomers, anyway.
Metal was always 100% commercialism, gluttons of the system for the most part.

I used to listen to a lot of Scandinavian metal like In Flames, Soilwork, At the Gates, Children of Bodom, The Haunted, Opeth, etc. In Flames is radio rock now, Soilwork is still putting out good music, Opeth is prog rock now but still good. Most of the bands listed have been around since the late 80's so it's hard to not evolve your sound when you've been around that long. Most metal I listen to these days is progressive/jazz influenced stuff thats instrumental. Can't really get into the metal screaming anymore.
Plini, Sithu Aye, Chon, Widek, Jakub Zytecki, and Polyphia make some pretty good music. Oh yea and Intervals, Animals as Leaders are also sweet. Periphery is good, except their singer is terrible. If you can find the instrumental versions of their songs on youtube I'd recommend that.

Literally only 1 of those bands was around in the late 80s :D And that was Opeth before they were Opeth.
A lot of bands don't evolve at all and in a lot of cases that's a bad thing. I don't like Opeth's new output. I find it boring and lifeless. They had an earlier stab at prog rock with Damnation and that was one of their best. I don't know why I don't like their new stuff but still good that they changed because it was quite clear they were stagnating.
But anyway.... change is good regardless.
I'll check out some of the names you mentioned sometimes. Prog metal is a subgenre I sleep on.

Fluidity of genres man. Both premises, yours and I forget who had the other, are correct due to the argument for them. I got a kick out your essays because there's not really a claim of authority available in this thread.

I am going to a show this Friday for a band called "Fit For An Autopsy" in Dallas, TX. My roommate seems to have a man crush on one of them and has been pushing for me to go with him for awhile now. Never listened to the before but will give show update next Monday.

Bah whatever, needless to say they've all been around for 20+ years, Lol.
I like the new Opeth because I like true prog rock bands like Yes, ELP, King Crimson, The Flower Kings, etc. There are a couple songs on the past few albums I didn't care for though. That hadn't been the case with their metal albums, which I loved every song. I absolutely loved Opeth from My Arms, Your Hearse to Watershed.

i'm just gonna put some Deafheaven in here, because black metal with dem feels is best black metal
https://youtu.be/uC4374TkNYo?t=2m53s
also pretty good idea to keep what's good about black metal (the deeply depressive yet brutal wall of blast beat/guitars) and drop the dumb stuff, like making a cover with a black and white photo of a dead tree with the name of the band with an undecipherable font. or the ridiculous amount of make up used in black metal. seriously, some of these guys put more make up than fucking lady gaga.
i mean look at the cover of their best album:

Combines elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. In some cases there's a southern rock influence. A huge influence was the b-side of Black Flag's album My War.

STONER METAL
For some bands it's doom metal + psychedelic elements.
For others they're continuing what bands like Blue Cheer and Flower Travelin' Band started ("heavy psychedelic"). Sabbath worship is prevelant.
