View Full Version : Cant get past server select!

I have this problem 95% of the time I try to play. When I first started to play a couple months ago I had no problem getting into game and playing. I stopped because I fell back into Fallout 4 but my wife gathered interest in playing p99 with me. So I put in a exemption which was granted, while waiting the month or so for the exemption to go through I was gonna play alone to get my bearings. Well this is where I encountered my problem I cant get past server select 95% of the time, really no rhyme or reason about it I just simply cant get past the server select. Now whats even weirder is the fact that i can login just fine from my wife's pc. So something on my pc is causing a problem but intermittently because of the fact I can get into the game the same day i have the problem.

Could be a problem related to your account, not your PC - try to log into your wife's account on your PC. If it still kicks you back to server select then you can rule that out as a possibility.

Ive tried every single account I have access too. All do the same thing. Ive pinged several IPs, and one that I read was the p99 server itself, all with zero packet loss and normal latency. Ive doen 3 fresh installs, using Programs, programs x86 and a separate folder I labelled as "games", all do the same thing. I have no idea where the bottleneck is but it's getting old.
In my experience it's a traffic/load issue. On nonpeak, late/early hours, when the server pop is super low, I don't have any issues. As soon as school/work let's out, bam, no server select until midnight.

Are you connected to the same router/modem as your wife's PC? Really sounds like a connection issue - are you connecting wirelessly?
Kreigor

both are Ethernet connections I can connect to my account and my wifes account via her pc on the same router but cant connect to either on my pc i even tried switching access ports on the router and not much of a change. I also think its a connection problem, possibly a program on my pc is hogging access to the proper port.
ps
what ports are required for the process to run properly?

Yeah it's hard to say - I'd try messing around with your network configuration. Try forwarding the P99 ports (world server: 9000 zones: 7000-7150), try switching to a static IP instead of using DHCP, try using Google's public DNS address instead of obtaining one automatically if you aren't.
Could also be a bad network card at that point - integrated or otherwise. Might want to disable your ethernet connection and try a USB wireless stick or a different network card to rule that out.

possibly a program on my pc is hogging access to the proper port.
The server (remote end) uses specific ports to receive packets from the client, but the ports the client (local end) uses are ephemeral, chosen at random from (a large subsection of) all your remaining available ports. So it wouldn't be that. Unless all incoming UDP packets headed to ports around 40000 to 65535 are being blocked...

Hmm, yeah that's a good point - forwarding the server ports won't actually do anything since the client isn't using those ports to receive data. I suppose you could just open up 40000-65535 but that might be unwise. EQ really shouldn't require any port forwarding though, especially if your wife doesn't have any issues and she's on the same router. It does make me wonder though if there's a configuration file you can edit to assign your client a specific port.

Another thing to check is to make sure your firewall isn't blocking EQ for some weird reason. You could even try specifically allowing eqgame.exe through your firewall: Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall\Allowed apps

No affect!
When I get back from work today in 9-10 hours, I will play around with the router settings and play with the possibility of using wireless. Just would suck having to use the wireless dongle to play as any other application that uses my current network card has no problem.

Tried pinging the login servers from my pc i time out everytime

Okay this is even weirder... My tried pinging from my wifes pc and had the same result.. Used the routers ping utility and even the router is getting timed out from the login server... yet my wife can log in to both accounts from her pc and get into game no problem

Downloaded Speedify, used their free VPN service...P99 works flawlessly. Seems my ISP might be blocking it.

Speedify had no effect
another free vpn service when activated blocked me from even being able to login to the server select

Looks like someone else had the exact same problem here: https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87915
I'm reading that some people were able to fix the problem by changing their shortcut target path to "C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c start /affinity 1 C:\EverQuest\eqgame.exe patchme" - I would try this if you're running a multi-core system. Others have had success using WinEQ.

The dreaded 1017 bug - so many possible causes. According to this thread (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161971) computers with a clock speed over 4 GHz frequently have this problem, which can be resolved by underclocking your processor.
You also might want to try completely disabling your firewall and antivirus if you're running anything beyond MSE/Windows Defender.
I am convinced it's something to do with your computer specifically though, since your other machine is connecting fine.

Good old EQ - the only game you can play in 2016 that might require you to downgrade your PC.
Kreigor
09-25-2016, 12:40 PM
wow!... that did it
had to drop my clock speeds down to stock 3.2ghz .... im at the character select currently
thanks paulgiamatti for the suggestion
im gonna fiddle and find a sweet spot so i dont have to drop my clock speeds that far as loading my desktop took forever
ill report back with what settings are the tipping point for it
Kreigor
09-25-2016, 01:30 PM
so 4.2 seems to be the sweet spot
i still retain a 1ghz OC with minimal performance loss and can now get into the game no problem
so 4.2 and below is acceptable by the p99 server and 4.3 and up is unacceptable
it may just be that the 4.5ghz oc i was running wasnt stable enough on the clock speeds and the server may have been reading the fluctuating delta as a speed hack and not letting me join but i can now play so i suggest everyone who is having this problem go back to stock if that fixes the problem just slowly back down from your overclock till you hit your sweet spot
now i have to figure out if ill need to go back to 4.5 anytime i want to play more modern games such as fall out 4
