UC or CSU

University of California VS California State schools.

I myself see the benefits of both , but I'm pro UC

I went to both.

My feeling is that the CSU set me up better in terms of practical knowledge and was less expensive than the UC. I, however, knew I would be going into industry directly after my BS and getting a MS later down the road rather than jumping straight into grad school after undergrad. If someone wants to get into academia or pure research however, UC is the way to go.

Yeah, It's a tough choice for me based on whether or not I want to go after a graduates degree right away. I don't see it being a practical option at my age. Then again, I already have acquired work skills in one of my chosen majors.

I just see myself wishing I had gone to UC instead of the state school later on in life.

I went to a UC (Irvine).

CSU's are a better deal for probably 2/3 of students. However, at a UC, the ceiling is higher, and there are more resources and opportunities for those who are resourceful enough to utilize them. I got an incredible education and that's with me being an unmotivated slacker who wasted much of what I was offered. A CSU would have been a better choice for me at the time because I was too immature.

The best course of action though if money is an issue (it wasn't for me) is to find a good CC and do your general ed there and transfer. I took some grad school prereqs at my local CC and the quality of instruction in my core sciences was better than I received at the UC pretty much just by virtue of the access we had to the (highly qualified) professors. 300 people shoved into a lecture hall with grad students running the labs vs. 30 students and 1 professor who also does the labs and knows every student quite well. Letters of rec were a breeze.

At times I still wish I would have applied/graduated from Cal Poly but I'm far enough along that that feeling is fading fast. You just need to remind yourself that school is just a stepping stone into a career and after a few years of establishing yourself professionally, the usefulness of school and the name brand get left by the road (with some exceptions).

In my opinion, if you can easily bankroll it and you're in a good spot for getting a job after graduation (re:internships) then go for the UC. Otherwise, pick one of the better ranked CSUs for whatever your career path is. Unless it's Riverside cause fuck that place.

Money isn't too big of an issue. I sold my house so I could pay for school outright. I don't plan to work at all during my two years at a state or UC. The question being is if I want to go do a masters program after or go back to work.

I'm not sure if I want a 6-year gap in my employment history. I think If I go back to work for a year than perhaps pursue my masters It'll be better. Course I'll have to get opinions from many scholars and colleagues before I make that choice.

Just taking it one step at a time, and I'm interested in peoples opinion about the two different school structures.

Either way, I'm looking at staying local in San Diego. I got Riverside area schools to choose from along with UC Irving, UCSD etc.

Yep I am in CC currently. I got about 3 semesters left before I transfer.

Right now I'm leaning towards Business Admin or Engineering.

Yeah UC Irvine is a nice school , other that Ant Eater reference =P

When I visited there to see friends and bang chicks back in the day, it appeared to be dominated by Asians.

It most definitely is and was, but that's typical of UC's. And I never saw it as a bad thing.

do you know how much you will actually invest yourself into academia? if u gonna go hard, i'd go to a UC, otherwise CSU

Exactly, I think I missed the boat on this when I was 18. Now that I'm 28, the years after, I take into account heavily. Add that with having full custody of an eight-year-old, I don't see myself just doing school for the next billion years. I wish I could though =)

Overall, I see myself attaining my BS Degree and pursuing a masters slowly for the first year- while working. Then maybe, eventually stop working again and going full fledged into my masters.

As much I would like to just keep going to school, I'm a bit worried about having such a large gap in my employment history. Right now I got 10 years of work experience admin, management, and sales. My current position is an Account Executive with an international Sign company that specializes in Architectural designs.

I don't feasibly see myself making more than I do now even with a BS or Masters, but I want the education for own self-interest , as well as other options.

Right now I make 80 - 95k a year. As my job does have profit sharing and commission incentives. My base annual rate is 70k a year, which isn't too shabby for only a high school diploma.

The problem is, my choice of major preferred is Engineering , but getting an undergrad in Engineering won't yield me any work , as the work experience i have is more towards business admin , which is my second choice of major.

So between choosing my major and school, that leaves me figuring everything out as I go. So far this is my analysis.

I dropped out this year from a private school in norcal. You may want to consider doing the same thing. It makes it easier to focus on EQ full time.

If you want to do engineering, and can actually get accepted to the program you want, UCSD seems like the obvious choice.

I wish I went to CSU because they have the "block" system. Block systems let you just focus on one subject at a time, rather than taking 4 different classes they may or may not have anything to do with each other. This is a much better way to do college IMO.

But if you don't care about good grades, block systems I guess could be more "boring." Its pretty hard not to get a C in a class these days unless you don't do your work. But those As are still a minority (except in schools like Harvard and Yale, which are there to preserve privilege for the rich).

All the pot and hypsters are annoying however.

Edit: I don't like being around pot when I'm in school because I like it too much. It will really fuck up your grades and future if you let it.

I also realize that getting a "C" in upper science courses isn't always easy.
