Decided to look it up, eh? :/
I have a different answer. i haven't looked at FB :p

96 is the answer if you look at it as an incomplete set, which most will since it appears to skip numbers. If it is viewed as a complete set then 40 is the answer.

Daywolf

The prob is, two different solutions is not a correct answer. One is right, the other not, at least among the two. I haven't looked at FB, but I hear the debate is some 3m posts long :D
But I have a theory, I'm thinking on it.

There is nothing to indicate it's an incomplete set. I would argue that's an assumption!

(x*y)+x

its about as hard as a no mans sky puzzle lol

The other pattern is

a + b = c

x + y = x + y + c

40 would have been my first guess at a glance, but assuming the answer is contained within each equation and that we're not to involve previous answers, 96 seems right.

maskedmelon

Could also be 61 =p if we assuming the second set is expressed in decreasing base starting with 6

Daywolf
08-30-2016, 12:08 PM
It is incomplete, it's missing 0

maskedmelon

Explanation:

5 = 5 in base 6
7 = 12 in base 5
9 = 21 in base 4
19 = 61 in base 3

maskedmelon

Or I guess -10,001 if we want to assume numbers are skipped and maintain congruence ^^

maskedmelon

Oh wait no, that's wrong, it'd be -1,000,000,000,000,000,000 last answer was negative binary lol, one too far.

Personally like this one.

9 = 21 in base 4

Oh my gosh, I'm retarded lol. No, 19 in base 3 is 201. Wow, yeah, still think negative one-Quintilian is right though.

Actually, the answer is *tortured contrarian bullshit* No, it's Black Bat Licorice, foo

Aww shit, that neg one quintillion is still wrong :/ I'm minding my own business typing and realize base -1 would only have ones :/

-1,111,111,111,111,111,111

That why you laughed at me Day?

Whatever ^^ I knew the solution was 19 in base -1! Never been good at application, too many errors! As evident in this thread lol.

Dont blow your brains out on this one Melon, keep it simple =)

Just add the previous solution to [X + Y] to get the new solution

1 + 4 = 5
5 + 7 = 12
12 + 9 = 21
21 + 19 = 40

Who can figure out what comes before [1 + 4 = 5] ???!!???!??

You guys have been breaking the assumption that + means addition and fiddling with changing the base. I'll break the assumption that = means equals. Instead, = means less than or equal to.

1+4=5
2+5=12
3+6=21
8+11=9999

Done. Try to prove me wrong :)

maskedmelon

Damnit, here. I can't fucking count:

-3+0=-3
-2+1=-1
-1+2=1
0+3=3
1+4=5
2+5=12
3+6=21
4+7=102
5+8=1,101
6+9=111,111,111,111,111
7+10=-11,111,111,111,111,111
8+11=-10,011

Or

8+11=201 if you assume there are no numbers missing between

Not sure if you can have a negative counting system though so the first solution may not be valid :/

96. Took me about 5 seconds. But I do have an IQ of 140. Or I had. Then the meth happened.

That had me thinking. If you're looking at it from a set, the answer is 96.

1 + 4 = 5
2 + 5 = 12 [7 was added]
3 + 6 = 21 [9 was added]

so then

[not listed:]

4 + 7 = 32 [11 was added]
5 + 8 = 45 [13 was added]
6 + 9 = 60 [15 was added]
7 + 10 = 77 [17 was added]

8 + 11 = 96 [19 was added]

(I completely fucked up the math at first)

I like 40 better than 96, fits my pattern recognition better than stupid math

-10,011 conforms to the math and pattern

201 does too, but ignores he leap in the numbers on the left lunar side of the equation (would be like 40, but with math that works)
