Hey everyone,
So I've been playing around on p99 for a week or so now and I'm really enjoying myself. I've tried a couple of classes, and noticed a trend. I don't know where to get any low level gear.
Sometimes I've gotten lucky with drops off skeletons or orcs etc, but when I search the wiki for information about gear I've had a hard time finding any information about low level gearing. Pre 30 I get the impression I sort of just roll with what I find.
I'm making this post because I was reading through the Ravager's 1k Twink guide and noticed a line down at the bottom for the cheapo/misc items "Shiny Silk Gloves (5hp) Never see these for sale, but they drop off a level 10 spider in LFay"
I immediately wanted to go hunting for that mob to try and loot it myself. Can anyone point me in the direction of a possible list/resource for finding low level gear drops that aren't to valuable but huntable. I think moving around Norath in search of loot early on would be really fun for me, instead of just trying to get to around 30+ save plat and buy gear.
Thanks for any responses!

As someone who started 40 days ago and has amassed a nice amount of gear and wealth, I would say just level up and buy what you need. It's the unfortunate design of EQ that you can't really go and get your own decent low level gear most of the time, with a few small exceptions perhaps. Check out this guide on the wiki, it is pretty helpful in listing places you can make decent plat while leveling up:

Ah, that's to bad. Was hoping for a list just like that but for self found adventures!
I'll make good use of it though, thanks for sending me the link. Killing guards at level 16 to sell there swords sounds fun!

Turning in the belts/pads from Crushbone gets you a bunch of rawhide armor. You can also sell them and buy banded, etc.

I really disagree, EQ doesn't have an unfortunate design. You don't need tons of super awesome gear at low level, you can actually get far just with some basic gear.
Non gear dependent play is what makes EQ totally unique.

This. I regularly play my enchanter and druid (both of which are naked and in their 20's). Back when we had that bug where your corpse instantly despawned, I lost my 60 shaman's gear (temporarily) and never missed a beat. Good gear makes things easier, yes...but it's not required for normal play. You just have to know what you're capable of doing with the gear you have(or lack thereof.)

Totally agree, there is a lot of good 'antitwink' code in EQ, hidden DMG and AC caps, stats being far less useful at low level. Admittedly kunark went a long way around some of these by adding silly things like a tunic with huge regen, and lots of high DMG low delay weapons.
OP if you want to look for some of your own gear, then around level 3+ Qeynos Aqueducts is pretty fun. Loads of different camps, a few AC items better than cloth and even hp items for your ear/finger ring slots!
Once you outgrow aqueducts you can move on to black burrow where a few +str items drop, which will help you carry more loot.
Unfortunately the Qeynos area is a little unpopulated, but a lot of Raw Hide armour drops in crushbone in the Faydwer (elves and shorties). There are various quests for leather armour (loot the Taskmaster's brass earing and give it to slaves), 'banded orc vests' and so on in the area. You may even pick up a shiny bronze shield and some bracers of battle if you are lucky!
If you start in qeynos and transition to crushbone, make sure to check out the bloodforge hammer quest. It's a nice little boost to resists if you play a cleric or druid. It also gives you a magic weapon for hitting on willowisps (a great way to make money from about level 10).
If you want to level up and buy gear the only thing that you will really 'need' that won't drop for you is a decent melee weapon (about 11/25 for 50pp is possible, such as the green jade broadsword). Platinum fire rings (55hp 5AC) are also nice, get a pair once you have saved 500pp. Once you are 20 you will have outgrown leather armour and a nice purchase is a full set of banded, which will tide you over until you can fill out with something a little more exotic. If you are a plate class you can pick up bronze armour in Mistmoore, Unrest (small and medium) and Najena (large). Blackened Alloy is good for plate and chain classes, dropping in Runnyeye (try to avoid blackened iron, the ac is worse than banded and it is a lot heavier).

A quick start Melee/Knight/Shaman Guide:
1. Work Tailoring to make Patchwork Leather Armor and sharpen rusty weapons (blacksmithing) to get yourself a nice tarnished weapon to fight with. Level to 9 or 10. If you like blacksmithing, work on making Metal bits and then studs, to create studded leather armor.
2. Go buy a Magic Weapon.
3. Spend lv10-15 killing wisps for Lightstones and Greater Lightstones and get coins per kill.
4. As you amass money, go to EC Tunnel and buy yourself full banded and two AC5 HP+55 rings.

What class are you playing?
Shiny Silk Gloves drop from http://wiki.project1999.com/Queen_Nasheeji, spawn loc at 750, 2426. Her PH is a spiderling (yellow colored, so easy to spot). I might be wrong on the level, last time I killed her it was tougher than I remembered for non-twinks, might be level 12. I think the spiderling and the named are the same level. 6m40s timer.
A fun, but dangerous camp for low levels is Squallslither in Dagnor's Cauldron. He's a named snake that drops http://wiki.project1999.com/Serpentskin_Eyepatch and Serpent Blood Potion. The potion is an instant click "Desperate Hope" 200hp heal, 320hp Rune, which is nice for those "oh shit" moments, since you don't need to target yourself to use it. He's easy to farm as his PH is a stationary sandbar serpent in the northeast side of the lake, where the lake meets the land. You can see the tail sticking out of the wall. It's a 2 minute spawn timer. He's tricky at low levels, because skeletons and high level goblins sometimes path by.
http://wiki.project1999.com/Beartooth_Necklace is easy enough to get, Marik Clubthorn wanders South Karana, no faction hits, level 16 warrior. Just level around the Aviaks and you'll eventually see him.
http://wiki.project1999.com/Crookstinger is a nice weapon that procs a 6 damage dd and 6 damage dot that most classes can use. The mob of the same name that drops it is a level 8 bee. There's a couple of spawn points, but they got changed around a few patches back, the one that I have confirmed to still be working is 729, -399. Place holder is lower level bees, many path by the spot, so you just gotta kill them until you see it spawn on the spot. 6m40s timer.
If you're a wis caster, http://wiki.project1999.com/Testament_of_Vanear can be done at 14, which will take a long time to upgrade.
I've got a lot more, maybe when I get around to it I'll compile a more comprehensive list. It is definitely possible to gear any class as you level in this game (even melee, though you'll either group more, or really get to know mob levels and their max hits). I do it with my alts, because it's just more fun. The hard part is turning down gear from well meaning people who see you running around in raw silk or leather. You definitely gear up a lot slower, you're not going to see any of the really good stuff until 50+, but that just makes it that much more rewarding when you get it. Let me know what class you're playing and I can give you ideas on where to level and what can be had without spending any plat.

Iksar berserker club (drops in Kurn's tower) is nice as far as untwinked weapons go. Obtainable maybe level 17ish.

The problem with farming these super low level items from a practical standpoint is that in the same time you could have made enough plat from bone chips and spider silks to buy a weapon that drops in Seb and will last you till your 50s.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. Sure, you can go that route, but you're going to miss 80% of the game's content in the process. Plus you pick up a few nifty things along the way, did you know there's a 200 range 3 charge instant aggro clicky in Erud's Crossing that costs 6p per buy back to recharge?
Not to mention, you get the satisfaction of a weapon upgrade dozens of times every time you come across one incrementally better, rather than 2 or 3 times for the life of your character, and your old gear gets handed down to your alt army, so you're not wasting your life haggling in EC to give your alts a head start.

Exactly! Buying something to last into my 50s and grinding up in the best xp zones just isn't what I'm playing for. Thank you for all the info on some of this low level gear I've got my work cut out for me!
I'm playing a Euridite Necromancer named Nimrots. I'm level 6, currently have been leveling in the warrens. I will start venturing off around level 12 so I can bind myself.
I'm definitely going to check out those Aviaks while searching for the Bearthooth Necklace.

I might try heading to Lfay now if I can grab a port, Paineel has been pretty empty though so chances of that are slim.
Get home from work today around prime time though so who knows, might be some dead spiders and bees in my future!
Low level gear drops aren't well-explored on p99, but there are quite a number of them!
http://wiki.project1999.com/Bone_Fingered_Gloves drop from a warbone monk in LS.
http://wiki.project1999.com/Basilisk_Bracer drops from Deep Lava Basilisk (sorry, not sure on level for this one) in LS as well.
Should be a lower level undead knight in Qeynos Aqueducts that drops http://wiki.project1999.com/Limestone_Ring
Also in the aqueducts is an injured rat who drops http://wiki.project1999.com/Alligator_Tooth_Earring
http://wiki.project1999.com/Shiny_Brass_Shield is a hot commodity...or it was on live, anyway. Orc trainer camp in CB. Bracers of Battle (to wear or to get Prayer Cloth of Tunare) and Dwarven Ringmail Tunic (to wear or to get Screaming Mace) are also things you can get in CB.
Watch out for the brownie scouts in lfay :)

There are some cool low level armor quests you can do but they largely depend on your starting area and class. For instance, the curscale armor quest in Cabilis is great for starting monks and the turn-ins give substantial XP for the level. I even did them on my Iksar Necro just for the XP even though I couldn't wear the armor. You may have out-leveled the gear for these typs of quests but good to know for alts.
There are other turn-in type quest armor (and other quests armor later like you can get in other starting areas but I don't think there is one for every class in every starting area). You can check the class page on the wiki in the quest section I think.
Some other examples for say enchanter:
Incandescent Armor Quests
Mystic Cloak (all pure casters) - fun quest
All of these can be found in the class specific quests section of the p99 wiki for your class and also in the pre-planar gearing section of each class.

TIL a few random named in newbie zones that drop vendor trash are 80% of content in EQ. :p (Teasing)
But seriously, It's fun for sure, that's why I said "from a practical standpoint" in my post. I'm super casual and I've been playing since year 1 so I spend almost all my time in random zones exploring.

Qeynos area by far has the highest amount of quests, my guess is because it was the first area created back in the day. There are even several quests that have a good AND evil option to complete them.

Warrens is fun, there's some gear in there too. Scepter of the Forlorn is pretty neat, though will be a while before you can kill the King. Necros get some good quests in Temple of Sol Ro too.
I don't know if you got the Alligator Tooth Earrings or Limestone Rings yet from Qeynos Catacombs, but that's an extra 20hp combined that you can get at your level right now. Just be careful getting there as necros are not much liked in most places.
As a necro, you'll definitely want to look at stacking HP more than anything else, so don't feel ashamed to farm some plat and buy crafted hp jewelry (rings and bracelets) as you really can't do better until much later in the game from drops. Luckily, necros aren't as gear dependent as other classes, so aside from hp rings, save plat for spells and eventually you want to buy a Circlet of Shadow, because it no longer drops and is far superior to Circlet of Shadows.
http://wiki.project1999.com/Shralok_Pack can be farmed at 12. Light bags with weight reduction are indispensable for casters. Spawns in Kithicor, If you enter Kith from WC, follow the zoneline south to the corner then go west along the wall, there's a stationary giant spider just passed the lake that is the ph. 6m40s timer. Don't worry about undead, nothing paths over there.
If you want to make your eyes bleed, you can spend a lifetime in Qeynos Hills trying to get http://wiki.project1999.com/Pyzjn to drop a Glowing Black Stone. Doable at 16, though very frustrating.
Gnoll Embalmer, a level 16 necromancer in Lake Rathe drops http://wiki.project1999.com/Skull_of_Jhen%60Tra which might be tricky, but an adventure to get before 20.
Raw Silk is easy enough to tailor for filling out slots, though you'll have to travel to the Karanas or Everfrost to find spiders that drop spider silks. There's a couple of spiders in Qeynos Catacombs, but not many and they rarely drop silk.
For a necro, that's all I can think of until 20+ in which case you'll want to either solo or group in dungeons to get upgrades and do the sol ro quests. Kerra Isle, Solusek's Eye, Upper Guk, Mistmoore, Najena and Unrest all have necro usable loot that's attainable in that range either solo or grouping. Don't forget to keep all of the words you find if you want to experience the joys of research.

Thanks again for all of the great info. I remade as a human wizard in Qeynos and joined up with the new guild <Ways of Yore>.
They're dedicated to self found play so it works perfectly for me!
Anyone that posted here if at all interested in this style of play I'm sure would be welcome in the guild, check them out.
Thanks again,
