View Full Version : Windows 10 Update made EQ unplayable.

So, as the title states I was running windows10 for months without any issues at all. In fact, EQ worked very well until an update installed on 8/3/2016. This update completely fucked up my ability to play eq. As soon as I load in, it feels as if I am playing back in 1999. Its completely choppy and basically unplayable in any setting where I am not the only person in a given area.

Should I just reboot computer to a fresh windows install, figure out a way to disable this automatic update, and then re-install EQ? I can't really figure out any other ways to fix it.

I tried uninstalling the most recent (and only update since I got this computer) and it did nothing to help. It frustrates me to no end that I went AFK for 3 hours and come home to find that I can't play EQ anymore.

Any help/advice would be appreciated; if I cant figure out a way to fix this by sunday I'm going to just wipe it clean.

You bell end mate. First thing i did when Windows 10 came out :

-Control panel
-All Control panel items
-Windows Update
-Change setting
-Then check the "fuck off Bill Gates" box.

If you havent got a way to system restore pre-install then id wipe it clean (download EQ and whatever else you want to a stick first) . Im sure theres a faster fix but id just want to get rid of Windows 10.
The last AVG patch also screwed up EQ - i have to disable anti-virus for the first minute just so i can run the EQ exe then its ok to turn back on.

Yeah, I'm fine as long as there isn't like more than 2-3 people in the area. Once I enter a populated/active area, the game becomes literally unplayable. I think if I can't figure out a fix by sunday I will just start with a fresh windows install, disable windows update, and then install EQ.

Other than that, I'm stumped at the moment.

Do you have logging enabled? This used to happen to me due to corrupt log files, drove me insane until I finally figured it out. It was trying to write to a corrupt file every time there was a new line of text in game and it would cause gameplay to lag and stutter like crazy. After I cleaned out my log folder by moving all of my log files to a different folder for archival purposes, it created new logs when I logged back in and it was fixed.

Relevant: a Windows 7 upgrade as of 3-4 months ago caused serious system instability (instant shutdowns).

I will never keep updates turned on ever again. I'm done with Microsoft, they broke my trust too many times in 2016. I didn't know what the fuck happened and troubleshooted it for hours before I realized that yep, Microsoft fucked me over. Upon rollback and system restore, I instantly shut down updates permanently to see if that would fix the problem and blocked the upgrade they were trying to give me. That fixed it.

Advice: keep updates shut down, its just not worth it unless its something like a "service pack" or something.

There are no "service packs" anymore. The 8/3 update was basically the closest you will get to one with windows 10 though. Sucks you got 1 bad update and now shun off updates. Windows 7 ran great for me for like 5 years, Windows 8.1 ran great for me for over a year and Windows 10 has been going strong for 2 months now. There are always precautions you can make and things to change that will make your experience better and easier. Sometimes it takes a little work on your part though.

Yeah, I've had this issue as well. It's something else though.

I'm going to give that a go when I get home from work later on, if that doesn't fix anything I'll be starting fresh and never downloading an update from windows again.

I actually checked to see if there is a way to turn off auto update and couldn't find any way to do so. Some googling has turned up that basically the only way to keep it from updating is to set all of your normal connections as metered and turn off updates for metered connections.

I just did windows 10 update. I did the clean version wiped everything. I downloaded every driver obviously. My computer was really messed up and my memory was cut in half. I contacted Asus tech support. They told me to pull everything out of my computer and plug in back in. I did that and it fixed everything. I would recommend starting by pulling out your gpu and memory and installing again. They also recommended doing latest bios update. I did that as well. My computer is now running perfect with windows 10.

You can't technically turn it off, but you can make it so that it wont update by making sure you select the setting to not do updates on metered connections. Then you have to set all of your regular networks/wifi connections as metered.

It was running perfectly for me until 8/3 update. From what I've gathered by googling there are a bunch of folks having the same issue as me. I've read basically that there is an Xbox App that gets installed/updated with this update which is causing the issue.

I'm about to try getting rid of that and see if it helps, if not I might try your suggestion Bwils.

Edit: So, I've come across a suggestion for a fix for this issue which I'm somewhat nervous to attempt. It involves messing with the registry to disable the DVR feature of this Xbox App. Apparently, if you manually turn it off in the app or disable it in the registry it reverts back upon restarting.

I just need a tech savvy person to try and decipher this reddit thread for me: https://www.reddit.com/r/GlobalOffensive/comments/4vwiu8/how_fix_csgo_fps_and_tweak_windows_cfgs_after/d62clmb

I understand they're talking about CS there and not EQ, but its the exact same issue that I'm having and it also stems from the same update.

Welp, couldn't figure it out and raid windows are looming soo I wiped it clean. Going to re-install EQ later and see if a fresh windows/EQ install fix the issue. If not, I'm utterly knackered.

Per your link, it appears to be related to some Xbox app which comes with Windows 10.

a quick search shows the "proper" way to disable that feature they are discussing, if you havent already uninstalled the xbox app:

Disable "Game DVR" in the Xbox app
Open Xbox app > go to config > Game DVR > Disable

if you cant find that then you can always do it the manual way via editing the registry. (by adding or editing the value that their program is using to control that setting).

run regedit.exe as admin, and then navigate this path just like a folder:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore

then on the GameConfigStore folder, right click add DWORD, call it GameDVR_Enabled

GameDVR_Enabled DWORD
0 = Off 1 = On

(set it to off)

check your video drivers?

I would say this as well if you have a dedicated GPU. If its integrated that should be updated with windows but usually choppiness would indicate possible out of date graphics driver.

OP sounds like your computer is using the onboard video and not your dedicated card.

Open Xbox app > go to config > Game DVR > Disable

A couple of months ago this fixed my problem.

A Win 10 update ran on my PC this morning and now I get "You can not attach a debugger while playing project 1999."

Double checked and Xbox software not installed.

This is annoying. I wish the P99 error message was more helpful.

Turn off logging and see if it's resolved.

I had issues with built in antivirus in win10. Excluded the logs folder in eq from scans and done.

if you have logging on and someone or an npc casts the spell center it will lag you because it takes the <center> text as a formatting command and tries to format your log file. this can be a huge pain in the ass in zones with cleric guilds like felwithe. turn logging off to resolve this issue

No idea what he's talking about. The log is a .txt file and formatting flags would do nothing to it. I have log on all the time and no issues here.

whaaaat? lol .... got proof?

its a fairly well known issue on live. you can make a lvl 1 high elf on a live server and see for yourself, altho the freezes might not be too bad until your log file gets to be decent size. you can also type <center> in chat and cause the freezing as well. since it seems to be a windows issue and not a client issue, i would imagine p99 would behave similarly.

This is the winning answer......

Want to know why? It's because <center> is an HTML command and it's trying to edit your log file document. If you have a large log file, it will lag.

Try type any of these in your chat box, for example use /say

/say <center>
/say <p>
/say <br>
/say &nbsp:
/say <h1>

This will lag out anyone nearby who has their log on. So yeah.

<center> seems really bad, because it tries to center all text that goes into your log file for the next 10 seconds or so. Try this:

/say <center> and then spam H (hail). Fun times.

Grimjaw

Ok... That's pretty messed up, however pretty sure that issue doesn't occur here on p1999 servers. You never even see Center with those tags around it in p1999. Not sure what client messed that up but it looks like a pretty recent bug on live, so not titanium.

I see other bugs with those tags but not that one.... On p99 those brackets cause word-wrap to hide characters. (As seen in /who lists. And PVP yellow-text)

is there another fix to framerate aside from disabling the xbox crap? after the anniversary update things get incredibly choppy in EC tunnel

biggest problem I have with Windows 10?

inability to turn updates off.

you can lose system stability at any time. I have kept my Windows 7 updates off since about 4-5 months ago when they caused immediate shutdowns of my PC at random.

Never had a problem since.

you can disable win10 updates easily if you have the pro version. just need to hit up the group policy editor and disable it there.

Easy to disable updates in the home version as well:

As for framerate issues, I would update your video card drivers and verify that your graphics card is working.

framerate issues fixed, for me at least, from a post in the bug forum:

I moved to windows 10 recently and had frame rate issues with my new computer also. What fixed it for me was letting the game make a new eqclient.ini file by renaming the old one and starting the game. I just set the screen resolution and redid my settings with no issues.

not sure what wizardry that is but letting the game make a new eqclient.ini worked

Tasslehofp99
11-17-2016, 08:40 PM
Yep, after a fresh install of EQ I still had the framerate issues as well. The only fix I could find was to delete the eqclient.ini file as well. It was annoying to have to redo all of my UI/Hotkey stuff but that lag was terrible so well worth it.

paulgiamatti
11-18-2016, 02:32 AM
Probably a corruption issue - the same thing can happen to log files. Probably something to do with the fact that the client is an old piece of software which was originally written for Windows 98, and therefore susceptible to corrupting files that it writes to in modern file systems. With corrupt log files, it will still write to the file but it will cause the client to hiccup with each new successful write, creating the illusion of lowered framerate - theoretically it's not really a framerate issue, but it presents as one.

I've never had a corrupt eqclient.ini, but what I'd do is just create a new file, copy and paste the text from the old corrupt file into the new file, and then save that as eqclient.ini so that I keep all my client settings.

This worked for me as well except if I even open the eqclient.ini without making any changes or anything it will lag again, so I can't copy paste from my old file, also I can't seem to plug anymore when I zone

There must be another way, anyone? On a good laptop with Windows 10 and great GeForce gtx 965m graphic card. I read something about the new Windows 10 update made it very choppy for other people as well

Windows 10 is great but the forced upgrades are ridiculous. As far as I can tell there is no known way to permanently disable the updates (http://net-informations.com/q/mis/disable.html). If you disable the update service, there are scheduled tasks that run regularly to re-enable them. If you cancel the scheduled tasks, as soon as you reboot your computer they get added back. The possible solution is that there should be a registry key you can set to alert you that windows 10 updates are available instead of automatically installing them.
