I was telling my son, who plays with me now, about the My crazy love for EQ and the things I'd do to play it. I'd wait for my parents to go to bed and I'd go downstairs and put the computer monitor under the computer desk and put a blanket over the desk. I'd play for hours because the light wouldn't wake my parents up. It's funny because that is how I learned to type!!! I love EQ! So many good memories. Anyone have something that is funny that you did because of EQ?

Another story: my brother and I were really close and we played Everquest together on Tunare server in "order of concord" guild. My parents decided to move to Utah and my brother stayed in Illinois. In order to find time to play with him, I'd run home as fast as I could for my 45 minute school lunch break. He was a Druid so he would constantly be kiting things so id randomly just pop up and start hitting them as a monk. It was our time to connect! Good times

I introduced my friend to EQ unknowing he had a terribly addictive personality. He ended up playing 16 hours daily like a normal person for years. It was awesome because he as ALWAYS on for buffs, anything, he didnt seem to even have an agenda, just roaming around and buffing people.

He stopped showing up at school, and he put black trash bags up on all the windows. He was still online though. His parents tried to do an intervention and things like that to no success.

He ended up getting a blood clot in his leg from being immobile so long and they had to amputate one of them, he still plays MMORPGS all day every day.

I feel sort of bad because I gave him that first taste of pixil

My best friend at the time and I used to play EQ together. We were also coworkers. His primary was a Human Monk, mine was a Dark Elf SK. I also had a Wood Elf Druid on my same account who was always camped nearby for buffs and selling.

One day we decided to duo-camp Raster in Guk for his Monk, while not missing any work, so we decided to change our life schedules to what we called "vampire hours". We'd work 8am-5pm, go home and sleep, then wake up at midnight and log on, camping Raster and killing his PHs over and over until 7am, then went to work. Repeat.

This process took a week, but we finally got him. Meanwhile, all of our alts got EE bags and other goodies from Guk.

I spent so much time in Guk, I haven't even set foot into it on P99.... Not yet anyway.

Jesus fucking christ..

Worst thing I probably did was make my girlfriend watch me play for hours like an asshole. That or piss off my parents with late night gaming sessions after bedtime on school nights.

Before EQ, there was MUD or Multi Users Dungeons and I remember that I called my work and told my boss that I was going to be about 2 hours late to work because I didn't feel like loggin off and missing out on a raid.

I used to be a little scammer back in the day. Before the transfer slots in banks, I would pretend to buy items from people. The ol' meet up and say, "oh noooo, I have the rest of the plat on my other toon, but this item is for this toon." So, I'd give them like 100p for a 1k item, they'd trade the item, then I'd have a friend do a transfer for me to put the item on one of my actual characters. I was kind of stupid and thought if I deleted the character and deleted their file in the EQ folder, the GMs wouldn't be able to trace it. I never got banned though, so YEEHAW.

Anyway, fast forward a year or so since I started doing this shady stuff and I'm over at a buddies house who also plays EQ. He goes to watch a show and passes out on the couch, but left himself logged in on the character select. So I logged on one of his alts that had a Wurmy in their bank and transferred it over to one of my characters. I thought it was a fairly good plan since he hadn't used it in a while. Later that day, he gets back on (while I'm still there), logs on his alt and wanted to bring his other weapons to test the damage. Realizes right away that his Wurmslayer is missing and takes him about 5 minutes of searching to start thinking it was me who took it.

To settle it, I had to give the item back or the plat I got for it (can't remember if I sold it) and we did a 1v1 LARP battle, where we could choose what classes we'd be from EQ and duke it out. He chose monk with two plastic bats and I chose a druid, thinking I could kite him. Right away cast snare, he says resisted, then proceeds to beat the shit out of me with two bats. I don't steal or scam anymore. #lifelessons

Anyone remember the firepot scam? I made sooooo much money off that.

Back in the day you could drop money on the ground. And it wouldn't give you a message like "are you sure you want to drop this?", it would just drop. Also, fire was considered a wall of sorts, so you couldn't easily click on someone of they were sitting in fire. So what you did was sit in one of the big ass firepots in the EC tunnel and auction off some expensive item for a sweet deal "WTS fungi tunic, 35k, need to get it sold!" and you'd get replies quick. Tell them to come meet you at the firepot in the tunnel. They'd come on over, go to trade their money to me, click the fire instead of my character, and the money would drop to the ground. At that point you're already mid camp and waiting to snatch it before you log off.

I always did it on my little brothers account in case I got in trouble, but I never did. Once he found though out he went to like 15 different servers and scammed hundreds of thousands of plat to sell on ebay. Shortly after he did that there was a patch to fix it.

Good times. Kids are assholes. Wait...so are adults...

I played EQ all throughout high school. Summer months would involve work and band practice and sleeping in the basement for the summer. Made it easy to play until 6am without my parents knowing.

I also dated the same girl throughout this time. I'd make time for her and all, but we dated for five years (in high school and first year of college), so things had begun to wain. As the relationship started to fail, I would definitely opt to raid over having sex. Quarm was waiting!

Convinced my parents to get a second phoneline so I could play on dialup while they still could use the phone, I guess? But then I just used the phone to talk to my buddy while we were both playing EQ anyway.

Craziest thing I ever did in EQ was on P99 really. Camped my first jboots on the server back in like, pre-kunark, by staying up overnight and taking 15-minute cat naps between spawns on my office floor... heh.

For about 6 months my computer was down in 2000 so in order to play EQ I had to drive 30 miles to a library where I could install the game...play until they closed at night...and uninstall so I didn't get discovered. I did that at least 4 times a week for the whole 6 months.

When the game first came out I didn't yet have a PC that could run it, so I played exclusively on a buddies PC. He ended up getting in trouble because of grades and his parents canceled his account, much to our devastation. The science fair at school was coming up and you were allowed to pick whatever topic you wanted, so we came up with a bright idea "The effects of 48 hours of online gaming" and his parents had to reactivate his account for science. His mom even called the teachers to make sure we weren't BSing.

We played EQ for 2 days straight with no sleep and while we didn't win any ribbons, we got his account back, and an A

So in your mind "holier-than-thou-asshole" = someone who doesn't rip people off whenever they get the chance? There was a fair amount of that kind of douche-baggery going on during live with all the account sharing that happened to help guildies get flagged for raids. If that's the kind of thieving shit you pulled or think is funny I'm happy to make your list.

1. My first character was an Erudite Magician.

2. I used to play in my mom's office which had a Sky Light in it that allowed a lot of sunlight in. I used a poster display board (http://www.sciencebuddies.org/blog/graphics/2012-PDB-project_display_displayboard_mockup-small.jpg) on top of the black Acer CRT monitor that I swore was so cool cause the vents on top were slanted in a swoosh. Anyway I also hung a blanket over the top of the board so that it would overhang behind me and block all light. I used books on top of the monitor to keep the board in place and sometimes I balanced it with my head. I started in Toxx as an Erudite so you can imagine how BAD vision was in the forest with screen glare.

3. My mom's computer also had load times of 5-6 minutes, so I would run to the kitchen and make top ramen during load times. I would run back to the office super excited with Ramen and a fresh zone.

4. I also cried one time that I died, I fell out of my chair to the floor and started pounding the floor with my fists. I lost my level, I was bound on another continent and I had no idea where my corpse was.

5. I also died to Rungupp inside Toxx after he blinded me and feared me multiple times. I never found that corpse either, but I didn't cry that time because I was lower level. I probably threw a tantrum regardless.

6. I also stayed up until 4AM one time camping the froglok arch magus in lower guk with a necromancer. He was capable of soloing it but felt bad because he already had one. In between spawns I was doodling Gundam Fighter Suits and Pokemon on the floor of my room. I was listening to Nelly's album Country Grammar.

7. Sometimes I would fake being sick to have an 8 hour EQ session. One time my mom wouldn't let me stay home sick so I hid one of the hall closets under a bunch of blankets. My mom was screaming around the house looking for me. She said I was busted when she got home because she had to rush off to work and couldn't deal with my shenanigans. THOSE WERE AMAZING!

8. When I was walking home after school from the bus stop it was about a 1.5 mile walk, I would sometimes sprint the last half mile because I was so excited to play EQ.

10. My buddy also married a female wood elf in game and then she admitted to being a guy in real life after. I laughed and he was pissed.

I was introduced to EQ by a friend and his family. Him, his brother, and his mom all played EQ with computers in the same room (not always at the same time, though). I loved being at their place when they played. I wasn't allowed to own the game for awhile, so I was only ever exposed to it at my friend's.

I was young; 10-12 years old. The nights were magical when I got to visit them and I got to watch as they traveled across great expanses of land and sea, grouped in places like Crushbone or Oasis, and followed online friends through enchanted forests or gloomy swamps. Everything was awe-inspiring (remember seeing people in full chain mail or bronze??).

Anyway, there were many times when my buddy and I would wait for his mother to go to sleep, then we'd sneak downstairs and play EQ. Often times, one or both of us would end up falling asleep while trying to navigate a city or something. When the sun was rising, we'd return to our beds and go to sleep.

When we weren't allowed to play EQ for some reason or another, sometimes we'd act out EQ-like fights and sounds and fill in what certain monsters or places would be like with our imagination; wishing so badly that we could conquer those red cons and become mighty, powerful, and rich.

Sometimes I wish I could relive those evenings, even with the knowledge I have today..

My buddy and I shared an account for a while when we were freshman in high school. He also shared a room with his big mean older brother who was a senior. We used to stay up all night taking turns playing as quietly as we could so that we wouldn't wake his brother up who would then subsequently punch us. Hours of silent clicking and whispering in the dark.

One time I found a set of juggling balls under his bed and I ended up learning how to juggle pretty well while he was playing. All in darkness and silence.

This ones not exactly a fond memory, but its fun to look back on.

I had a crazy friend in high school who was a coke dealer and also played EQ. He had the Kunark/Norrath map framed with a glass cover on his wall. One night we took it down and outlined all the continents in lines of blow and stayed up all night xping and getting high as kites.

1. I remember being in 5th or 6th grade at my friends house. His mother had played EQ a lot and she played a cleric. She had a lot of RL adult friends who also played. I remember one of her friends who played a druid came over and he was really high level. My friend and I were still erudite mages in our teens.

He was camping the Frenzied Ghoul room in Lguk for the FBSS and we thought it was the most dark, mystical, crazy looking room. the Fabled FBSS also possessed such a strong lore around it during pre-kunark. We were so amazed that he was in that room. I think he had camped it for 8 hours straight and got no FBSS, we didn't watch the whole time, we were busy playing Playstation on the TV. It was still so cool and I remember asking him tons of questions.

2. Another time my friend and I REALLY wanted to play EQ together but his mother wouldn't log off. We went into the bed room where the Ethernet cable was routed and we would unplug it then re-plug it back in to make her go LD. We had to hold back our laughter every time because we heard her asking "WTF, again?!" "This connection is terrible tonight". We must have done it three times before we came out and "made" sure she was okay, asking what was wrong. We then went back and did it a couple more times until she decided "Screw this i'm going to sleep, and i'm going to call the internet company tomorrow". My buddy and I had a huge high-five, we waited 30mins for her conk out and then logged on to one of our characters. SUCCESS. Still feel kinda bad, but it was awesome nonetheless. Her character didn't die at all, not sure if any of her group mates died though, she was the cleric! LOL!

i guess you can say he was watching me play when he was "sleeping" but then again, i was having too much fun in the virtual world. my grades went up because i always typed everything...

I definitely learned how to type fast and grammar boosted a bit. I remember playing a live progression server and some guildie was trying to call me out for being 11 yrs old because of typing mistakes which I was roughly, and I would stage being older w a family lmao.

I remember my uncle from the mainland arriving on Sodor with a birthday gift for me. After opening it I noticed on the box it mentioned a subscription being required.

I figured what the hell, its not like there's anything to do on Sodor other than go to the cinema which provides less monthly entertainment for more money.

Fast forward several years and here I am.

I remember my buddy being an upper 40's Wizard right after Kunark launched and I pretty much thought he was gods gift to Norrath (which is funny because he was a fat nerdy kid two years younger than me in real life). I was in my early 20's at the time as a Druid and I wanted his GEBs so so bad. He eventually invited me over to stay the night and said he'd spend the whole night in an Efreeti group trying to get me a pair. I remember sitting there leaning over his shoulder, watching him camp Efreeti for like 12 hours and we never got a pair. We saw like 6 rings which he kept saying was amazing because they were the rate drop and I just took his word for it. Everyone in the group got a ring but we never saw boots. He did eventually get me some GEBs though, I was so proud.

I don't know if it qualifies as a "crazy thing EQ made me do back in the day," but here goes.

My first and main character until PoP was a wizard (when I switched to an SK and my wife switched to Shammy). I wanted Jboots some something fierce so I could kite more effectively (was still too low level for quad kiting), and had camped the ancient cyclops numerous times, and no luck after weeks and weeks of trying.

One night I got the ancient cyclops camp to myself, but it was hairy because I was at knife's edge of being able to kill him solo due to my level and gear. A guild mate had nothing better to do and offered to camp it with me, and we got to chatting.

We stayed up all night (both of us being on Eastern time) talking about this and that under the sun, but still no drop for the boot quest. I was probably camped there for 20 hours at that point.

We had decided that we were going to call it a night, but then changed our minds and waited for one last ancient cyclops kill. Sure enough, he dropped the ring and I was the proud owner of jboots to go with my clicky pull stick (Staff of Temperate Flux).

Not the longest camp I'm sure in EQ history, but it was rewarding as hell back in the day!

Take everything off my character and ground transfer. Then delete the character. Call up verant and tell them I deleted the wrong character. I would have to call a couple times to get the right person to do it.
Log in and my character would be fully geared. Sell that shit and put gear back on. I had to do this 4-5 times easy.

During the first double experience eq ever had I camped pofire for 60 consecutive hours with my guild. It was amazing I think I got 400 aa's.
