Game Will Not Load Past Server Select

ok so how can I force EQ to load up in windowed mode? I can alt/enter at login screen and it goes to windowed mode, when I click the EQ server (P99) it starts to load and goes straight into full screen and refuses to load in full screen. How can I make it windowed mode and KEEP it windowed mode from the start?

Isn't there a file in the folder I can edit to keep it in windowed mode?

Actually i did not. I need to try that BUT, if I move it will the installation point to the new location and would I need to rename any files?

No you would just have to go into the shortcut properties like you did in your video and change the target destination so something like C:/Everquest instead of /programfiles/everquest if you put it directly in your C: folder. Your client ui might reset to default though and you would have to redo anything you changed(resolution and such) because it will be making a new eqclient.ini file in the folder as opposed to using the one you have now hidden away in a windows folder somewhere.

So by installing/moving EQ to just say your Root C drive folder it creates all the files in the same place so the game can read and edit it at its discretion. I've always installed EQ outside of program files folder so i have never personally had this issue or had to fix it. I'm just going by the collective knowledge of the issue i have seen over the years.

aight will do this when I get online on my gaming machine. It's weird though, my laptop has it installed in program files and it runs fine /shrug. I'll let you know how it turns out.

ok did that, does same exact thing as before. This is what I want to try now, I looked at my eqclient.ini file, and since I have not actually logged all the way into the game, I don't have any resolutions settings actually in that ini file. If someone would be so kind as to OPEN there eqclient.ini file, copy the entire file and paste it here so I can copy it into my own. I need yours to already be set to windowed mode. Maybe then mine will load in windows mode. Currently it is STILL trying to load in full screen for some reason.

I don't understand lol this is a $4,000 tower, it has Win7 and the best components on the market, this isn't some cheap PC or anything and it is copied and setup just like my laptop & my laptop runs smooth.

Found a nice step by step guide, everything is update. Re-ran EQ, same thing again. Is it possible something didnt install right with EQ?
Gonna try wineq again since now its in Windows mode at all times.

I am about ready to give up on this, it's just not worth the effort. :( I can play any game on the market, yet I can't play this 20 year old game on a free shard. oh and if it helps, EQ Live plays just fine on this machine.

Do you have another computer at your disposal for a minute that might be able to boot eq? If so could always boot up and set the windowed mode preferences on a lower res over on a different comp, save that eq client to a flash drive, then copy it onto the comp you want to play on

I already copied the entire folder from my laptop to this machine. Thats what I am running on now, STILL does what it did before I did the copy.
Even though we still have not found a fix, I thank all of you guys for the help so far. Maybe something will turn up. Really sucks I cannot play p99 grrrr

I will say this, I rebooted my machine and when I log in now, it doesn't kick me to login screen, it throws up a pop up saying I got an unknown error when trying to log into server. Something different this time /shrug

Unistalled the old EQTitanium, I even went and PAID for the full version of Daemion Tools. Did a fresh reinstall, did all the proper steps, logged in, it did the same thing again. Its like its TRYING to load it up in full screen.

Funny thing is I couldn't find any eqclient.ini file in the folder anywhere, I made a new one and copied the info from page 1 on this thread, still same thing. I mean SERIOUSLY??? What could it possibly be? I even added the updated files for P99, I ran it in admin mode as well. Still same crap.


I think its a resolution issue because primary monitor #1 goes full screen on launch while the resolution on monitor #2 goes all wacky, like the wallpaper gets all small like in the links I showed you on page 1. Thats what I think is going on, a resolution problem ..... now I have no idea how to look at that lol but thats what I think.

EQ should just always be stored outside of program files folder period. Too many things can go wrong with it being inside there and no reason it needs to be installed there. Fresh install outside of Program files folder is best way to go.

Something got me to thinking. I think everything I done is 100% correct with the install, I even redid the install today and place the install into a folder OUTSIDE the programs files section and still same problem. This is a brand new machine, could it be the video cards mucking with the game itself? Running 980Ti's. Anyone else running this new card and not having issues? I am just trying to rule stuff out.

I had this issue once as well, and what fixed it was any one of these things:
1. set your eqclient.ini resolution to match your monitor's native resolution
2. Set the icon you launch EQ from to run as an administrator
3. Set the icon you launch eq from to run in compatibility mode, windows XP service pack 2 or 3 should work.


I apologize if anyone has already suggested trying this, or if you've already fixed your problem.

Edit: going back and reading your problems, I'm almost certain this is a resolution issue. I'm not a super tech savvy guy but I was having the exact same problems and doing the above 3 things I suggested fixed it for me. If not, I would set EQ to run in windowed mode always (eqclient.ini) and mess with the resolutions (again, in the eqclient.ini file) until you find one that works. That's what I had to do. Its annoying but it eventually worked when I found the right setting.

Apparently this can help, though I am not exactly sure of how to do it.

I change my ini settings to the exact thing you posted, same crap happens. One thing I want to post is, I logged on Live EQ and went into the server exactly how I was supposed to with no problems (Windowed Mode and all). Apparently this can help, though I am not exactly sure of how to do it.
No idea how to do that even though I have NEVER had to do that with quad cores or anything else.


I had an issue where one day this EQ client decide to up and start spitting out memory access violations and would crash the game when trying to login.
It turned out to be related to the eqclient.ini settings that got corrupted.

What Tasslehof suggested, is a good place to start.


Questions I would pose to you :

1. Is this installation copy the same as you have on your laptop (which you said is working correctly?)

2. Have you considered uninstalling it all, cleaning out any trace of EverQuest and downloading the prebundled P99 package on TPB (or similar?) Search for project 1999 everquest get the Velious version.

You won't need to install it - extract and place into whatever directory you want.

And I would run it before making any eqclient.ini adjustments. It was never required for me to get it working.

I would like to thank you guys that are trying to get me going, it means alot when people stand up and help strangers when they could easily scroll to the next post. Thank you, I really am wanting to play this game and you guys have been great so far.

I think the #1 thing I need to find out is why does it keep trying to load my game in full screen when it is set to windowed mode and why does it screw up when I alt/enter to put it BACK into windowed mode it throws me back to log in scree, Why does it go to server select fine in windowed mode when I alt/enter but as soon as I go to log into the server BOOM back to full screen. I think thats what is keeping me out of the game.

I use a single 980Ti and haven't had any issues. Not sure if them being SLI'ed would cause any issues with EQ though.

Have you tried changing your primary display and having the game open on your other monitor? If not, I would also remove any ini you've created, at least temporarily for this test.

In a previous post, someone linked to a post stating the user disabled auto-clocking in BIOS and this fixed his issue. Did you try that as well?

No I have not, that is actually a good idea. BRB checking this suggestion.
Results: &%^$#! Same result as before, I even run it first with current ini and then dumped the ini and let it remake a new one. I changed displays to a new primary display and it did the same thing on the other monitor. Good idea bro, but not dice on that one.

Unsure what this auto clocking is, is it meaning overclocking and if so nothing on this PC is overclocked. If thats not what it means please educate me.

In the logs folder there should be a text only file called 'dbg' (I think it is short for debug).

Open it and copy/paste it's contents here; perhaps someone will be able to work out where the problem lays.

I deleted the one I edited remember, it made a brand new one. Aight waiting on someone to show me the fix then ;)

edit: I am almost 100000000000000% this is a resolution issue BUT I also cannot force this game on this new machine to load in Windowed mode and yes I have the ini set to windowed mode and it STILL loads in full screen.

I change my ini settings to the exact thing you posted, same crap happens. One thing I want to post is, I logged on Live EQ and went into the server exactly how I was supposed to with no problems (Windowed Mode and all). Is this still what your EQclient.ini file looks like? If so change the windowed resolutions to something your monitor shows.

Where is this eqclient.ini file located? I see no mention of your resolution settings and such that should be there. Please use the last post link i posted to find your real eqclient ini file.

Notice in my Eqclient file there are many things your doesnt have(the luclin stuff can be ignore) but you are missing the sections like [video mode].
This makes me think that there is still another eqclient file that your EQ is pulling from. Dont copy my section because my resolution listings are all messed up because i play windowed but cut down my eq window to only take up a portion of my screen.

Well, isn't that because I have never actually made it into the game so it hasn't done that yet? Also could I not simply copy and paste yours and try that? Also no i checked, there is only 1 ini in my folder.

Hello MASQue. I don't know if you resolved this, but I was having the exact same problem. I have an M5A99FX Pro 2.0 motherboard with an AMD FX 8350 and an R7 370. EverQuest is installed in its own folder, right off the root drive and I followed the instructions for installation, just like you did, save that I used Duxa's resolution changer to get 1920x1080. I have 16GB of RAM and tried opening ports and making firewall allowances, updated all of my drivers, et cetera. It had to be the software, right? Kind of, I guess. I think it's a speed cheat check and it is looking for gross clock speed variations.

So I turned off turbo and uninstalled overdrive: nothing worked. Then I got an idea that maybe I needed to update my BIOS, since it had been years since I'd done so. If it's working, why mess with it?
After learning that there is a new file format for BIOS upgrades (new, like, five years ago. 8b), I put the BIOS file on my FAT32-formatted, House Stark USB memory stick and flashed it with EZFlash from the then-current BIOS. After reorganizing the boot order and checking that no overclocking was going on, I got back into Windows 10 and booted up EQ. It worked straight away!

I do hope this works for you. I logged into Cabilis and was overjoyed to see at least 12 other people running around. It has been years since I've experienced that.
