View Full Version : Raster of Guk - debunking exaggerated claims

Hey Monks,
I bought a long sock and I'm planning to take Raster this weekend. I added some spawn probabilities to the Raster wiki a few weeks ago, and I'm about to put them to the test. Reading forum-lore online however is making me nervous...here's the deal...
Almost every account I've read [1 (http://www.castle-grounds.co.uk/eq/raster.htm)][2 (http://wiki.project1999.com/Raster_of_Guk)][3 (http://www.monkly-business.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8081)] says that Raster has a spawn rate of 5%. Fine.
It's easy to verify that a PH or Raster can be forced to spawn 3 times daily. Great.
It's also very common for people to claim up to a 200+ hour camp! When I heard this, I thought, surely this must be game time versus RL time...240 EQ hours is 12 RL hours. Plausible. The same source (link 1) which claimed a 200 hour max camp says a 40 hour average camp however, and if we assume this is game time, then that's only 2 RL hours. Clearly, when this person says 200+ hour camp, they mean 200+ RL hours.
So one of several things is true:
Raster's spawn rate is less than 5%
Raster's spawn rate is conditionally dependent on some other variables.
People are really, really terrible at estimating time.
I have my fingers crossed that it's option 3...

If I had screenshots of all the attempts i did on him (I used to make this robe to sell), I can confirm this camp is atrocious. I remember logging in at 6 p.m once, setting up camp - on a holiday mind you - and checking every 28 minutes for about 20 hours until he finally popped. Not as severe as that standard norm, but there was weekend wasted it felt like. Although, I've also had a 15 minute camp before... It's just really random, and if RNG is not in your favor, prepare for take-out..

On live, I camped Raster in about a day and a half.
And by that, I mean I camped him for 36 hours straight before he finally spawned.

problem is Lguk has a terribly long respawn rate - 30 min blows

Over the years I've camped a bunch of rasters. Once I killed him only to die while looting. Idol Rotted.... Have fun. Make sure to do the 8am trick and get the extra spawn.

40 RL hours, then gave up back on live. Here I convinced guildies and we killed Brother Q instead - much easier!

Does Bro Q summon or anything funky? or is he like the steamfont rogue epic fight where you just kite him around safely?

Nothing safe about a yellow con GM monk NPC.

He regens like crazy and quads for 300. Need 2 good groups with good DPS. No faction hit.

I got the Idol on the 5th spawn with 22% cumulative probability to spawn Raster successfully at least one time. My lucky day I guess.
Added tables and a plot to the Raster wiki (http://wiki.project1999.com/Raster_of_Guk). Hope it's helpful.

Took 14 people, mostly lev 60s and was a decent fight. Won't kite him easily, has massive regen. It's almost a raid encounter. But if you're in a guild, imo, it's easier to spend a few hours talking guildies into helping, than the many many potential hours at Rasta

It's a micro raid like General. 1 group-able by raiders, 2+ group-able ish by casuals guilds.

Personal experience: 35 place holders before i got Raster. Camp is boring as crap after you break the room but pretty decent exp, went in at 46, left at 48, had a druid friend pop in and buff me from time to time but prob wasn't necessary...
Bro Z was up on Sunday so went and did the turn in. Not having Targin the Rock and thinking wouldn't it be cool to get a rotwf AND epic thought, lets have a go at him after doing the turn in (I'd heard that a group of mid 50's can do him)...
60 Druid, 60 Pally tank, 50 monk, 47 bard, 51 cleric... got him to 95% before we said Nope... druid evac... May have gone better if we'd have had a way to slow him...

I've done the raster camp 3 times on P99 (first for my epic, second for robe, third for another robe after MQing) and never spent more than 8 RL hours at the camp. The few people who have really bad luck are of course the loudest, but on top of that other people hear about it and take up the story as their own because 200 hours sounds a lot cooler than 2 hours when showing off your poop socking badge of honor.

Need way more DPS than that due to regen.

I had heard tell of Brother Raster's elusive nature from peers at the Ashen Hand. The information sat in my stomach like oily pumice stone in ice water. I'd heard it rumored that he frequented (infrequently) the ruins of Old Gukta and had elected to explore the moldering caverns before the Innothule floodwaters prohibited such a delve. My mentor, Grandmaster Xltx was kind enough to show me the way and it so happened that the fates smiled upon me a second time that night.
Brother Raster, the Raster of Guk awaited my arrival. We set upon me the moment I presented myself while Grandmaster Xltx dealt with a few disagreeable minotaurs. The trial was swift and sweet and when we had finalized I relieved Brother Raster of The Idol sought by Brother Zephyl, the Hermit of Her.

Since the epic change it might have flagged him to a 46 Reg to do it.

Seems a little mean to let the NPC eat it instead of giving them back... but I have the feeling that hailing the NPC would have resulted in a clue that something is amiss.

I have ran by a few times and seen him up randomly in lguk, never tried to camp in on p99 though. One time I did kill him, and ended up going to get targin to spawn in ~3 ph's and made another robe oldschool way instead of killing bro Z or Q, was fun stuff. On live I think i spent like 20hours, then 11 hours, then another 10 hours across 3 days to get him.

He spawned after a 28hours rl camp. The problem is I got killed by a chanter before I got The kill. #lifeOnRed

I went to Raster camp at lvl 44 (solo) and after 3 separate 3 hour sessions i finally got him. I then made my way over to King camp in SolB with a group and was able to get 2 Targin pops in 3-4 hours (other monk won the first roll). I was 46 by the time I did the turn-ins.
Note - Bro Z can be a pain to spawn.... killed PH's for like 3 hours with nothing and gave up and went to bed. Logged in this morning and he was already up so I did my turn in.

Keep in mind it's also entirely possible the spawn rate is different on P99 just like many other things.

Fuck that camp. I'll help you kill Bro Z if you spawn him. Send me a tell on Elzhi.

I had a real similar experience, a friend camped raster for 9 hours, then a group after him got a spawn like half hour later, then I step in and get 2 hours later.
In contrast, I spent 3 days in rathe killing bro z place holders (granted, like 3-4 hours each day only). I gained a level from killing hill giants (level 50... Before the HG buff patch) before he pooped.

Like most spawns on this server. RNG = Random Number Generator
Could be 30 mins, could be 30 hours. The key is to not get burnt out on it. You will eventually get your target. Sooner or later.
