I played EQ many years ago when it was only the Kunark expansion. Im playing a dark elf shadowknight and I just dinged 5. I have been hanging around what I used to know as "Newbie Log" back in the day (a large log a little outside Neriak). I have no good clue about what to do next. Where is someplace good for me to look for a group and or solo if needed? Maybe a place to find gear? a decent place to get to lvl 9? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Name in game is bethay!

Go to EC and kill everything you see that cons blue. Crushbone is good if you want to grp/meet people. You can hit up Befallen at 8-10 and get some fun dungeon battles going. Around level 12 I would head to the Karanas (NK specifically, do this quest - http://wiki.project1999.com/Research_Aid) and farm Lightstones/Greater Lightstones. If you do this quest from 12-16 you'll amass about 500pp which is a huge leg up for a young SK.

Buy a Nathsar Greatsword (or a similar 100-200pp good ration weapon), some banded armor and some +HP rings and continue the slaying!!

You can progress farther in Nektulos forest if you want to. There are some slightly higher level mobs in that zone as you head south away from Neriak. Beyond Nek you can go to EC and then WC and/or north Ro.

Collect deathfist belts from orcs and derv rings from dervs. Even when those aren't giving huge XP from kills you can get sizeable XP gains just from turning in the belts and rings. Turn the belts into WFP guard Hazran (for evil race turn in). For rings you can turn them into Ortalllius in South Ro.

Belt turn-ins give like 3-5% xp per turn in (depending on your level) and rings give about the same for each turn in (3 rings). This can really add up and super charge those early levels.

Hunt in EC. Kill every Orc Pawn you see and eventually the merchants will /con apprehensive and sell to you.

DON'T Go to Crushbone. You'll ruin your faction in Neriak and you need Neriak to like you for a long long time.

If you prefer to stay in Nektulos:

No matter if they con green and no XP, always kill large spiders, spiderlings, bears, and wolves. Keep the LQ/MQ/HQ pelts for later use or selling in EC tunnel. Keep the spider/spiderling silk as silk if you want to sell it, otherwise turn the silks into swatches and threads for later use with tailoring. Stockpile bone chips.

If you don't have full patchwork, it's time to learn tailoring and make some.

Kill the halflings over the hill west of the newbie log. You can also kill the undead by the pyramid south of Neriak.

Eventually, cross the southern bridge and kill the undead in the southeast corner.

Once those green out, obtain a magic weapon from a player selling in the EC tunnel. You can use your accumulated pelts, silks, and bone chips to help finance that. If you have 100pp to spare, get some banded in EC tunnel.

Kill the two willowisps that roam the southwest corner. This is where the money rolls in, as the wisps drop coin and a lightstone that sells for a few gold and a greater lightstone that sells for 4p. You can XP off of these two wisps until LV15 if you want, but do keep killing them until you save up enough plat for two Platinum Fire Wedding Rings (5ac 55hp each).

/tell Vandilx in game for other tips. I'm a veteran DE SK from live currently working on a LV30 DE SK here on P1999.

It's my humble thought that all Dark Elves starting at level one should make the run over to Freeport and do the errand running of the Janam and Rebby quests until the middle of level 3, or all the way to level 4 depending.

http://wiki.project1999.com/Note_for_Janam
http://wiki.project1999.com/Note_for_Rebby

You can make a pair of macro hotkeys with the following lines.

/say What Janam and Rebby's?
/pause 1
/autoinventory

and

/say What messages?
/pause 1
/autoinventory

Doing this will improve your faction to where you can buy or sell with all common Freeport merchants and use the bankers in North freeport regardless of your class or worship of Innoruuk. The North Freeport guards might still hate your guts, but the bankers themselves will be okay with you and you can bank standing behind the counter if you want.

After doing this, I'd usually press on to level 5 around the newbie log like you described, and then rush off to where the Shadowed Man camp is sort of close to the edge of the zone where the Bard NPC is and hunt shadowed wolves, a couple of roaming skeletons, and black bears. This will get you to level 7 easily. You can press on for level 8 by hunting the undead around the wizard teleport spire and the single zombie spawn that appears across and over the hill from them (closer to the river direction).

Once you're level 8 more areas open up for you, including Befallen (wandering high NPC mobs suck though), Northern Ro desert, and orc camps in East Commons. If you were playing a class that could invis and use gate / bind affinity, I'd highly recommend Faydwer for dwarven skeletons in butcherblock around the druid ring and/or crushbone orcs because the belts sell well, it's great exp, and it only screws up your Indigo Brotherhood faction which no one cares about unless you absolutely HAVE to go into the warrior guild building for some reason. Even then, if you do screw your faction for that building and decide you need it later for a quest, it's easily fixed by leveling from 20-24 in Timorous Deep killing pansy wood elven scouts and rangers at their outpost.

Edit - a really cheesy thing to do that might help if you are fresh to the server with a melee character is to make a magician and level it to 4, and get both meditate and the summon bandage spell. You summon a full stack of 20 per shot and can just throw them on the ground to pick up with your main to save cash. Leveling the magician to 8 is an option to get the free 4 slot 100% weight reduction bags that might also assist you with your hunting, and you can always store No Rent items on a corpse (such as a level 1 alt that picks them up from the ground and punches out a guard.)

The first rule about Everquest: Don't take it too seriously. It's a game. Have fun with it.
Put serious effort into getting your life in order, paying down your debts, getting fitter, and getting yourself into a better situation, before being serious about EQ.
