View Full Version : Miscellaneous: Hum/Bar should start with candles

I did a few searches but found nothing on this one in bug reports.

All humans and barbarians should start with A Worn Candle (changed to Gloomingdeep Lantern in 2005 on live - it's the same item ID). I don't know for sure but Erudites probably get a candle too.

Most of the proof I can find is from 2004.

March 2004-
I'm playing a lvl 8 BL Barbarian, who started with a 'worn candle' which allowed me to see around the tunnels into the Black Burrow.

BARのWARで始めました。最初に持っていたA Worn Candleをすてて、
Large Lanternを買ったのですが、最初のキャンドルと違って持ち物欄に
入れておくだけでは明るくなりませんでした。Wax Candleを
買いなおしたのですがやっぱり左手に装備しないと明るくなりません。
何とかする方法は無いものでしょうか?

^ posted on 09/22/2004, person is a Barbarian warrior stating that they started out with A Worn Candle, bought a lantern (which didn't work), and then purchased a Wax Candle, which didn't work unless equipped in off-hand.

To the top for Green and night blindness

Second that. Blindness should be a thing on Green and Blue for that matter.

If it's a limitation of the Titanium client, Secrets (or Haynar?) can probably hack it in no time.

Looking for better sources for this.

Earliest source I've found so far is January 2001. I can't say yet that they were in at launch.

Do you guys remember the starting equipment you got when your character was new? The guild tunic, perhaps a candle, and a goatskin filled with milk?

You should, depending on your race also have a torch or candle, and everyone will start with 5 flasks of water and 5 muffins.

Found a better one (it's listed on Everlore as Worn Candle):

Levels 1-3
Before you head out, be sure to scribe and memorize your spells. Cast them a couple times to get the feel for how they work. You begin your hunt (if you're starting from Surefall Glade) in Qeynos Hills--which is located thru the very long, very dark tunnel. Human players should be sure to equip their candles for that first trip--and once out in the Hills, ask if someone will get you a Fire Beetle eye which is a far superior light source (and a neccesary component for the Flame Lick spell).

The light source value should be quite weak, less than a fire beetle eye.

This isn't launch but it's very close.

I believe Erudites should start with these candles too (I saw a few posts about Erudites using them).

That's some really good research. Like many other folks I could plainly remember the candles, but couldn't remember if they were in place from the start. You may have uncovered another issue as well: Does anyone actually start in Surefall on P99? I want to say the wife's (human) Druid started in Qeynos here on P99.

There is still enough doubt around this that I don't feel comfortable saying they were in at launch. Would appreciate first hand accounts of candles nearer release day.

I found this newsgroup post from May 31st, 1999 stating that new players got candles:

Depends on what class you chose. Many classes get a candle. Try
turning out the lights in the room you are in, or turn up the gamma
correction.

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/alt.games.everquest/wSZuGgCsZaQ/Gvadp7WKLDQJ

So we are now at May 1999.

Another one:

I always got a candle to start with, actually. And I quickly learned that
new light sources are free; the Fire Beetles have them. Unfortunately that
last part doesn't apply to you 'coz there don't seem to be any Fire Beetles in
Faydark.

In any case, I also adjusted my system gamma and monitor brightness to
take the edge off the darkness.

I feel like this is now getting very close to launch.

Okay got it! WHEW.

Candles were in at launch!

3/18/99

4. The Darkness. Well, I go back and forth on this. My Barbarian in
Everfrost
could actually see pretty well with his little candle in one hand and a
sword in the other.

Does anyone remember if we really started out with a small boost to a weapon skill back in 1999? My memory is telling me that they were all zero and I primed my weapon skill with starting training points before heading out to kill my first rat.

Trying to get all the details needed for this to be included.

Barbarians and Humans should all start with a candle. What about Erudites?

Dolalin
10-02-2019, 01:10 AM
Erudites should start with them too based on what I've read.

My first character was an erudite enchanter, WAY the heck back.
Needless to say, she never even got her tunic. Why? Because I fell
into a pool of water somewhere in a dark room where I couldn't see,
and hey, my note, spells and candle were still on her body - yay for
THAT change, I tells ya...

That post is another reminder that the candle should be an incredibly bad light source. Better than nothing but just barely.

BTW, don't forget the ghoulish purple skull-shaped candle Bertoxxulous Humans start with! Anyone have evidence of it?

Dolalin
10-02-2019, 03:58 AM
OHHH I think I remember that now! I will try to find info Videri. Do you remember what it was named?

Dolalin
10-02-2019, 05:04 AM
I think I found it.

Evil Qeynos humans should start with a Candle of the Plaguebringers:

http://lucy.allakhazam.com/item.html?id=9982

All candles should have a bag graphic when equipped, and must be equipped to function as a light source.

Were there other evil candles? I can't see any in Lucy.

Fixed, pending update

Humans, Erudites, and Barbarians start with 'A Worn Candle'.
Humans worshipping Bertoxxulous instead start with 'Candle of the Plaguebringers'.
