View Full Version : Thinking about coming back, any friendly tips?

Hi everyone, I played a shaman named Winga and was a member of BDA before real life stole me away. I have my epic and clicky boots, but otherwise my gear is pretty janky.
I never played Velious, and I'm considering coming back to experience some of the zones, grind it out to 60 and a respectable amount of plat, and finally experience torpor firsthand. I don't have a great deal of free time anymore (why I quit in the first place), so I'd probably only get to play an hour or two here and there.
Googling and searching through the wiki have provided me with a startling lack of information about what there is to do in Velious besides raiding. What are the new small or full group exp/loot camps I could experience as a 58 shaman? Can a very casual player with limited playing time get access to any of the gear sets besides the dwarf one?
I appreciate your taking the time to read this and respond with anything you think is helpful.

From Velious I recommend you visit the Tower of Frozen Shadow. It is quite possibly one of my most favorite dungeons in the whole game, and at your level you could easily help some teams work their way to the top in order to earn the keys. Aside from that, check out the coldain rings and shawl quests if you want to go Coldain faction and have some interest in working trade skills. Small disclaimer though, I've only recently converted to P99, so I have only done Velious stuff on EQ Live.

The obvious one, consider another guild. A bloated guild like that with a loot council isn't going to be good to you in terms of seeing pixels quickly in the end game.
A lot of Velious leveling is a "bring your own group" type thing if you're not planning to solo. People still stick to the usual classic/Kunark paths :/

Yea this is a good point. I'd suggest checking out Swish's guild. Oh wait Swish doesn't play he just posts cat gifs 14000 times and censors subreddits.
To answer your question OP there isn't a whole lot of group action going on in Velious. Your best bet is trying to get a group in Velks at Frenzy/Dogs/BM. There's occasionally groups there. For the most part people still group in Kunark dungeons as the exp is significantly better in most cases.

Skyshrine and kael faction armor will be tough if you're not guilded or willing to drop 10's of k's on mqs. There's lots of pretty decent armor upgrades though, particularly dragon armor that drops in ww, a lot of it is good for shaman too. You can probably duo most of the dragons. Kael arena can be done with a good group with some decent drops, velks too has decent drops and is decent xp. If you're looking for a duo partner hit me up, got a 57 monk always up for duoing.

If I ran a guild it wouldn't have a loot council, it wouldn't bully smaller guilds into disbanding and it would close recruitment rather than accepting half the server for the sake of trying to be relevant in the raid discussion forum due to sheer numbers.
Also I logged in last night and didn't post 1 cat gif yesterday, sorry about that.

You're totally right. BDA is a zerg guild that needs to close recruitment. That's why we consistently have less numbers for everything than A/A CSG and Anonity. We're literally the least zerg raid force out of all the major guilds. I honestly have no idea where you even get your shit from. I guess maybe like a year ago the last time you actively played we had more ppl or something?

Don't. The end-game is toxic and dominated by assholes.

I was content in BDA, and it was already the largest raiding guild on the server when I stopped playing. As I understand it, it got that big because it didn't kick members whose RL situations prevented consistent raid attendance. With such a membership policy you pretty much have to have a loot council or dkp bidding system or some other way to distribute gear selectively. I just don't really plan on raiding anything at all anymore, so I don't know where that puts me as far as guild options go.
Thank you guys for the advice you've given so far. I'm kind of surprised Velious isn't a bigger draw. People would rather sit in the same dungeons they've been farming for years? I vaguely remember a lot of small group quests with pretty decent rewards being talked about before velious's release.
So far we've got: ToFS, Velks, Kael arena, and WW dragons. Any other suggestions?

As sad as it sounds, people want the quickest path to 60. So that generally means lots of people on the path of...
Unrest > Mistmoore > City of Mist > KC > Sebilis
Though there's something to be said for substituting in Upper Guk and Sol B along the way as there's people there too.

as a 58 sham you should be able to find a group that is willing to raid places like kael arena for thurg quality armor. it doesn't require a raid to kill most of the giants that drop armor (obviously some of the harder ones needs a raid).
You can 1 group places like velks , dragons necropolis, some parts of kael, some west waste dragons.
you can find pick up raids for plane of growth and roll for shaman armor as it drops. Only 2 guilds are able to kill Tunare at this moment and they usually welcome everyone on the server help clear the zone.
it is hard to say if you would have access to anything above thurg quality quest armor. This answer depends on a couple of factors.
What guild you will play with?
If they raid places like halls of testing during your play time & how they distribute the loot.
a 3rd option is purchasing multiquest.

Hmm, turns out I was 59, not 58, and after two brief play periods I went from 30% in to 40% in. I'll probably grind out the rest of the trip to 60 where I'm at before going exploring.
But I'll still only have about 30k saved for torpor, so I'll need to grind plat for a long while. Fortunately, it seems BDA wasn't bothered by my sudden and prolonged absence, so I should have plenty of people to hit up cash camps with.
How busy are the various Velious dungeons I could solo in? Can I solo anything in siren's grotto without (or with, for that matter) torpor? The feel I'm getting from this thread is that velious is a veritable ghost town, which seems promising for finding a place to grind out some plat.

Velious mobs are harder than old world/kunark stuff. I'm not sure of great solo cash camps unless you're 60 with torpor. SG is hard but also probably overtuned (much like many velious dragons) even if you're geared to the teeth with all your spells. Think everything in there hits for 230+, is very resistant, and there are big clumps of enchanter mobs and then some cleric mobs that will ch through walls. Oh yeah also elementals that dragon ae for 400 +dispel, quad for 280, and will just plain wreck your shit.
Maybe some stuff in velks can be soloed for cash, but I'd still say duos open up more options for you. Velks even is pretty open, I rarely see more than 5 people in any one velious zone unless some raid is happening

Step 1 ) Create a new character!! A wood elf!! Ranger, obviously.
Step 2 ) Learn to fletch and make a rough hickory bow!!!!
Step 3 ) Start using bow!! And look for better bows!!!
Step 4 ) There is no step 4! You are already a wood elf archer!!! Your life is complete!!! :D
