You'd need to max it, but then it would take a while to recoup the costs. Eventually you'd be in the black given enough time.
are you an enchanter or have access to one?

I spent between 8k-10k getting JC up to skill 242. I had to make and sell approximately 50 pieces of velium jewelry to make that back and break even. For example:
1 Velium Bar = 252pp , 1 Fire Opal = 50p, 10% failure rate = 332p cost to make
Sell in EC for 500p means 168p profit. Only have to sell 48 of those to make back 8k. :(

Classic allowed you to make marginal profit on combining and selling back the resulting jewelry to a vendor provided you enchanted the bar. This marginal cost was more or less offset by the 5% generic failure rate on combines in the long run though.
On this server, sort of you can? It isn't a huge amount of money.
Aside from Alchemy, almost no tradeskills are worth the money invested to skill them up. Classic-Velious was very bad from a tradeskill end. The developers got much better at making tradeskills relevant in Luclin and PoP though.

Easier to make back than Kunark/Vanilla era JCing, arguably.

Would be easier/cheaper/less frustrating to make a porter for easy $$$. I am actually thinking about leveling a druid or a wizard when my Necromancer hits 60...probably Druid...

It was pretty profitable a couple years ago, especially if you farmed your own gems.
These days you're more or less selling jewelry at or around cost of mats. So if farm gems, it's pretty much just a way to sell them quicker.

This is pretty much it. I made a lot from JC back in the day but now its hard to get much more than the cost of the combine. With the fail rate it isnt nearly as worth it as it used to be. I have moved on to mostly doing combines for people that provide the materials and they pay me for successful combines.

Yes, I'm leveling a High Elf chanter.
Well, I was thinking that while I was leveling I could choose mobs that drop certain JC materials so I could level+farm and raise JC at the same time.
I just want to be very efficient with what zones I spend my time in. I don't want to backtrack.

Upper Guk yields a tonne of gems. I remember spiders especially drop a lot, but even the frogs do too.

The goblin camp in WW drops just about every low level gem that sells for less than 1 plat, very very often.

Jewelcrafting is not so bad if you just use a Autofire macro to do skill ups for you.

Also if you're ever banned for 3rd party program usage on P99, just argue Catherin got away with it and they should give you the same leniency ;)

Years later and still no idea what actually happened but still mad about it. I'm just trying to be helpful to people but you continue to e-stalk me and shit up threads. Nobody cares anymore. Take it to RnF where it belongs.

You're right the past is the past, just be available for me if I happen to get caught using things I shouldn't be using okay? I could use your counsel to get out of jail.

I really hope its not true about you also being a guide because I don't see how it is going to end well for anyone.
Since you *refuse* to let it go i'm going to explain what happened in a way that even an idiot like you should be able to understand. Really tired of people like you with nothing better to do trying to ruin my reputation. I actually used to like you Swish before you mutated into whatever the hell you are now. Never wronged you in any way. You have just become a pretty sad individual.
The truth, like most things, is not as interesting as the rumor mill. So don't dig out the popcorn just yet.
The History:
Autofiring became a pretty big thing among the top guilds after the C/R raid system was implemented. Trackers could still FTE at this time but variances were reduced to 16 hours. this meant that all of a sudden other guilds could spend some time to compete and TMO was starting to lose their stranglehold on every mob in the game.
I was an Officer of Taken at the time and we were doing really well. A few weeks into it something changed. TMO was getting all the FTEs again. a lot of them before the mob was even visable on the screen. AFK necros at the Faydedar spawnpoint had pets instantly engaging wandering trash mobs as soon as they got into line of sight. It was pretty obvious what was going on.
The facts:
1. I used autofire twice. I logged the results and sent them to Nilbog to show what was going on. It was an attempt to shed light on the situation so that there could be change. Below is a screenshot of that PM. Enjoy

2. It was never a secret. I talked about it openly. Sorry.
3. I never got an FTE using it. Sorry again!
4. The mistake I made was that I didn't wait to get the okays from the GMs to do this before I actually did this. I also didnt consider that Nilbog probably never even looked at my PM, so the GMs did not know at all and that's on me. It was explained to me that if I had communicated it beforehand I would not have gotten into trouble. But i recieved a 30 day suspension and not a lifetime ban because i was honest upfront.
5. I did NOT avoid a lifetime ban from supposedly being a rat on guildmembers. see above. And here is the petition itself for the people who continue to call me a liar.

6. It ultimately shed light on the issue and resulted in changes to the raid scene to prevent it from happening anymore. This was exactly what I was after. But yes I went about it in the wrong way. I accepted my punishment.
7. I stepped down as an Officer of Taken of my own choice. I was not removed, it was not "implied" that i should resign. They actually tried to talk me out of it. I did it because of the politics and insanity of the raid scene was stressing me out and making the game no longer fun. Anyone who raids in the high end, especially leadership, knows exactly what i mean.
Thats the facts. The trolls will continue to try and tarnish me but I want the people with working brains to know the truth. This is the last time I will ever speak on this. Let it go. Thanks.

Thats fine. You are the kind of troll im talking about so I don't need or care about your approval. This is for the people that are capable of critical thinking.

I bet you still think we were using autofire in TMO. Petitioning over why didn't my autofire work is pretty funny. Ty for the recap. Almost let that one go.

There's only so many diamond/jacinth combines to go around, lets not exaggerate.
I did a bunch but really "millions" didn't happen :p

To go a little further into a dead issue no one cares about, I believe at that time we were binding hotkeys to mouse wheel rolls. Only worked for particular mice, but it was absolutely manual input (unlike your "experiment") that performed similarly to autofire. Like it or not, TMO always excelled at pushing tactics to their furthest legal limits.
Also, I think we decided FTE came down to latency and physical proximity to the server. Which would explain why your autofire malfunctioned. An active player on a good connection could reliably beat an autofire bot pretty often which.. we were pretty sure was a good portion of Rampage / IB FTEs btw. Can't ever really tell, can you?
