View Full Version : Why do you raid?

I've been casually reading threads about the current endgame conundrum about raiding etc. Honestly, I have no idea why people put countless hours into raiding, I mean, I guess that's the point of reaching max level, but what are the main benefits of raiding?
Now I guess that's my overall point, why do you raid? Is it because of some unfinished business you never achieved years ago? Or maybe, is it the fact that uber gear is very satisfying? You have to understand, I started EQ back in 2003 and my max character level was a level 44 human paladin - walking around on my white horse casting dmg vs undead spells, believing I was the fist of justice and light. I was 13 years old, mind you.
Anyway, does the gear make your character that much better? The only benefit I could see of this is being able to solo more effectively, depending on your class. I guess I have to have a real reason to play endgame content that zealously. I mean I've never really experienced a real raid boss fight in EQ, but from the threads ive read it seems more stress than pleasures - which doesn't turn me away from it - nearly everything in life and in hardcore gaming comes at great sacrifice.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, after you've achieved best in slot gear? What then?

Make an alt and begin again.
It's at the point where people have numerous 60s and camp various characters out at a variety of "in window" targets. Makes the whole scene a bit of joke really.

I had an escape plan. A maxed classic / Kunark ranger is a pretty good soloist. I use her to kill green cons for my tailoring business.

Okay, now that seems something productive. I love professions, so farming gear for alts and tradeskills is something I can appreciate.

It is fun to travel around and help people do things they would normally not be able to do. Some classes benefit more than others from raid gear, but any raid geared character is going to bring a strong pillar to a normal group. Oh, and fashion.

This is a great reason. I would like to add to this that the progression through content and improving your character is extremely fun. Then going back and seeing how well your character actually grew in strength when you go back to the zone you came from; it's fun if you ask me.
More than anything, I really really enjoy the people I play this game with. There are always bad apples among a large group of people but there are those that you find a great connection with. After-all, we are community that is founded on a common ground of nerd love for an elf MMORPG.

the competition is fun; especially when you win.

I raided to hang with people, and get some pixels...Friends was first, gear was 2nd.
And I would always take time to help new people or train for a raid during off times. And even help other guilds raid. I kited fear for 4 hours for Europa i think? Just for the hell of it, i wanted nothing.

Dem pixels, yo! But seriously...
I do it for fun. The fun I get with hanging with friends I've known for months or years, the fun of playing a small part in achieving a much bigger goal, the fun of watching my friends (and my guild) succeed, and the fun of playing a game I love. But I'd be lying if I didn't say I love getting new pixels too, for making my char stronger, for pride and for fashion's sake.
But if you're doing it just for the pixels, you're gonna have a bad time.

Point to raiding? There is no point to EQ at all besides what you make of it. The “point” for most of us is that P99 is much harder and unforgiving than other games and as a consequence the “pay off” feeling you get when you finally complete your epic, or get your Vulak weapon, or whatever, is 100x greater than in other games because there are no short cuts to a lot of this stuff (Chardok being the exception *grumble*). Even with the content not being “difficult”, with limited loot drops even mediocre items hold a very high game value.
If you are looking to derive great meaning and satisfaction from EQ, please seek mental help...EQ for me is a way to unwind after work and I enjoy trekking the harsh land of Norrath where there are consequences to f#cking up can be great and time consuming (it makes not f#cking up that much more satisfying)

I've read that melee is top tier dps now, what changed that pushed melee above casters?

Very long fights. Wizards run out of mana, rogues never run out of pokey.

You raid so your force gets geared up so you can raid bigger targets.
You raid so you can raid so you can raid.
This was more true on live where you had to raid to be able to raid the better raid Before they release the next raid.
I try not to Think about it too much or I might go mad ;)

Where do SK's come into play with this? Have they become more useful with the new content?
Also have rangers become better?

Not really. Still useful as trash tanks but that's about as good as it gets. Warriors get all the glory in Velious imo.

SKs can tank some trash, rip mobs out of packs, things like that, which isn't any different from Kunark really. Warriors do all the real tanking due to discs.
Rangers at 60 with trueshot disc and a BFG can outparse a rogue as long as the fight is relatively short. That disc is unfair, and the BFG plays off the disc being that it's a weird archery/melee weapon. Weaponshield is also incredibly useful for things like tank switches and mob positioning. Rangers gained a lot of value.
