View Full Version : Is my account secure?

I just saw that my account name and characters names associated with it, as well as presumably the majority of the server population's information have been broadcast to the world.
What should I do to secure my account. Can I change the name?

Not the name, but you can change the password ^^

Looks like that list is a few months old. Bad news, your account name is compromised. Good news, go change your password.

Was it passwords as well? Was it a complete list?

It's just account names, but if you are the sort of person who uses simple passwords, you'll want to change them (and make them stronger).

26,000 account names + character on the account, no password.

Looks like the list was just compiled by parsing /who entries from the leaker's logs. I say this because there are duplicate entries with different levels listed, which indicates to me that it was likely a parse and not ripped from a database.
Doubt he has anyone's password, but it never hurts to be safe.
People know your account name now. If you were silly enough to use your real name or other RL information in your account name, that information is now public. If someone wants to log in to your account, they need both the user name and password and they only have half of it. Unless you were silly enough to reuse a password from your guild forums, or very simple/easy to guess one (the one vaguely realistic point of Hackers the movie - would your holiness care to change your password?), you should be OK.
That being said, this is a dick move by Greengrocer.

I don't think GMs will want that shared
but your name is one of the accounts if you were wondering

And this just contains account name and characters on the account? No other information posted? My password is strong and most of my characters are already in my sig.
This might suck for people who have tried to keep individual characters they play secret (i.e. Toons located in opposing guilds or old toons with bad reputations.

Cycling strong passwords won't help too much if one of the sociopaths on this server doesn't like something you do, and decides to write a script to crack your password for revenge.

That's a good point, as there are currently (to my knowledge) no limitations on login attempts in a time frame, leaving us vulnerable to brute force scripts. Maybe our wonderful devs want to add one, as a preventative measure? Dealing with scores of hacked accounts will be a much bigger headache in the long run...

That would definitely help if there was a limit try or whatever for the day. Or like the classic EQ use to warn "your account has been unsuccessfully logged in x amount of times today message"
But p99 staff seem more worried about creating a new class R otation system and implementing and enforcing more rules .
or allowing guild B to sit in "traffic" to get guild A suspended. (see raid discussion)
I don't see anything happening anytime soon with this account leak info.
We can hope some common sense gets injected and they don't go bat shit crazy with rules , but so far it is not looking that way. and if these new rules get out of control you can expect the staff to be occupied the rest of the year with petition wars.
* (non raiders) say :
* more rules = less work for staff.*
* (reality and past experience Proves opposite) :
* more rules = more work for staff.*
^should fall under common sense too.^

Just so everyone knows, this is old news. This was released almost 2 months or more ago. Don't let it bug you. If someone wants to hack your account it's going to happen with or without this list.

Probably not related, but the client uses absurdly weak encryption when sending credentials to the login server (specifically, plain old DES with a static IV and key of ALL ZEROES).
If anyone is in a position to monitor your network traffic when you log in, they could have your account name and password within milliseconds. Not that there's p99-targetting spyware out there (why bother) but... security on EQ is really not worth getting worked up about.

To stop meltdown, make a new account for each character.... and if one gets compromised you haven't lost "everything".
Aside from whatever issue are betwixt GG and staff, is effing with the players really helping his crusade?
Or am I giving his maturity too much credit?

Some of the "stories" I heard over the years playing Eve Online:
- During a fan fest presentation, a very drunk Mittani - leader of Goonswarm who preached their purpose was to ruin your game, asked his listeners to push a ~broken~ person towards suicide. He later apologized for the event and was removed from leader of the CSM (a group of elected players that directly interact with CCP developers).
- Corporations build such hatred towards other corporations that horror stories of people getting their cable and telephone lines cut just to curtail players logging into the game.
- Both CCP and players have had DOS attacks that crashed the game or servers.
And for the most part, this is considered "normal".

.... Omg... Someone knows my email address. Is my email safe?
Guys. Relax. Account names means little to nothing.
If you are worried, change your password.
That's all. Move on.

While fan fests and other gatherings have always been portrayed as players getting together to drink and to laugh it up, I am not sure if anyone got maced. Though there was the talk that a few rowdy players had to be pulled apart, but then drinking will do that towards people.
A few years ago, the country of Iceland received as a gift or CCP took part with it - I forgot the details at the moment (old age) some monument near their shores. CCP had each and every pilot's (character's) name etched onto plates as part of the design. A group of players despised this one particular player so much that they found this person's name and vandalized the monument by scratching that name off! The whole became a legal issue with criminal charges; but again, another example of players going to the extreme.
While a bit off-topic, when I first came to Project 1999 and was reading the forums, the Rant and Flames section I found quite calm and peaceful since I've read worse on the General Forums with Eve Online.

I'm not talking about OC spray. I'm talking about an actual medieval mace.
