Hey everybody, I've been digging around on the forums and site for the last several days trying to get a feel for what's going on here. A friend told me about this and I'm pretty interested.

Since I'm introducing myself, I played EQ for several years (Classic to Omens) until RL caught up to me. I played some MMO's after that but nothing more than a year maybe two. Absolutely nothing has compared to EQ so I'd like to play on an emulator server and check it out.

I do have some questions though. I read somewhere that this server averages about 500 players on at once. Is that right?

I've read so much stuff over the last few days some of it is blurring together. Does this server have an exp bonus?

Something I read described this server as a "Progression" server. Is that accurate? How far has it progressed? What triggers the proggession? A mob kill? Time?

What about custom files? Any at all?

How about downtime? Is it often? Scheduled?

I did do some searching but really couldn't find anything about that stuff above so I apologize if it's been asked a bunch but I'm kind of tired of searching around for those answers and I'm at work so time is limited at the moment.

No regular xp bonus.

It's a Classic server that will open Kunark shortly and Velious eventually. It's triggered by when the developers have them ready to be released.

There are some custom UI files to make it appear more classic (though it doesn't use the original UI)

Downtime is sporadic and usually brief. If it's not an emergency issue they're usually announced.

You say Velious eventually. Will it stop there?

Although Kunark was always my favorite expansion I did have a lot of fun progessing through the planes.

From the FAQ :

"How do you keep the server running?
Well it takes a lot of bandwidth to keep 800+ people online at the same time almost 24 hours a day, something to the tune of several hundred dollars a month. Please donate if you enjoy the server, the link is on the front page of project1999.org"

Taken from the eqemu site, the numbers are for online at any given time = Average Players: 490
Max Players: 982

"What are the experience penalties/bonuses?
By Race:
Troll -20%
Iksar -20%
Ogre -15%
Barbarian -5%
Halfling +5%

By Class:
Paladin / Shadowknight / Ranger / Bard -40%
Monk -20%
Wizard / Magician / Enchanter / Necromancer -10%
Rogue +9%
Warrior +10%

Exp penalties are multiplied not added, so a troll sk would be (1.4 x 1.2 = 1.68 or 68% penalty). Until a recent patch the racial exp mods were slightly off. Ogres were getting the halfling bonus instead of a penalty, .etc. Full details are available here.

Are there exp bonuses for certain dungeons?
Yes. SolA used to be the only dungeon with a bonus until November 15th patch, at which point SolA bonus remained the same, but a ton of other dungeons got boosted. To see the official GM response, click here. To see a list of zones and their exp modifiers, click here. Disclaimer: that list is a "best guess" based on the values found on the PEQ server."

Progression of The server (although kunark is already way behind I believe, not much can be done about that ) = http://www.project1999.org/forums/showpost.php?p=5491&postcount=12

"Are there any additional files / UIs / EQ Client customizations I should know about?
Yes! All of these are optional and are not necessary to play Project 1999, but you may find them useful.
Velious 'Oldschool' UI
Transparent Visors (Human/Half Elf plate helm fix)
EQLite (a smaller Titanium Client)
EQ Emu Patcher (useful for playing on multiple Emu servers)" ( links, go look at them )

There is downtime from time to time, sometimes it is told to us in advance, sometimes it isn't, but in all of my time playing here, there is really hardly any downtime, def not scheduled. Hope this helped

Yeah, the plan is just to go up through Velious.

Just want to note: unlocking of additional content (Kunark, The Hole, The Warrens, Stonebrunt, Velious, etc.) is based on both the original timeline on which Verant/Sony released them AND when the content is complete and ready to be released. Kunark, for example, is currently behind-schedule compared to the when it originally went live, but isn't ready yet, and the devs aren't going to put it out there broken (this isn't exactly classic, but we'll live :P ).

So essentially, content is based on: timeline / when it's ready, whichever comes LAST.

Oh so it is Mob kills that trigger the progession?

I'm not sure how I missed the FAQ...sorry about that.

Chanus

No, timeline.

Like, Kunark was released thirteen months after launch, and that was when it would have been released here: thirteen months after the server opened (but it's behind schedule a bit because... well, because these guys don't get paid to work on their hobby so we're grateful for what we get).

From the link posted:

To Unlock Kunark:
-Lord Nagafen
-Lady Vox
-Phinigel Autropos
-Cazic Thule
-Innoruuk
-Noble Dojorn

To unlock Velious:
-Hoshkar
-Venril Sathir
-Talendor
-Gorenaire
-Severilous

I don't remember that in live but I guess it has been a very long time.

My understanding is the timeline supercedes the mobs being killed if the mobs are killed before the timeline is up.

It's kind of a moot point because there's no way it would take a year for any of those mobs to be killed on this server and it probably will take a year for Velious to be ready to be released... and obviously it can't be released until it's ready :P

Kunark is in Beta right now and should be released soon.

armlocks101
12-10-2010, 04:56 PM
Oh ok. Well then yeah...it is a moot point.

Yeah, i was just trying to, logic through it,(confused myself for a sec about the progression servers: ) I think they wanted that stuff dead before an expansion was opened, but as on p1999, I think it was all killed way before kunark was released.

As I've spoke with past players in the last week or so it seems I'm a minority in enjoying progressing through the planes. Strange because I had a ton of fun doing that.

I admit the EQ live progression server has peaked my interest, but the question I have was would the old zones still be untouched? IE EC, Freeport etc? and I'd probably have to spend a week figuring out the the stupid UI

Bukujuju

For me the biggest reason to play EMU classic servers or a progression server is the community. I was never a player that needed to have the best gear, It was about meeting new people that wanted to have fun. I quit Live because it was no longer fun it was a job. If I didnt slow a mob in x sec's some 18 year old kid that has never seen a set of real boobies other then on the internet would scream at me etc.

pop books made starting cities obsolete, traveling was a joke, pvp was ruined....

Well it did indeed make starting cities obsolete and traveling was made incredibly easier (still not as easy as a lot of other MMO's though). I'm not sure about the pvp though.

But still, I had fun playing on the planes.

PvP was always terrible in EQ. It's totally unbalanced.

The current UI is not a lot different from the one we have here. The previous incarnation of a Progression server had the revamped zones and I imagine this one would as well.

And those people are on this server, too. They're everywhere.

it started to get totally unbalanced with pop. there was no zonecontrol anymore on sullon zek thanks to the freakin books. resists went skyhigh with planar stuff. casters had a realy hard time to land spells on others...

it was kind of unbalanced in classic but the thrill in pvp was gone with pop

The problem with EQ PvP (and with most MMOs that are primarily PvE games) is that the game just isn't designed for it and so there are only so many things you can do to make it work.

armlocks101
12-10-2010, 05:32 PM
Hey Mitic....do you guys have kangaroos? lol j/k

Seriously, what you say is true. But I always thought pvp was really weak. I played on a pvp server for about a year and a half and had fun but it was team pvp. Still, pve was always my favorite in EQ. And the books aside, I thought PoP was fun. But the books did take a lot of fun out of the whole aspect of the game.

So I guess my view is...planes were awesome but the books were pretty crappy.

guess thats the reason why i sticked to eq pvp since perfectly balanced pvp mmos became boring real fast for me

i havent played mmo`s any longer than a month (except vanguard) with pvp involved.

The thing that worked with pvp in eq is that it was something to do when you were tired of camping crap. If you spent too long lfg, you could always go pk someone (or be pkd). That's what I liked the most about it.

Ahhh gotcha, ya I played on this server fairly hardcore for about 6months, which with the current content seemed like a good bit. Kunark will be fun, we can level up again! Nerco/Shaman combo be sick, or hell we could do well with shaman/ranger combo even ha:)
