View Full Version : After my rogue hits 60 (alt suggestions)
So my main is 59 and a few yellows from 60. I have been contemplating an alt to get into once I ding and wanted some input.
First of all I'll probably app rogue to a raiding guild once I ding. So I'll still mostly be focusing on my main but when I'm not doing that I wanted to create my first real alt. I'm not sure what class though. I want it to be a different role than rogue so I can mix up play styles. Some classes im considering;
Iksar Shadow Knight - I'd be able to tank which is different from rogue but with CoS and FD the mobility of the class would still be good (something I've grown to like playing rogue ) plus I get greenmist quest available to me. The con I see is that iksar and sk spells don't really thrill me. Outside of being a tank with the ability to get around the class kinda seems bland to me.
Gnome or Human Magician - The role of this class is kinda similar to rogue in that its a dps class but it's not melee and some of the utility looks fun. I also love pet classes but am burnt out on enchanter (played one on live for years) plus the magician epic quest looks fun. I'm just worried I may get bored with the class but its solo ability looks good for an alt class. They also don't seem as popular as some of the other robed classes and that has slight appeal. No root spell is a huge down to me though.
The main thing is I want the new alt to be different enough from my main but still be enjoyable to play solo if I need. Am I missing a class that could fit the profile? Any suggestions are welcome.

I had a a similar dilemma as you when my Monk hit 60. I ended up making a Bard and then a Necro...I still have all 3 characters...Bard is 52 and Necro is 48
Bards are actually great tanks as long as you are fighting level appropriate stuff - I ended up tanking more often than not, after 50 tanking starts to become more difficult.
Necro is also really fun. I feel like Necros get looked over as a great DPS class on P99 for some reason. Plus they have some great utility in twitching mana and healing (can dispell yourself of recourse for essential free heal spells)
I would recommend either Bard or Necro, I am glad that I have both...
if you have a sh!t load of money and can afford to uber twink a monk...that would be a ton of fun to have all the great stuff right off the bat (COF/Fungi/Tstaff)

As a 60 rogue main, I went with an enchanter as my alt. I liked the soloing/different grouping mechanics that an enchanter offered in lieu of rogue.
Plus enchanters are pretty not fun to play on raids and can become quickly redundant. This way I have a toon that can be parked at a target and still have a super fun and capable character to play in the meantime.

Once your Rogue is 60, if there's nothing going on you're going to want to hop on an alt and be able to solo. For that reason I strongly suggest Shaman, Druid, or any of the int casters and losing the SK idea.

If I made sk I'd have fungi so I imagined I'd be able to solo up to 50 at least.

You don't need root if you're on blue, you can insta click it from cheep rechargeable nets.
I'd make that Mage a DE tho cus looks.
But on that note try red... You can Afk camp stuff with audio triggers while you raid on blue ;)

Right, but once you reach that level now you just have two characters that can't really farm anything solo and generally have to rely on groups in order to play EQ.

Do you enjoy pain? If so, roll a wizard. :P
SK: I think you might be underestimating the SK toolkit a bit. For example, I'm quite sure SKs could solo Sebilis at 58+. You can split with Darkness/FD, throw a few dots to help your DPS, and fear kite (even in a dungeon) the last 50% or so. I'm not saying it would be fast, but it would work until you find a group. Failing that, you could always do KC. Vonhammer has leveled about 12 hybrids there solo.
Mage: get a 10 slot bag of root nets. It helps a LOT.
Neither of those choices are super power classes, but they are both plenty effective solo or grouped. If you want absolute max freedom to solo and farm, roll shaman or enchanter.

58-60 as a solo SK? That sounds like a great way to spend a couple of years.
Ever hear about paladins soloing in HS? No, me either :p

if you want something to do outside of raids, roll a class that can solo and farm. magician necro shaman etc.
if you want to poopsock raid and gear 2 characters roll an SK and main it, but raid on the rogue. it'll get geared anyways because its a raiding rogue.

I love my SK. You can always solo farm seafuries, and being able to farm seafuries is kind of like being able to farm anything. Money is fungible. They're pretty good xp in the low to mid 50s, too. The tank shortage means I can get groups basically wherever I would like (sometimes even in barely occupied zones, since groups coalesce around tanks), but being able to fear kite means I can solo if I want to as well.
I have a low level magician alt but I see them all the time on seafury island and I'm sure they can farm them a lot better than my SK can at a similar level. If you accept the fact that you need your pet by your side in any partway dangerous area, or at the very least need to be invis at all times if you're not, the lack of root isn't quite as bad as it seems at first glance. You do get invis at 4, which is helpful for your general survival.
Both classes can solo or group interchangeably and are good in either role.
However it doesn't sound like you're particularly excited by either. Maybe a shaman? Shamans have a very different playstyle than rogues, and can do almost anything. They are expensive at the top end, but can farm amazingly well. And no group will turn down a shaman if they don't already have one. They might suit you.

You have a melee and a grouping class, so your alt should be a caster and a solo class. Mage, Necro, Shaman, Enchanter are good choices. But if I were you I would strongly consider a Druid. Very handy alt to have on hand for ports, tracking and PLing friends. And if you start playing the Druid and decide you aren't really into it for the long haul, you still have a very functional and useful alt to port with if you just level to 34 or 44 (Vel ports).
Thank you for all the suggestions, and keep them coming I appreciate it! I don't think shaman is a class for me. I have a lvl 46 shaman that I stripped and don't play anymore because I didn't enjoy it.

That's fair. Necromancer was suggested and might be more your speed. They can do an awful lot both solo and in groups. Druids might work too. Both have very different playstyles from rogues and are good farmers. And as someone else pointed out, druids are great money makers even if you burn out on the journey to 60 because of the porting angle.

I really enjoyed playing my druid alt when I couldnt find a group on my rogue. Was a perfect pure group / pure solo mix. Then I soloed a heavily twinked ranger 1-60 just before Velious which let me play druid and rogue at the same time. Definitely my favorite character.. Soloist. Paper tank. Puller. DPS. CC. Tracker.
I just highly suggest making a character with solid soloing capabilities. Rogues at 60 are boring if you arent raiding constantly. Breaks my heart to say because I love the class, but no AAs kill this server.

I noticed that you like the underdogs. My suggestion is paladin! You can tank, soothe pull, root cc. A good paladin has a lot of ways to save a group and be the hero. I know i like my pally alt.
You want something totally different from your DPS class? Pally is it, definately not a DPS class but highly wanted in groups, for good reason.

Paladins are great tanks and can duo pretty much with anyone that has a slow or snare. Fear kiting with a druid, necro or ranger is very nice xp.
If you want a slow-paced AFK-rewarding experience, roll a wizard with a Solists Icy Wand, a bind in the EC tunnel and plenty of +mana gear to further prolong the reward of AFKING after nuking down some shit. Be sure to put your starting stats into STR and go human for maximizing your ShekelQuest potential.
roll an Ogre Shaman and ull prolly end up deleting your Rogue

I could definitely solo HS on either a SK or Paladin. Especially this SK (http://wiki.project1999.com/Magelo_Blue:Malthusian). Anyway, I think you are missing the point. EQ is a multiplayer game; soloing to 60 ASAP is not the goal, especially once you have one L60 toon and can partake freely of our glorious raid scene.
The point is that as a Rogue you log in, type LFG, hang around for 5 minutes, and log out/go afk hidden. As an SK you log in, type LFG, start randomly soloing a few mobs, and form one of those 'not-exactly-fast-but-pretty-fun-random-groups' like say SK/Druid/Mage.

Pyrocat such a twink whore.
I have a blast doing these types of groups on my SK, Raev!

Roll a SK so you can waste your time leveling up the worst class for the current expansion.
