I think it's moreso how whatever is being built will affect the surrounding area/environment and using those skills to plan the structure/park/etc to have less of an adverse affect. I know of one issue where paved roads that are too wide cause alot of problems with heavy rains... in the sewers and also above ground. It's like the wider the road, the more water that is being sent to the storm drains. That excess of water is essentially flooding the treatment plants when heavy rains occur. I know this is/was an issue in our area a handful of years ago.

I'm sure Tralina could tell you much better than I, though. I'm just a fan of pro enviro development!

Well, your degree will be worthless, but the experience is priceless.

Unfortunately these days, anyone with a pulse can complete a bachelor's degree. I've got 2 of them, neither have done anything to contribute to my career other than good life skills like time/priority management.

Finish your degree with the hopes of getting a MD/PhD. It's certainly not a bad thing to get your BS, but don't expect companies to drop their panties over you. That's not a reason to do it.

What are your degrees in? I think degrees that are a little more specific like mine are useful to some extent!

I'll definitely do a masters program once I'm done with this one. There's a few PhD programs out there for this, but I dunno how interested I am in that.

The problem is the real world and school world are two very different things.

Employers look at degrees as "Ok, he/she can complete a task," not "Ok, he/she learned a lot about this stuff."

MS/PhD is different, but soon enough, that will be more of the same.

Congratulations. Try to get involved in as many real world projects as you can through your school. A degree shows human resources at most companies that you are willing to stick with something, but real world experience always trumps it. Just don't do what I did and spend 8 years in school, only to work in a completely unrelated field. Always back a degree with passion and realism, or you're throwing away money.

I think this is more like a Masters/PhD type program or possibly just an upper level type of program (Much like the medical technology or nursing programs at universities)

ahh. My friend Myron has an undergrad degree in just straight biology I believe but he has worked with habitat for humanity and now - he is in NOLA working for an environmental re-building type company (I can NOT think of the word for the life of me. basically they are rebuilding New Orleans "Green" - he's had several magazine articles written about him adn he's doing really great :) I am so happy for him :)

My bachelors is in general biology = Not helpful!
think i'm going to get my masters in Wildlife and Fisheries Management. That, at least, is specific enough that it's easy to get a job. Easier.

My experience with Bachelor degrees has been from both a job seeker: it lets you tick a box on an application you couldn't otherwise, and from a perspective employer: it tells me you can be trained.

In both cases, it was easy to group degrees (fairly or not): BA (you can probably write, but you might not have the tools to back up what you're saying), BS (you can probably do math, but you might not have the tools to articulate what you're doing) and pre-professionals are very goal oriented.

Graduate level degrees are different, and lead themselves to more general stereotypes (again, unfairly or not) - liberal and social and soft sciences tend to be polarizing voices, hard sciences tend to be uncompromising and engineers tend towards the pragmatic.

College taught social skills, and to a very limited extent, a hint of knowledge useful for your future. College professors really really really really want to impress upon you how relevant they are, when the reality is, that they aren't.

Once you get out of school, and get a job, that's when you will learn how to do your job. With any luck the school will not have taught you totally incorrect information and/or procedures.

Grats on making it through the application process. And remember, one glass of water for every other glass of mixed drink/beer/shot.

It will be worth whatever you put into it. If you can graduate with Honors, then rock it. At a recent department meeting we talked about how those who complete Honors have greater success with the Masters. Some faculties recommend this step for moving into the Masters program, and other more stringent ones even require it.

I personally find Masters useless unless you are moving on to PhD. Its unfortunate that after all that money and time, you dont even get to be called "Master."

Either way, good luck and stock up on the KD!
