The Hole.
Long and/or costly corpse runs
Enemies everywhere
Removal of the safety net of a point of no return without an evac and the feeling of a required druid or wizard when druids cant heal as well as clerics or nuke as well as wizards and wizards needing to sit on their butt 90% of the time
One runner/too many snare resists can be the end of it all

LGuk. Fears of being trained, an almost claustrophobic feeling of being underground, always had a feel of impending danger for me. It's funny because on my enchanter and bard I feel like being in HS is a playground, but to this day those creepy ass frogs have me on edge.

Swamp of no hope and Dagnar's Cauldron are a real close tie here... useless zones.
Did lvl 20+ aggro mobs path through the newb area outside cab on live or is that just an EMU pathing thing? been 16 years so I don't really remember, but seem to recall killing lots of stuff in that zone when I was sub 20 on live, and don't remember getting gang raped every time I pulled.

The hole is an awesome test of dungeon crawl ability as a chanter though. I lulled and finesse my way solo all the way down to the mushroom house for my chanter epic turn in mob. I almost made it but a named elemental came around the corner from the docks area and resisted my lull. The whole crawl was harrowing and alot of fun. I had to charm mobs to take out rock golems (sometimes sacrificing my pet and charming a second to find is the job).

Love that zone, might be my favorite. It seperates the men from the boys. But then again, I always had a alt magician parked in DC to resummon stones for corpse runs. There is not one single zone with better experience. Unless an admin of the server can prove otherwise.
My vote for worst zone is a tie between Najena and Befallen. For how difficult they are, they need much better drops and experience modifier. Way too high of a challenge for very little in return. When you are level appropriate and die deep in those dungeons, you pretty much have to rely on a high level person to extract you or another group. You can't invis to your corpse cause of the mix of undead and live. You also might be screwed with your corpse behind a locked door with the keys on your corpse. Love the zones for their risk however, just need much much more reward.

Timorous Deep.
I remember goofing off on the boat from Butcherblock to Freeport back in 2001, and fell right into the ocean. I literally did not know what to do, so I aimed my camera upwards to stay afloat, put a weight on my W key, and went to bed.
I woke up dead. It's been all business on boats ever since.

2nd runner up: dagnors cauldron, super uselessAnd that's why I listed it as my pick. It's just a really useless zone, a waste of real-estate. It's alwasy been just rare to actually find anyone in there camping even in classic live, and most are just trying to get to Unrest. I just don't like useless zones, above all. Even Nektulos Forest is more valuable (for tailors and guard killers anyway) a zone than DC. I think most places initialed DC are useless these days :D ..but I digress hehe.

I really dislike WW, I have about a 50% success rate getting where I'm trying to go without dying/gating. A close runner up is Sol A. Confusing, full of trains, some casters thrown in to annoy you, and that lava which can leave you in a bad way.
Also special shout out to Sirens Grotto with a criminally brutal zoneline. Move even one inch and you die, and if you die and need a rez you have to stand there for a minute before you can move during which time someone is liable to train you again.

SolA is awesome. Probably my favourite zone to xp in at the appropriate level.
My least favourite zone has to be Dagnor's - no real reason to go there.

Sol A was probably my favorite dungeon so far for my first playthrough to 60. Mob density is manageable, safe spots to engage are plentiful if you know where they are and are a good race, easy to zone to Sol B in an emergency with multiple lines, can easily carry you a dozen levels or more with ports and vendors right outside.... I loved Sol A.

MOst of the hatred to Kunark outside zones in these post can be attributed to the problem with pathing Emu have with them. Pathing in perty much any Kunark outdoor zones is severly broke on project 1999 and all the emu's.
It is not an easy fix so most of us who know this just live with it and dont or sparingly use those zones.
In most of the kunark outdoor zones during live mobs had certian pathing areas with many safe spots to set up camps and or kite safely. Here on p1999 they wander willy nilly all over the place.

Kunark forests zones. Seriously thick branches all the way to the ground. Can't see shit in any of them.
Dangors. Serves no purpose other than to make unrest corpse runs more difficult.
That EK ramp to highpass.
Beholders maze. Seemed like it could have been cool had then done ANYTHING with it.
Lesser Fay. Serves same purpose as dangors, except you're trying to get to mistmoore.
Sirens. Eat shit when you move an inch when you zone in. Eat dragons, I mean watery servants everywhere.
Kithkor, get a rogue epic, do nothing else here.
VP. Overrated gimmicky shit. Consists of nothing but melee weapons and any loot everyone else wants on Phar dar.

Lesser Fay. Serves same purpose as dangors, except you're trying to get to mistmoore.awww that's a decent zone, well if you are a ranger or druid mostly. But usually at least one camp in there every evening, bandits are pretty good. Some good loot and quest items (eg tunare symbol). An under-appreciated zone. Quite a bit in there.

Lake Rathetear. A huge zone with nothing to do. Which is a shame because it's in a good location. You might see one level 19ish there soloing an aviak but other than that it's always empty.
But my least faxorite zone is kunark.

Kithicor Forest. The fact that it's either low level or mid/high level depending on the time of day makes it useless imo. Sketchy run to RV/Highpass when low level, and it always seems to be night when I am passing through.

Hmm... Lots of useless zones. Many of them are so unmentionable they just aren't mentioned for the most part.
Erud's Crossing... Kerra Isle... Lavastorm... Lake Rathetear... Dagnor's Cauldron which would have been more awesome if it had a sea dragon...
I kind of like Warsliks Woods and Burning Woods due to the FG forts. However, trying to kite there was monstrous... Lack of safe spots. :/
I always felt Skyfire was a fairly useless zone. Beautiful, but useless.
Plane of Growth is beautiful, but they made it pretty unplayable with the PoGs. :/
I still vote Nektulous Forest as worst newbie zone. That place is so easy to get lost... Worse than Tox.

There was a GM event back in the day for Arena. For 2pp X your level entry fee, you got into a free for all with every other entrant. GM name was Nyx. That was pretty exciting. Dunno what the reward was.

Least favorite zone(s)? Low visibility, huge, spread out monstrosities where risk > reward and you only spent time there while traversing to other zones.
Swamp of no Hope
Burning Woods
Emerald Jungle
I might lump the Karanas in here as well but I'll be honest that the entire pre-kunark world was fantastic in that it just made the world/game feel BIG and not just designed around being in a certain zone because you were a certain level range. True classic EQ (not kunark) could host a wide range of player levels in most zones.

Coming out of lurking to post on this BS comment and the ones above (and possibly below if they agree).
Gorge was awesome. I'm probably talking from nostalgia, but I always had an awesome time in the gorge. I remember being there on my first character, a druid, and camping those evil eyes while sporting an e-boner waiting for a PBB to drop. The exp was adequate. The mobs...when do you see an evil eye at lvl 19? When do you see a crazy mud man? The first time I had mud slung on my face and couldn't see I thought my monitor died. It was an amazing feeling. The zone is gold. As long as you have sow there is always a zone line somewhere near you and you can escape to safety. Just have a map open. It was hell in the days before playing in windowed mode.
As far as my vote, I would have to say South Karana. I had a love hate relationship. The xp was great at aviaks. The distance you had to travel to do anything was grueling. I did love the random named spawns though.
Edit: Also voting Dalnir. The casters and flee are terrible.

to be fair I understand why none likes the karanas becuse those zones are entirely for RP
and I used to hate solb, until I learned how to solo giants and duo rage fire.. its like this awesome zone that ranges from level 35-grouping to level 60 endgame!
you can level from 35-60 without even leaving solb once!

The plains are full of things to do. In South Karana you have the Aviak town, the Gnolls around Splitpaw, Quillmane, and all the space in the world for folks to kite to their heart's content in relative safety. East Karana features Evil Eyes, Gnolls and Undead Reavers, and spiders that drop loads of modestly valuable spider silk. In North Karana you have good mid-teens willowisp hunting for that side of the continent, as well as beetles. In more middle levels you graduate to Griffons. Even in West there are the various bandit camps, the Ogre camp, scarecrows, and undead. Three of the four zones have Hill Giants for folks who like hunting those, three of the four have guards available, and all four have merchants to sell to. I like that region just fine. However, this is P1999 and some people hate it because they can make a couple per cent more experience per hour somewhere else.
-------------------------------------------
As for zones I dislike, I particularly dislike Plane of Sky. It's barren and ugly. It's full of irritating quests, irritating monsters, and irritating mechanics (hello, losing keys if you zone out).

Dagnor's, easily.
I'm pretty sure it's a lot more brutal here than it was back in the day. I don't remember ever seeing the Fab 4 overrun by mobs on Live; on P99 I have tried to train Tidal Lords or Dwigus to them on multiple occasions, only to find they are already dead.

but yes there are some good loots (WK ogres, Paw, Jeweled Skull quest + all the shit that comes out of NK for mid teens-twenties+ EK spiders)
