Hi everyone. I am starting fresh with Project 99 and was just wanting to get into the community. I started playing EQ originally in early 2000. Started as a Wood elf Ranger but quickly changed to an Ogre warrior as that is what my friends needed. I eventually adapted to a Dwarf Cleric after they all quit when Wow came out. Anyways, it's been a REALLY long time since i played this version of EQ let alone solo.
I guess what I'm looking for are some suggestions on what race/class combo would get me going quick.Any tips and tricks would help greatly!
Thanks in advance,

Welcome to p99 bud; I think the fun will pick up right where you left off before! As for race/class questions - an interesting thread is active right now that may address some of your concerns > http://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229258
Starting a race with access to EC might be an option to get going quick, FoB and Gfay are both very active. Check out the guides in the wiki too!

Enchanter is my fav class. They can Solo extremely well and are also highly desired in groups. They don't need gear and if you remember that you don't NEED all of your spells they are a super cheap class. Pick any race as long as you pick agnostic.
Don't let anyone insult you by telling you that they are too hard to play.

Hail! I'm in the same boat you are. I rolled a barbarian shaman and am having success. If I had any tips to share from being an old-new player myself, it would be to remember what game you're playing. EQ rewards patience and strategy right out of the gate. Don't take unnecessary risks unless you're willing to pay the price. Find yourself a humanoid with a cracked staff and grind away!

All is subjective but IMO their probably the easiest class to play, ask any charm soloing druid how nice it would be to have mez, aoe mez, and mem blur.
Unless things have changed the mem blur component in the lv4 mez is OP as hell, being able to reset a fight without zoning, camping, or using feign death is God mode.

Remember, you can have more than one character.
Experiment. Try on a few different characters for size until you find the one that fits.
Make a DE Enchanter. A halfling Druid. An Iksar Necro. An Ogre Shadow Knight. A mage. A wizard, A rogue.
It's a GAME. Have fun. Don't play what you think other people need. Play what you ehjoy.

You want hardcore? Play a gnomish warrior. Bonus for cuteness.

So i started with a Barbarian Rogue but was not having success. Everything out the gate was yellow and i could not kill anything. I then made a Gnome wizzard but im not much of a caster type so i lost interest. I am currently using a Half-Elf Warrior which im doing okay with. Started in Freeport. Thinking about going with an Erudite SK next to see if i like that.
Are any of the oldschool armor quests still around? the ones where you have to bring your class master a list of things to get a certain piece of armor. If i remember right, as an Ogre Warrior i had to bring 2 fire betel eyes, 4 pieces of bronze (i think) and a beetle carapass to get the chestpiece.

Everything I tell you to do in this post, can be done by a good or EVIL enchanter! one of EQ's COOLEst and arguablly most powerful/best class.

If you really want to invest in 1 character and make constant progress and really learn the most insane shit you can do with Everquest (that you never thought possible in the past, or always wondered if they were) Enchanter is the BEST class to teach you.
It can be easy mode EQ, but if you do it right it is the ultimate hard mode everquesting you will ever do.

Unfortunately these quests were post-Luclin and will never be on p99.

Dang. Oh well. So im level 2 Half-Elf in freeport. Leveling is slow to say the least but making money is not bad. how do i go about getting a few backpacks in this area? Does Allakazham (sp) still work even for such old-school content?

Allakhazam isn't broke but also isn't classic. The mirrors for classic resources on the library forum here in p1999 have served me great so far. You're in a pretty prime area for groups once you bust out of your newbie spot. I would suggest targeting humanoid mobs, even green ones because they will drop bags and boxes until you can afford a set of backpacks.

So after playing my warrior i have found that even with the 10% bonus experience it is still a pain in the a$$ to level. I think im going to change it up and try a monk. I don't feel as though the 10% bonus exp is makin up for the time it takes to kill a mob sometimes.

Melee toons are tough first characters on p99. Monk might not be so bad.

If you are doing monk to iksar. You won't regret it. The extra a.c. and the regen is nice. Plus why would you play a human in a role playing game?

Some people are scared of being hated every where :)

Naaa, I don't mind being hated everywhere. That just gives me more of a reason to slaughter certain mobs to get faction to be able to enter other areas lol

Nice. Also fd gets so powerful that faction won't even matter.

Nothing is easy, this is why EQ1 is so damn good. Just play something you like to play, because then the trip seems to go faster from that perspective even if it's kinda slower.
Like in the case for you first char on live, the ranger. Rangers have good gear to pursue for questing, and as well is cheaper than most class gear to buy at EC. You gotta look at the class, how it's function, what you want to do about gearing, and what you mostly want to do in end-game.
And the experience changes as you level the classes. Early on, they are more so humongous. You should know that though. imo all the melees are good for levleing, so you should be fine with whichever one. Just keep in mind your end-game goals when choosing.

So just an update. I tried the monk and got him to level 6. started dozing off every time i tried to play him so i made a cleric. Cleric got me in groups quick but i found i was just not effective with the way groups pull now a days so i lost spots after about 30 to 45 min. I went back to my rogue and had some gear given to me (didn't beg for it. Was a run by here you go thing) and my rogue is not level 8. I am rather enjoying my rogue so i believe i will stay with him. Now if i could just find groups haha! Solo as a rogue (in befallen) is complicated and sometimes a little rough but I make the best of it! Also, if anyone wants to farm some Ravenscale for me i would be willing to pay over time and would be much appreciate

It's not playing the cleric that is the problem, just some of the PUGs are really really bad here. Like... trying to play EQ like WoW because that's all they know, bad. So when other players play in dumb mode, clerics feel the pain. If you want to heal early in the game, go with drui. Otherwise your cleric really needs some fair gear. Shammy is a good start for that too, more forgiving in groups, though a little more gear dependence compared to drui.
Sure, rogue is popular, and a class in the upper lists for raiding. Horrible for solo, ah but soloing can be over rated.

I think the OP did not get the cleric to 8 when meditate comes. The levels before 8 are the hardest and you can not really fill the role of main healer in a group. A good group should know that. Below 8 if there are groups at all, its more like everybody fighting for themselves with a little bit of specialization and some bandages.

I find it a bit hard to solo as a cleric to start. I think I got him to level 6 but every time I went to orc hill in gfay I would get kicked after about 30 to 45 min because they would pull the entire camp (8 mobs) and I could not heal through that. Got kicked from groups about 4 or 5 times and just got frustrated and went to my rogue. I don't blame the cleric class, I just hate being frustrated because I get blamed for someone else's stupidity ya know. Anyways, the cleric is not gone but I'm just enjoying the rogue now so that's what I'm ganna play for now
