Glad I didn't miss Vanguard. But nothing will ever compare to the PvP or class design, so everything sucks in comparison since then.

Vanguard may have ruined the entire American fantasy MMORPG industry to be honest. It is what happens when you put a brilliant game designer with no business sense whatsoever in charge. All we've really got since then are small studio releases and Korean ports.
Beta was a fucking joke - "from scratch" redesigns of entire classes, revamps of huge parts of the game over and over...that game would have never left the beta phase. Microsoft came in and pushed a broken product out the door.
Such a shame too, Vanguard had such incredible potential and may well have been the best game ever created within the genre if there had been focused and talented management within Sigil.

Vanguard emu?
A sys admin at SOE/Daybreak would need to steal the source to make it more then just a pet project. Spells barely functional atm.
You can walk around all over, autoattack, look at all the gear in the auction house and buy all the stuff for nostalgia. Its like virtual blueballs. Cool for a night of nostalgic feels with dat sound track.
People who's attention deficit got the best of them, or people who didn't have the rig to play at launch who bash Vanguard have no idea what they missed.
The 100 man <Ebonlore> zerg getting their collective asses kicked all over the place, culminating with the leader and his entire officership getting banned and /guilddeleted was the greatest ending to a guildwar of all time.

I never would have played pre-revamp Vanguard. I remember looking at Beta phase 2,3 and promising not to play. Was disgusted.
That's what makes VG an even more incredible story. The class design and game design came together within a few months of revamping at the end of beta phase 4, and miraculously it worked. I agree it was a bad move for people who were expecting something different, or who wanted the old VG.
Too bad the hardware requirement was so high and people didn't want to tolerate any crashes. Tanking those out was worth it. You had to play the first 8-10 months of launch to get the real PvP experience, after that it was dead in the water.

Admittedly, I am in that screenshot as Rufin <Ebonlore> BM. I must have logged in for the Rome is Burning-esque drama.
That guild was the most loathsome experience I had. They made any and all R99 people look cool and normal by comparison.

One thing I remember vividly about playing vanguard hard at release was the bugs in that game.
Garden of xio Liu or whatever it's called had so many buggy spots where you would get stuck in the water and eat a death pointlessly.
Then there was the docks nearby. While it looked awesome, running around just found more of those weird pirate mobs until I got to a place I wasn't meant to be and I literally saw Mickey mouse looking place holder models floating around and tilting as they hit me (they were clearly place holders and weren't animated, really wish I took a screen shot).
At that point I could no longer take the game seriously and uninstalled.

I remember slathar being harassed to pick up VG and get in the game with us.
He was like idk if I got the rig for it are you sure i can play it? after listening to slathar describe the EQ junkbox he was running, which was 4 tiers below what the VG box said. namji was like ya man go get it
He was on the phone with him in bestbuy assuring him he can definitely play and left out the fact everyone just blew 5k-6k a piece for a launch rig.
Sitting in TS during install, tried to enter world. "I can't load the game, I crashed" and namji shouted "SURPRISE!!! you cant play". Never saw him again.
Going back 10 years now dayum son.

LOL... yeah I bought a new high spec laptop just to play that game smoothly... by smoothly it was still slow as fuck...
My mate got into it much later and was telling me he liked some of the mechanics such as diplomacy, pity they didn't complete one continent and release it... the game would have been much better if they slowly added the other continents rather than dumping everything half-finished and buggy...

Well, Sigil didn't want to release it. Microsoft was their publisher and had finally had enough of Brad's shit and forced it out the door. The game easily could have been a pretty polished deal at release had they stuck to some sort of project plan during development. The history of Sigil in general is a pretty interesting cautionary tale on how to torpedo a company, right up to the point where the entire staff is laid off in the parking lot without the CEO even present. It is worth a read for sure.

So let me get this straight. I played on VZ day one with 8 level spread AND item loot, then played from beta onward in Vanguard's full FFA PvP environment, and you're trying to tell me how hardcore you are because you played on Rallos Zek?

Anarion was my elf warrior. I also boxed Aenor, my elf shaman. Ebonlore were the most obnoxious forumquesters when I was following EQ2's development (before they announced no PvP at launch, at which point I never looked at the game again).

qft.
If you wanted to PvP on rallos it was you and a few pals against the world.
Depending on how you played your cards guild-wise it could mean 5v2000 or 30v200. Not all at once ofc, but as far as who was on your team.
