I had a really eerie feeling about Rexx cashing out last year. I thought it was weird he wanted to completely liquidate everything.

I remember trying to talk Rexx into sticking around a little longer clear as day. This was while he was liquidating his account last year, you probably all saw the /auctions. I bought his last item and now possibly had the last game related exchange with him ever.

After a lot of reminiscing about the glory days and VZTZ golden days, a transparent attempt to get him to stop cashing out, I asked if he was sure he didn't want to make another run. I told him people will miss him. Rexx's final words were "Nah". And then "You guys won't miss me" really short, abrupt, final. I remember thinking it didn't sound like the old Rexx. Rexx would never say that in this context. And why the fuck is he cashing out now after being inactive for months and months.

He explained he was really enjoying life with his new woman and wanted to focus on life itself. He said there was so much more to life.

I sent him my last tell "We'll... maybe you are right, it is a new generation on this server, but I would miss you pal. Just know you got guys who still remember you here"

Rexx had a big personality, he had lot's of problems and no one knows anything more than rumours on how he actually passed. I'm sure people that knew him have a few speculations as I myself do, but without knowing for sure, the one thing we can agree on is it sucks to see a good pal go so young. I think back on the last times I saw him online in league on my buddy list and we didnt even exchange IM's to see how eachother were doing, so I regret not getting a last goodbye in with my first EQ emu pal. It seems rather surreal even weeks later, people that we've spent 1,000s of hours online with and never visit in person, and it leaves a bit of a void behind realizing that it really is just a memory now. Rexx will be remembered as a mover and shaker on VZTZ, hes intrinsically tied into the EQ EMU PVP scene, and I think from that point of view, it gives me some closure on this.

If I were to state exactly why I think Lite acts the way he does, I'd be banned within 24 hours.

I think it has a lot to do with where he came from as a person. Different people from different backgrounds aren't going to see things the same way as someone from a certain upbringing. I don't think any less of Lite for the Rygrim or the Rexx related posts. Par for the course.

Acting surprised asking "Why does Lite act this way?" is the wrong line of questioning. I ask "Why doesn't Lite act this way?".

Lite is not a mensch, and doesn't want to be.

As Knuckle said, he will always be remembered as a mover and shaker in the PvP emu scene. VZTZ was the undisputed pinnacle of a red as fuck PvP server and contested pixels and Lite was absolutely not there for it.

Lite is, however, red as fuck and part of this shit definitely stems from the fact he missed VZTZ. The thread title King of VZTZ chapped his ass, then queue all the rexx FQ research he did.

Playing on Nostalrius, or any other server of any other game for that matter, quickly makes you realize R99 stopped being a game a very long time ago.

Lite kinda has a point here. I don't like agreeing with stuff like this because the tone is usually way off. This is no different.

But, I wonder why R99 ended up like this with so many OG pvpers. With people so cliqued up and afraid to switch sides and experiment.

On VZTZ you had a moshpit of guilds and contests going at all times. Outside of the top guild <Heresy> you had 3-4 guilds knocking the tar out of each other, with every new influx of new pvpers, veterans would be like "yes new guild time" and immediately form up another big force with a solid core without any trouble. The core could come from 3 different guilds, and there was no problem instantly doing it. Tink/Exed even got punked out of guildleader in 8iu when things weren't going well by one of his officers. Point is, what happened to all the movers and shakers? Did we all get old and settle?

R99 is domesticated. Red99 is the fat bitchy housewife of the pvp emu scene. If one more person complains about loot in <Empire> I hope they get volrek'd out of the guild so fast their head spins. Do it for big rexx.

<Red Dawn> was the hope we all needed. Props to big Rexx for holding it down with HB long as possible. Yea yea <Azrael> had a very serious stint itself, but it wasn't VZTZ.

Blame the <Nihilum> blueprint for all of this. The duke's leadership was fatherly and not red at all. He domesticated these animals.

Despite our incessant trolling of him and Knuckle initially, they both turned out to be cool dudes and good sports. He'll be missed.

VZTZ must have been an interesting place. Was it a lot easier? I think I recall Smedy saying something to that effect.

It certainly wasn't "easier" because VZTZ had actual competition. PvP was nonstop. The key difference is P99's anti hack code. On VZTZ, almost everyone hacked, including and especially Rexx's guild. I remember completely dominating them in Fear and having my guild banned for hacking the next day. The funny part was they had a wizard using nodescend, which allows you to levitate without ever dropping down ... essentially true flight.

So Rexx's guild were some of the biggest hackers on the server. But I suspect they had a developer in their ranks, so we were banned and they never were. This server had a similar history but Nihilum were the beneficiaries. Both Nilly and Heresy exploited Naggy but only one guild got punished for it, which allowed Nizzar to destroy the server by running Nihilum as an RMT scheme for two years.

Now, before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, I do not suspect any of the current staff of being complicit in any nefarious activities. The skype logs reveal no smoking gun. Derubael was a douchebag and they got rid of him as soon as they knew. This post is about why the culture of VZTZ was so different to Red99.

The answer is that it's due to Red99's greater sense of permanence. On VZTZ I both deleted and gave away multiple level 60s. I allowed people to have access to my characters that I knew were hackers and I didn't give a shit. Why? Because the next wipe was always right around the corner. Those characters had little value to me.

Now contrast that with Red99. The code is far more developed and stable and the developers have a stated goal of never having a wipe. Hacking is under control to a vastly greater degree than VZTZ. Characters on this server should therefore have far greater value to the players. Consequently, items have far greater value as evidenced by the amount of cash Derubael is supposed to have pulled in.

My point in typing all this to shit up Rex's fake death thread is to emphasize once again that the staff should never appear to favor one of the server's top guilds. If there were consequences for one top guild, there should have been similar consequences for the other top guild. Otherwise people stop competing because they assume there is a developer in Nihilum and joining that guild is the only way to win. Simply put, Rogean didn't do a good enough job of avoiding even the appearance of favoritism, and that killed competition.

RIP Rex if you're really gone. You were a better personality than you were a player.

Probably beta or 1.0 (VZTZ had a few versions) from the look of it. Would need someone actually in the SS to confirm. Can't go by the weapons or buffs, as VZTZ was "special" that way.

Depending on the time period, VZTZ could be considered "legit", or a garagebox nepotist trash heap with 2-3 staff playing in the guild.

As fun as VZTZ was, it didn't have the pure legitimacy of R99. (derubael account bans and stripping for resale aside)

No and no. The hacks were indeed a beautiful thing. Mage epic pets without epic were fun.

The developer of VZTZ did release the DB and source after he closed the project. Salty resurrected the VZTZ box for a brief period with the original DB and code with everyones characters just for fun.

The box itself remains in private ownership, donations lost.

He considered trying to release VZTZ 4.0 for a time but the competition from R99 and Image's server LoZ was too stiff.

Salty himself went on to play on these servers and abandoned attempts to resurrect the VZTZ project as these offerings were very high quality in comparison to what Salty was offering I believe.

Rexx was a legend to my brother and I back on VZTZ. He had a huge personality; emperor was always the appropriate nickname. Had a lot of good battles against and was guilded with him for a spell in Heresy. He made VZTZ the legendary place and community, was a core part of the lore, and led a top guild that enriched the server. Rexx will definitely NOT be forgotten by me or my brother Babylon!

Don't have many screenshots left, but a huge early highlight was getting a kill on Rexx and taking his indicolite bracer seen here, when him and a Heresy crew rolled in on our first time in PoH, them fully equipped and us in cloth. Epic battle, felt like the mighty ducks. They ended up killing us, but leaving Hate to us. I think someone eventually stole that bracer back...

Ravenous trolls ambushing and ganging up on us Ogres at their bind spots as I saw the Emperor go unconscious. Trolls bearing down on me I was able to save him with a clutch inner fire heal using most of my ogre mana-juice. The emperor stood up and max-hit the troll shadow knight that was attacking me, finishing him off. After the trolls were dispatched we emptied their purse of any coin which we used to buy provisions at a nearby merchant.

Our adventure improved as we caught some trolls alone and slammed them with our experienced team of fat-mercenaries wielding 12/45 vendor two-handers paid for by the tears of our enemies. The trolls were running away and going unconscious and sliding across the swamp only to pop up again and be met by the Emperor's maul.

The victims crying in ooc for mercy fell to deft ears, as Obama's loot and scoot policy and no child left behind acts had not been enacted at that point in time.

The swamp cared not for tongue wagglers, or forumquesters. Only strength and brutality was respected. The emperor and his band of brothers reigned that day. The swamp belonged to the Ogres, to Emperor Rexx, and his band of friends.

What I got from this post is distraction and deflection with a touch of damage control. Months ago?? Hyperbole. And it conveniently avoided updating the dukes state of affairs in EQ2.

Transition to RL is going much better, want always easy, I was in some not very good places for quite awhile, it has gotten easier and better as I've gone alone. I think we were the canaries in the coal mine as to the dangers of living ( and with P99 working ;) ) in a virtual world. All that adrenaline, Comraderie, feelings of accomplishment, all those harmones and chemicals flowing through the brain and body but No physical stress to burn them off and only fleeting results. Think I got addicted to the quick fix, the epic glory with a little grinding and teamwork. .. I have to say I did learn the power and importance of teamwork.. Any OG Heresy in GA?
