I've seen them on a few people. They do exist!

There's also a great alternative with a slightly lower barrier to entry from Velketor the Sorceror. The Vermilion Robe of Torrefaction does slightly lower sustained dps than the Solists Robe, but it's fire based so tends to land more reliably. And you don't need no stinking key to get to it!

I wish there were more mid level clicky damage gear for wizzies. Would make them more group friendly. Burnt wood staff... come on. Like mages need it more than wizzies.

Drops in VP. A few days ago we got one to drop and no wizards were present that didn't already have so we had to log on someone's wiz and run them over just to loot it.

For most guilds after a bit that, and most classic specifics in VP, tend to rot.

Pretty much this, but what can you do. Wizards excel at lots of things, but standard exp groups just isn't one of them.

Is the vermilion robe from a raid? Or is that a regular dungeon group?

Raid. It drops from Velketor.

There a quite a few wizard nuke clickies but most all are at the high end:

Solist Rend Robe - Xygoz (VP)
Vermillion Robe - Velketor (Velks)
Shissar Elementalist Staff - Hoshkar (VP)*
Growth/Thurg/Kael/Skyshrine Robe - Velious Armor Quests*
Vermillion Orb - Velketor (Velks)
Solist's Icy Wand - Kurns Tower

Those are the ones off the top of my head. The Velious Robe is the most attainable but it's a long 24 sec cast time for only 350ish DMG. Though it is a -100 FR check so it's tough to resist.

Rend robe is best DPS against low resistance mobs. Hoshkar staff is a true lure with 400 DMG / -300 FR check so it's almost guaranteed full hits every time. The Velketor robe is solid DPS if rend robe isn't an option. The Velketor orb sucks.

Solist Icy Wand is a toy for low levels.

Basically in a group, it's rend robe / conflagration robe or don't bother I think.

I have never raided in this game. I'm pretty casual. Family man, full time job. Is raiding as bad as I hear? Will I have to pretty much start poopsocking to see end game content? Or is it possible to raid with limited play time. Mostly weekends. I just want to know if there is anything end game in store for me.

Yes it's bad atm. But i think a few more months into velious a lot of content will open up with people burning out etc

Velketor isn't contested, he's up half a day sometimes - a lot of the smaller guilds kill him.

How long does a typical raid there last?

Depends.

Tunare raids may require 6 hours.
A Kunark dragon like Talendor may die in 60 seconds.

They come in all shapes and sizes. Your typical armor farm raids in Hate, HoT, Kael, I'm guessing run 2-4 hours generally. Your typical boss raid runs about 5-10 minutes of pulling and killing the boss. There are clearly exceptions to these though.

A typical Velketor raid might take a half hour or so if everything goes smoothly. If you'd want to be seriously considered for winning the robe if it drops, you'd probably need to raid with the guild in question for a while though. There are a lot of max level wizards running around in raid guilds that would probably love to get their hands on one. If you're not really able to raid consistently, it might be tough to snag one.

Your typical boss raid runs about 5-10 minutes of pulling and killing the boss.

The 5-10 minutes of actual boss raid is also predicated by camping your character in or near the zone and waiting at character select for ~1-16 hours for the text message alert or wakeup shout in your voice comm application to log in for the boss raid.

Rend robe is nice for a lot of non raid situations too. Reeeeal mana saver. Got one my first week in <Forsaken> on the first day of Velious release. Wear it full time even though I got a robe w\ better stats and resist.

Join a smaller guild (if you play in Oz/NZ hours join Infernus) there are lots of smaller guilds that kill easier/smaller targets and you can experience raids and higher end loot, though it will never be high end gear - but you need a lot more playtime for that.
But you can easily get most epics/full thurgadin/fear armour from a small guild!
