You should probably adjust this by some sort of PPP metric based on cost of living. Where I live approximately 1/5 people earns $100k plus.

And didn't you ask this just a few months ago?

just wanna get a general idea of what the r99 community is working with. If some people want to go into detail about where they've selected to live, etc, in order to make the most of their earnings, that's cool too.

I got pretty damn good with C++ in my teens when I got really into macroquest. Definitely wish I'd followed up with it once I stopped playing EQ, could have gone a long way.

Fortunately there are ton of awesome developers at my job at the moment, which placed me in a perfect environment to get back into coding. Studying daily in order to be able to transition into the dev team.

You can certainly live off 60k a year in NYC, Just don't expect to be renting an upscale apartment in Manhattan. Most people who work in the city live in the outerboroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx) which are much more affordable.

Not all of us can live in Boystown with their husband like slathar. Slathar's community is accepting new applications though. The requirements are an undercut hairstyle, skinny jeans and no less then 5 different pairs of tom's slip-ons.

It is just a terribly bad idea to post what you make online. Let's say a year from now you convince a buddy from work to try R99, he looks through your post history and sees you make 10% more than him. He complains and you're in your bosses office explaining why you discussed your salary.

I say the same shit to people who post dumb crap all over their facebook, the internet is forever and if you think HR departments and hiring managers aren't e-stalking you before they decide to hire or promote you than you are a dum dum.

I am 28. I have a regular day job selling LiDAR which is used in self driving cars and drones. Its like radar but with lasers. I spend most of my EQ time playing in hotels around the country. I have probably Everquested in more locations than anyone else.

I also recently started a distribution business importing industrial machines and accessories from Europe and selling them in the US due to the declining Euro. I rely on my self-taught google SEO skills to bring in leads, for free. I started this company while still at my last job which was in the same market, except I didn't have a non-compete. The look on the CEO's face the day he confronted me about it - priceless.

I have over 100 different positions in the 5 core assets of stocks, bonds, currencies, real estate, and commodities across 6 brokerages and have 6 figures in liquid assets.

I credit most of my success to EQ and UO. Everything from learning how to type quickly before someone runs off screen to spotting market opportunities in game to the research and analytical skills needed to excel in these classic MMOs. The task killing efficiency I learned when boxing on classic, or PVPing in UO is a skill that none of my peers have.

I grew up relatively poor and have worked at over 25 different jobs. I used to ride my bike 6 miles to pick up the latest EQ releases.

Can we get a little bit of details? What type of property management? Residential?

What type of real estate sales?

Years self-employed, how you started.

I know this started as a troll thread by some attention starved guy, but a lot of us are at the age where we are looking for another hustle or are working transient jobs since the financial crash.

A little bit of details when posting your gigs would be cool rather than just bragging about all the $ you are making, just saying.

It all started playing UO at age 14-18 which got me interested in Real Estate (no joke). Used the money I had saved from working age 16-23 to buy my first house and I also acquired my Real Estate License which allows me to sell and manage residential real estate for others.

From age 23-32 I bought 4 more homes and moved into each new one while renting fully the one I left. Up until last year, I had friends living in every room of the house I lived in paying me rent which more than covered the mortgage. We were all gamers too so it worked out well.

Today in my early 30s , I own a small portfolio of Real Estate which is either rented long term or short term (airbnb) which provides a modest income of $30k/yr while each property pays for itself on 20 yr mortgages.

My bulk source of income is the sales and property management career where I make way too much money, 3-6% selling homes for others and managing rentals for them for a 10% monthly fee. The personal real estate portfolio helps but is mainly for retirement or when a bus hits me and I cant work anymore.

My success is a combination of an early start, persistence and timing of when I made some money and the state of the housing market when I made it and what I chose to do with my spoils. It would be difficult to recreate exactly but the morale is, MMOs helped me identify market opportunities, especially with real estate, THANKS ULTIMA ONLINE! See Dad, I wasn't wasting all my time in High School!

I think its hilarious others here pointed out their MMO experience as a precursor to success. It really is true.

Was specifically interested in your sales history. What state, how many agencies did you work for, do you still work for the same agency you made your first sale with?

How hard was it to break into sales? It sounds like you are a free agent now that works sale to sale, without any partnership or contract with the agency at all. A subcontractor or whatever it would be called I can't think of the word. Freelance sales agent fits best I guess.

Is that accurate? And is that how you started in sales? Around here, the big agencies seem to dominate a lot of the work, but with the rise of the internet I am guessing freelance sales is big business?

Was specifically interested in your sales history. What state, how many agencies did you work for, do you still work for the same agency you made your first sale with?

How hard was it to break into sales? It sounds like you are a free agent now that works sale to sale, without any partnership or contract with the agency at all. A subcontractor or whatever it would be called I can't think of the word. Freelance sales agent fits best I guess.

Is that accurate? And is that how you started in sales? Around here, the big agencies seem to dominate a lot of the work, but with the rise of the internet I am guessing freelance sales is big business?

California working for the same agency I started with 12 years ago. I split my commissions 80/20 until I reach a fiscal year goal then it goes to 90/10.

It is not easy to get started and can be discouraging. Takes a lot of persistence and being able to be told "no" a lot without losing motivation. Its all about branding yourself. Agencies are less important today than ever. Its more about YOUR Yelp, Facebook and Zillow reviews, not your Broker's. I feel like a good salesman is a good salesman, it doesn't really matter what you're selling so long as you're motivated and believe in the product. So if you're going to sell anything...why not real estate which pays great and gives you the potential to have a very flexible work schedule?

I think that right there is what seperates good salesmen from ones who can't find any success. Putting in a strong effort, and the repeated letdowns and then putting in the same effort again and again. I'm sure a lot of guys wash out quickly and take refuge in a fixed salary office job.

I'll probably end up finding out for myself, so I appreciate the info. Graduate school isn't making much sense right now and a flex schedule that gives back what you put into it is definitely up my alley. I'm just looking to make above average money at this point.

I might vote if the poll results weren't public and you had options for 5k a year. But mainly if the poll wasn't public. I am kind of nervous to give any real information with this community of shining examples of mental stability. This is like a social experiment of what happens when you let the patients take over the asylum.

From nowhere midwest
Touched my first computer when I was 5y/o.
Built my first computer from garage sale parts by 8y/o.
Taught myself to code by 10y/o.
Started playing UO around then. Scripted bots that harvested / crafted.
Played EQ around 12-15y/o, got big into MQ2. Could unattended macro lvs. 1-40.
Farmed BoT towers every night in PoP w/ group of 3. Pulled in about 100kpp/night on FV.
RMT'd around 30k worth gear when I was 15.
Went to College, hated it. Worked for the College, hated it.
Got into HPC creating distributed systems.
Started my own Silicon Valley consultancy.
Helped create a few multi-billion $ companies.
Started my own company.
Not even 30.
?? profit

Now that I think back on it, playing FPS/UO/EQ when I was growing up really enforced a lot of the skills required to succeed in the world at large.

Also farmed BoT towers solo, 2x enchanter druid was better though 'cause you could take down the wing bosses. Also trio'd Rallos Zek for funses/profit.
