well i guess this intended after reading above post but ill post logs anyway... 255 FR, In the second attempt u can see I took a burst of 4 AEs within 8 seconds for 2600dmg and over 1 min took over 5k dmg.

Thanks for the quick reply, From reading through that thread it appears to be as you say, except that the AE seems to be point blank when procced (should be targeted on the tank) and also seems to be proccing consistently at a much higher rate than the al'kabor logs, in multiple instances it was very rapid as you can see in the fraps posted above.(4-5 times in a few seconds consistently rather than twice in a few seconds sporadically). Perhaps just some fine tuning is needed in the % chance to proc.
Unrelated to the central issue, but is his fear also changed? seems to be much less chance to resist (even with 255 MR) and also full durations each time. It should be noted that on a sont fight, a full duration fear is nearly as long as the encounter itself.

From 0:20 to 1:30 that cleric casts no group heals on his group. They all are slowly taking AOE damage and then at the end of it he casts a group CH to top off his group.

He seems to take AEs (loses buff and Halfling makes audible "I got hit noise" at 0:18, 0:32, 0:50, 1:04, 1:16, 1:30, (he DAs), 2:00, 2:14. Suggesting a 12-14 second delay between AEs... Never once do two AEs come back to back in a 3-5second period.

A few things:

On P99 over that 70 second period you could expect 14-21 Fire AE procs over that duration (assuming 3-5sec between procs like observed last night). That is more than double a fully buffed MT's HP. Yet they seem to have no problem not healing during that period of time.

It is slightly possible he proc'd that much and they just resisted a lot? I doubt this however they may be stacking 255 FR whereas on P99 we are required to stack 255 MR instead.

Which brings me to another point. Again - http://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=205932&highlight=Roar - Notice how very few people are eating fears. Trying to cast group CH (12s cast time) on P99 would be absolutely suicide. However here he has no issue because he really never gets feared. Dragon Roar REALLY needs to be put on the correct version with no extra Lure check.

That part certainly isn't.

People are required to go 255 MR on Sont. Even with that you're eating 20 second fears regularly.

If you were to go 120 MR / 255 FR And not be feared over half the time, that'd be incredible.

He goes 70 seconds without casting a SINGLE heal on a group member...

He lets them casually get down to 20-30% and then casts a group CH. He gets feared maybe 2 times for 6 seconds each perhaps.

There is no concern about relying on a 12 second cast time spell during classic to heal. Not from a highly likely fear which would interrupt him or from the RNG having him "proc" 4-650DD AEs in that time period.

The proc rate or fire rate is not classic.
The fear resist check isn't classic either.

Sontalak was always a burn fight. Kill him in under 2-3 minutes or your cleric has no mana at the end. That's about what you see in that video.

On P99 though trying to last 3 minutes against him is just not happening. It's "bring all your DPS and zero support" right now.

The proc rate or refresh is way too high. On one of the engages my group had everyone drop from full health to 50-30% in a matter of seconds. I will have to double check logs when I get back home but I believe I saw two procs go off in a round and several in the 3 - 4 second range.

Already did that Raev. It seems to proc about every 12 seconds or so. I'm inclined to say it has a delay on its proc. One that may have been removed in later expansions like Luclin/Velious.

Hardly anyone killed Sontalak 4 months into Velious

Show proof of him being a breeze in this era, not some omens of war garbage. Most people werent even level 60. He's dying every time he spawns with ease, while wiping a zerge force using completely wrong strat. Going to forums when things aren't going your way is the new strategy?

I don't disagree with the fact that it is a proc, what I think however is either the proc rate is set too high (unlikely) OR the proc has a cooldown/recharge on it (more likely).

I'm basing this on the timings I posted each of which the cleric is hit and loses by a buff being rather fixed on the timing spread. 12-14seconds each time. So I wouldn't doubt he is supposed to proc it, but cannot do more than once per 12 seconds or something.

Did you resist any? 20 Seconds with no proc is very uncharacteristic of this mob.

Of the procs I posted all were as a result of Flurries on the MT.

I heard someone else give that explanation, then they proceeded to suggest Shakerpaging worked because furious discipline and ripostes. I had to facepalm hard. It's not called Shakerfurious is it???

It seems like he is just an overpowered VS, whose proc is AE and he dispells your runes to prevent the proc. And he Flurrys. And he fears with an OP fear.

Worth noting that the Rampage kills have been with 60-70 players and Sont starts fleeing when Rampage has less than 10 ppl standing after blowing thousands of plat on clickies, so he is *barely* killable.

He's broken yeah, but it just requires a solid strat that does NOT involve 100 ppl hitting him in the face.

It's a proc for a reason there should be no re use timer on a proc... Just cause a raid target doesn't fall over dead when you toss 100+ players at it means it needs to be nerfed. The fight should be hard as hell stop trying to ruin it for the players that know how and understand what need's to be done to slay this beast.

Procing every 12 seconds with fear, dispells and possible Z axis warping mixed in is still very much a challenge. The best evidence possible, an in era video, shows the cleric getting hit every 12-14 seconds like clockwork by that AE Proc.

His fear is also the wrong version most likely, using a -150 check when it should be a 0 resist version.

Yeah I think I ate three fears, including the fears I took when I was almost fully dispelled. My MR gear gets me to around 210. I obv don't stop at the gear though.

Sont's difficulty is greatly multiplied by the fear. Far more so than the proc.

If they fixed the fear on Velious dragons they would be a cake walk with this server's relative gear and hardcore bent compared to circa 2001 EverQuest.

For example, Zlandicar was a joke on live even when he was current content - you could 2 group him by mid Luclin if I remember right. But since his proc is AE instead of single target and the fear, he's harder than a lot of ToV dragons.

So maybe Nilbog and Alunova just want to make it unclassicly difficult.

There were 3+ different versions of Sontalak until Luclin or something.

Noone killed him for ST keys because he was a PITA, sounds classic enough the way they have it now.

He was a PITA because people were bad and underleveled, and usually only the top guild could kill him. Theres 5 guilds on this server that are equal or better geared to what top guilds were rolling with in 2001.

It's not just Sont though - Klandicar and Zland are also both overtuned because of the AE Fear.

i had 255 mr and 245 fr as paladin.

i got feared just 1 times, i resisted the aoe fire a bunch of times, untill dispells killed my buffs.

prety much the same happened in live from my personal experience , sontalak was a all or nothing fight .

I only killed Sont once on live in timeframe and it was all about resisting the fear - your clerics / shaman / druids / pallys could keep everyone going if they didn't get a bad fear on them - I was not very well geared and only got feared 2 times during the fairly long fight and the AoE didn't basically instant kill you like here.... it was more, well exactly like that in era vid that was posted.. I don't see how people are trying to say NOT to make it like what is clearly given in a proper era video that shows how it should be, just because it "has been done" in its current form...

If you had clickies and a bard, like most "dmg+despell+fear" dragons you could survive long enough to win, SKs and Pals had an advantage because they could tap/self heal and live a little longer than if your bard ate a fear and ran off, or cleric got a bad timed fear etc.

6 months into Velious on The Nameless :

Ladies and Gents, this dragon was a blast to fight. A *very* unique encounter compared to most of the other SoV and RoK stuff we're accustomed to. So earlier today I posted on our Forums that we were going to have to start keeeling Sontalak because the other guilds on the The Nameless have finally discovered the Klandicar is the single biggest poosae on the face of Norrath. We start putting together a strat thread and people start posting all the l33t sploits they've heard about in IRC and on other message boards. But rather than try any of those methods, we just decided to see how we did in a straight-up, toe-to-toe with Sontacack. Needless to say, 35 members of LoS >>>>> Sontalak

from my experience its totally the proc. The fear can be resisted, if not as well as classic. I've watched that proc eat entire BARD groups in seconds. 4+ procs in under 9 seconds is too much for anyone to heal without the above mentioned clickies.

From 0:20 to 1:30 that cleric casts no group heals on his group. They all are slowly taking AOE damage and then at the end of it he casts a group CH to top off his group.

He seems to take AEs (loses buff and Halfling makes audible "I got hit noise" at 0:18, 0:32, 0:50, 1:04, 1:16, 1:30, (he DAs), 2:00, 2:14. Suggesting a 12-14 second delay between AEs... Never once do two AEs come back to back in a 3-5second period.

A few things:

On P99 over that 70 second period you could expect 14-21 Fire AE procs over that duration (assuming 3-5sec between procs like observed last night). That is more than double a fully buffed MT's HP. Yet they seem to have no problem not healing during that period of time.

It is slightly possible he proc'd that much and they just resisted a lot? I doubt this however they may be stacking 255 FR whereas on P99 we are required to stack 255 MR instead.

Which brings me to another point. Again - http://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=205932&highlight=Roar - Notice how very few people are eating fears. Trying to cast group CH (12s cast time) on P99 would be absolutely suicide. However here he has no issue because he really never gets feared. Dragon Roar REALLY needs to be put on the correct version with no extra Lure check.

If it is intended to be a proc, it seems to have a recharge on it around 12 seconds. If it intended to be a proc in classic it should have a recast of about 12-14 seconds.

He was certainly harder than the other first brood but he shouldn't be that ridiculous.

The Char effect that Sontalak currently procs is functioning as an AE. Whenever a mob procs an ability it should convert to be a single targetted spell.

See Zlandicar and Stun Breath as well.

This is a huge balance issue presenting Zlandicar and Sontalak specifically right now. Making the fights far different than they should be. If Sontalak would properly convert his Char Proc to only hit the MT, and have his normal AE firing at 12 seconds this dragon may see his untimely end like he should.

It's just common sense that Sontalak shouldn't be nearly this hard.

Switching the Velious dragons to a dragon fear without the -150 mod would help hugely here and is pretty easy to do.

Alternatively, could we switch Sontalak and Vulak's loot tables? That would make for some fun times!
