Hello all, my name is Verril and I am a brand spankin' new player! I've always wanted to play Everquest, but my mom wouldn't buy it for me when I was a kid. :(

My friend used to play Everquest. Whenever I went over to his house, I would make characters and run around exploring but never actually got to "play" for any extended amount of time. So now I'm hoping to see what I missed out on!

If you find yourself in water, go into first person to steer up/down. You also often need to look nearly straight up to get out of the water and onto some of the ledges.

I heard if you're a witch, you sink in water. Or was it the other way around?

Anyway, you might be a witch.

It looks like I was able to get out using Chroma's advice. :)

Can anyone give me a general idea of what the first things I should be doing are? Right now I'm talking to Niola Impholder and she's asking if I can [fetch] some spell components for her, but I can't figure out how to accept or get more information.

Often NPC's that offer a quest have keywords in [brackets]. This where you have to get oldschool and actually sort of talk to them. You get used to this after a while, but let me give you an example.

You say, 'Hail, Klok Mugruk'

Klok Mugruk says 'Welcome to my shop, sss. Only the finessst I have. I make for you jussst as I make for the emperor's harem. Many [bristle silk] garmentsss do they need. Ssss.. Lucky man, the emperor isss.

You say, 'what bristle silk?'

Klok Mugruk says 'What is bristle silk?!! Huh? Where have you been living? Under the rocksss.. Nahh. I sssee. You are a broodling from the common ssstock. You could never afford bristle silk nor the affectionss of those who drape themselves with it. Still, commons have much ssservice to offer. Maybe you would like to earn some [curscale armor]. Hmm?

You say, 'what is curscale armor?'

Klok Mugruk says 'Curscale armor? I make thisss crude armor from the broodlings of the scaled wolves. I use the ssskins of the pupsss and cubs. Those ssskins are ssstill young and thin and are bessst for the young adventurers. I sssupply them to the Legion of Cabilisss, but for a [small service] I shall make them available to you.

You say, 'what small service?'

Klok Mugruk says 'I am in need of pup and cub scaled wolf skins to create more [curscale armor]. Many Legionnaires have died in battle. The Baron demands more sssuits. I mussst have more ssskins or it is MY HIDE!! I shall reward pieces of the curscale armor to any who [perform a small service].

You say, 'I will perform a small service'

Klok Mugruk says 'Good. You take thisss pack and fill it all with scaled curskins. Only the pupsss and cubs of the scaled wolves shall do. They are not much for one sssuch as you. Combine all those ssskins and return the full curskin pack and I shall reward you with any available piece of curskin armor and a sssmall amount of coin. Mossst important is that you shall be proving your allegiance to all of Cabilisss.

This where the p99 wiki comes in handy (http://wiki.project1999.com). I would still encourage you to adventure and explore the world naturally, but if you want on the quick and dirty path to leveling you need to go out the front door of Felwithe and slay some things. The maps on the wiki should also help, and you can find a number of new player guides as well.

Welcome! And good choice to start with. Once you figure water out, the rest of the game is fairly straight forward.

Remember, the lands can be treacherous! Becareful, make friends with others and most of all, have fun!

EDIT:

Exactly what the guide says. However Wiki is way more than just a cheat sheet. I advise you visit wiki.project1999.com. SO much information that will help you as an adventurer. It can be just like the guide books you get when purchasing a new video game.

Don't forget to consider (con) mobs by pressing C.

Red = will kill you
Yellow = will probably kill you
White = even level with you
Blue = lower level than you
Green = way lower level than you

I was trying to reply to her by typing things like "/fetch" and [fetch]. Turns out what I had to say was "I will fetch some for you." Should I be expecting a lot of that kind of thing?

Essentially every quest works like that. Questing though is not the common way to level, and usually is done for specific rewards. The exception that applies to you are Crushbone Belts. I'd recommend you do some independent research, or ask in game when you have specific questions. typing /ooc before your message will allow you to talk to everyone in the zone.

LOL, if you're new... try this one:
Red = You will probably be dead before you realize the danger you are in
Yellow = You will regret this decision almost immediately
White = You will regret this decision and wonder why you thought you could win a fair fight
Blue = You might win
Green = You will win, but what is the point

HAHA truth, but it all depends on the level.

At level 60 green might read:

Green = You are going to die.

Project 1999 Blue. I like the idea of PvP and I'm a self identified sheep but I don't mind getting ganked. I'd just like to learn a few more things before trying out Red. :p

Edit: My character's name is Felkorr.

Can anyone tell me what the population of p99 is compared to EQ back in the old days? Is it significantly lower?

Also, is there an active RP population on this server?

The more populous servers were consistently around 2,000 players at primetime when I started in 2000. I've seen our numbers as high as 1,500 and I'm sure others can attest to different values. I think that's probably pretty close to the servers that were down lower on the list alphabetically.

I don't see a whole lot of roleplayers. I'm sure they're around but I haven't sought them out. I used to be big into roleplaying on Live but I save it more for the tabletop at this point. I don't think a static world is a great environment for it but it can add a little spice to daily life.

PS- Welcome! Hope you're having a good time :)

as a total newb i can tell you one thing you will need to know.

You will die.
You will die a lot.

Corpse recovery will be the most important thing for you to learn.
Sense Heading is the most important skill for you to raise if you want to be able to learn to recover your corpses.
When you visit your guildmaster, right click on them and put at least 1 point into Sense Heading then make a hot key that uses that skill. Then map that hot button to one of the keys you use for moving around. Mine is mapped to my left arrow key so every time i turn left, i practice Sense Heading. you will have that skill maxed before you reach level 5.

I could give you step by step instructions, but it's better that you explore your game interface and discover how to do all this on your own. The most useful clue I can give you is alt-o will open up your Options window. Explore this fully.

And read the Wiki!

Good luck and be careful. Almost everything you meet out there wants to kill you.

some advice: do no quests unless you're doing them for exp like the crushbone belt quest. At your level very few items are worth your time of the quests on a server this old. Just focus on getting some levels under you so you can travel more safely.

Verril

Thanks everybody for the advice. Seems like I should just be focused on grinding out a few levels until I get some PP and a few more spells for my mage. I'm only lvl 2 right now but I haven't much time to play. Still having fun throwing fireballs at bats though.

Your Mage won't really come into his own until you reach level4 and can start casting pets.
Until then you're just a weak wizard.

You're not going to meet alot of people instigating roleplay on you, so you have to play the lead role yourself - Just keep it up, some will find it endearing/entertaining and certainly join in sometimes - Dont falter buddie, try and keep it to more than a grindfest on Blue.

But I gotta admit Red is really suited for Roleplaying, as Ive tried playing an Erudite wizard there each encounter lead to some great roleplaying moments, as Im trying to stay alive and peaceful atleast amongst what are considered Good races.
The PK'ers around the noob era(Faydwer, CB) really ruined it for me though with their mindless continuing killing of naked noobs. I managed to stay alive untill a Paladin of all people killed me several times right from stepping off the elf elevator there.

Lets try and make it more like:
Blue - Roleplaying casual oriented
Red - Gameplaying PVP oriented

I remember slaughtering Felwithe guards in the back end of Felwithe. Occasionally a new character would stop and watch the latest victim meet his end...great opportunity for some roleplay.

Ask Soandso to do the right thing, loot the corpse of the dead guardsman and take his sword to the vendor to help themselves...but that doing so would be to support the killing of city guards and the worship of Cazic Thule.

Some might have been people's alts, but based on that saint/sinner choice some would rather denounce the killing of the guards and walk away rather than loot a 21pp sword for themselves (that'd be enough to cover spell levels 1-8, wouldnt it?).

Despite the name 'EverQuest' there is not really that much questing which is worthwhile. Like a previous poster said it is just for certain items which are considered worth the effort.

On the subject of corpse retrieval: Learn how to use the /loc command especially with a hotkey macro.

To make a hotkey macro. It's in the main Actions menu under Socials, or press Ctrl-O for short. Right click any empty box and give it a Social name Loc. Then in the first line type in /loc then click Accept. Click and hold this button and drag it to your hotkey action bar.

Now press it anytime you're in a fight, especially if you think you're going to die. Do it before you die, or else the UI disappears when you actually die.

How the loc command works: From http://wiki.project1999.com/Commands#.2Floc
To get your coordinate location in your current zone, type "/loc" or simply "/l". The resulting set of numbers is in the form of (y, x, z).

y: North (positive) and South (negative)
x: West (positive) and East (negative)
z: Up (positive) and Down (negative)

Note: The z coordinate often won't be needed, and is therefore not used in many cases.
Example: If you are at (200, 500) and you need to get to (-1300, 400), you must travel South and slightly to the East.

Another tip - put at least 1 point into Sense Heading at your trainer, make a hotkey for it, and press it lots to get it to 200!

Also with sense heading, bind it to a movement key (W, A or D perhaps), its effort free attempts that way.
