View Full Version : Tales from the Druid newbee Volume 2

I realized once I came back I never updated my bog "Tales of the Druid newbee" so I figured since i'm not exactly a newbee anymore I would move it from the Starting zone to here in the Priest forum :)
I had to take a break from the game for a bit due to my gaming rig finally dying. I missed p99 so much I decided to go ahead and load it on my laptop instead. Surprisingly it seems to play just as well there :) So on to what Saum has been up to since his return.
I spent levels 29-34 in The Overthere. Nearly exclusively root rotting since it allowed me to take care of the pups and do a little side work. The upside is it was a good way to get some work done while I was playing EQ. plenty of down time :) The downside is it was Slooooooooooow leveling. By the time I hit 34 I was certain my eyes were going to start bleeding if i Saw another darn Cactus, Sabertooth, or Rhino.
Once I dinged 34 I was really stoked. this was for 2 reasons. 1st it meant I could leave The Overthere and head to one of my other favorite zones The Great Divide !!! 2nd I knew I had enough mana to start quading :)
I plowed through 34 and went straight to 36 Quad kiting the Tizmaks :) Now the best part is your really close to Thurg, Its easy to pick up ports and after doing level after level in zones where no loot drops you can even pick up a couple plat per quad :) nice transition :)
Till next time :)

The long term goal for this is two fold.
1: to keep track of all the places i've been and people I meet on my journey
2: to eventually put together a leveling guide off where I hunted
I saw you running around Thurg yesterday. Happy adventuring to you!

I hit 37 last night at the Tiz caves :) surprisingly even though a few of them are green now it was still good exp. I average just under a blue per quad. After I dinged as is my normal tradition I spent the rest of the night helping folks out. porting for free and buffing newbies in the commonlands :)
Speaking of porting .... When did it become common place for folks to request ports by saying "Looking for a port !" now while that seems ok, it doesn't really tell me where you want to go. Normally I assume you want to go to WL or CS so i am not going to be sending you a tell. Am I the only druid that was wanted to pick these folks up and port them someplace obscure :)
Also, when did it become ok to spam "porting to everywhere in gods creation every 30 seconds in zone. Anybody else as annoyed by that as I am? If I might offer a suggestion. do what I do.
1: hang out and send a tell when someone asks for a port.
or
2: hit your Porting hotkey when someone asks for a port ;) "this also takes care of the above issue with people not being specific"
Anyway not sure If i will stay at the Tizmak caves much longer. I might move over to eastern wastes to see if that's good quading. hopefully it isn't to camped :)

I havent gotten to play much this past week. I would love to tell you it was due to all the halloween parties i had to attend.... but nope its work /sigh always work
anyway
Saturday i spent the time I was online trying to do the halloween quest. I didn't get to finish it but i was having fun exploring zones I hadn't been to in many years.
Good job on the staff for putting it together :)
the highlight for me was something that would probably make most folks laugh. while looking for the quest mobs i hit track and it went to 51 !!! Squee for higher tracking :) !
Sunday I decided to level a bit and decided to head over to Eastern Wastes to try my hand at walruses. I had a little difficulty splitting just 4 of them off the heard at first and I got tagged with the death squads twice. but I did finally learn the correct angle to pull from and managed to get a few quads in. really good xp. to bad the loot is crap. Sunday evening I tried to run over and help my little enchanter buddy out. she seems stuck at 23. Unfortunately we didn't get to do as much as I would have liked. maybe next time.
Well i dont think I can hit 38 tonight but i am sure going to try :) till next time

Well here is a mini update for you. Last night I was finally able to get back online. "Work has been brutal" I beebopped in Great Divide a bit and tried my hand at kodiaks. They are very doable at 37 though a bit hard to gather up for a quad. I also did a bit of porting to try and raise some funds for spells I know I will have to buy in 1.5 levels.
Interestingly enough I met a gent named Bonecollector last night who explained how the tooth flagging for Velious works. Now when I originally started in EQ Velious was just coming out, and it was a long time before I actually made it to Velious. So long in fact that the keys were no longer required. Since I was in Great Divide anyway I went ahead and grabbed the tooth in GD. I also realized I'm going to have to figure out how I am going to get to CS for the last one. I also need to figure out if they are permakeys or if I need to keep one on me at all times. Bone said he would walk me to CS tonight and I hope he does ! Its been years since i went through Skyshrine or Kael or even spent time in CS "where i spent soooo much time quading in my early days
Someone really should do a write up on those tooth keys :)
Till next time Ill be out there collecting more teeth than the Tooth Fairy

tooth collector?
There's a write-up on it here (http://wiki.project1999.com/The_Missing_Velious_Guide).
Getting to Velious by port
There are four zones to which you can port on Velious: Iceclad Ocean, Great Divide, Wakening Land, and Cobalt Scar. All but Iceclad Ocean require a special tooth for porting, both for the porter and the portees. Anyone can port to Iceclad without a tooth of any kind. To retrieve these teeth, you must travel to the zones the old-fashioned way and pick up the ground spawns at the center of the dragon portals. The teeth are soulbound, so if you die, they will travel with you if they were on your person when you died.
These are increasingly difficult to get the further into the continent you go, with the most difficult being the Tooth of the Cobalt Scar. This tooth, because it is the most difficult, will allow you to port to GD, WL and CS. Tooth of the Wakening Lands will allow you to port to GD and WL. Tooth of the Great Divide will only allow you to port to GD.
To get the Tooth of the Cobalt Scar, you must first get a Shrine Key to pass through Skyshrine into Cobalt Scar.
Take care both in porting in and retrieving the teeth. Wuoshi likes to hang out in the dragon portal in The Wakening Land.
The Shrine Key will allow the whole group to zone into Skyshrine, so all you really need is a friend with a key to get into CS.

thanks Sorn :) knowing they are soulbound really helps :)
now i just have to run through Kael and then Skyshrine Lol :) I'm actually looking forward to it :) "maybe i should do it naked just incase"

Busy EQ weekend for me :)
Friday night I logged in and before I could even get to my first kite spot Bonecollector sent me a tell asking if I was ready to do the CS run. "Sure" I told him ! We proceeded through EW to the entrance of Khael. Being 37 at the time I was more than a little concerned about see invis mobs being a problem. Bone assured me that it wouldn't be one, and if there were any see invis mobs that he could solo them "necros are so over powered"
We made the Kael run without any difficulty and then it was on to Wakening lands. Now I hadn't been in WL in many years. I had forgotten how over grown it was. I kept working working my track button and everything was as red as can be. but we managed to make it through.
The Skyshrine run didn't worry me as badly and we made it to the pot portal without to much trouble. Just like that I had the tooth of the Cobalt Scar in my bag and would be set for the rest of my time in Velious.
A big thanks for helping me with this goes out to my friend Bonecollector. That is definitely A load off my mind.
After that run it was on to grinding. I managed to do a little work at the Tizmak caves and a few Giants from time to time. That was all it took to finally ding 38. Thank god I feel like I have been stuck in 37 for an eon ! I did my usualy celebratory port for free and buff newbees late friday night and got all setup for my saturday morning run.
Saturday I decided to start out trying Walrus and Ulthork's again. I can quad them but my mana pool is just a smidge light still. "To many resists to make it effective". Luckily i got a "Fatty Walrus Meat" to drop off my quad and was able to run over to Iceclad and pick up some new sleeves "Cougarskin Sleeves (http://wiki.project1999.com/Cougarskin_Sleeves)"
After the armor upgrade I headed back to Thurgadin to do a little banking and med up. I wanted to try giants in the great divide just to see if they would be quadable. As I exited the zone i saw a /ooc from Tissamo asking if anyone was working on Giant faction. He wanted to leach a little faction. I told him what I was planning and invited him along. We headed over to the spires and proceeded to just trash the living crap out of every giant and wolf we could find. I even managed to get the Blood Wolf Harness (http://wiki.project1999.com/Blood_Wolf_Harness) for the Kromrif Military Leggings (http://wiki.project1999.com/Kromrif_Military_Leggings). We used the standard snare / Flame Lick method. I kept agro and he would be a walking dot behind the mob.
Eventually after a few hours we went and checked faction. "Finding the turn in mob for the armor quests was a bit of a pain" and Tiss managed to get up to kindly. "Im indifferent" A big thanks to Whitebird who also came over and helped out a bit.
Next it was on to leveling. I decided to do the Cave Kodiaks. mostly due to Tizmaks finally greening out at 38. The kodiaks are an easy kite as long as you know that you are GOING to get hit once or twice while gathering them up. The method I prefer is to go into one of the caves WITH INVIS UP. pass 4 kodiaks and then break invis. as the first agros you. run back to the cave entrance gathering the others along the way. Once you are outside just snare them and begin your quad ! It took the remainder of the day but I did manage to Ding 39 !
Sunday it was a day to do a little exploring and to pick up all my 39 spells. I did some porting and went back to EW to try the Ulthorks and walruses. "still to many resists" I even tried the smaller Rygor camp that has 5 Rygors in it. That was a big mistake as it deleveled me for a min. Those suckers move like greased lightning. the first mob resisted and i couldn't get enough space to clear it. So they are a no go for a bit. Sunday night it was back to the Kodiaks and safty. I managed to do about 1/2 of 39 in a few hours. I think i should hit 40 without to much trouble on the Kodiaks then we will give eastern wastes 1 more go.

Thanks Frag :) I have been enjoying it :) !
Last night I got to log in for a bit and decided to try the Dwarfs in BB that here had been so much talk about in the Druid Solo Guide. I followed Maestro Morganti guide. "BTW if you haven't seen his video on this here is the link. very well done and his videos for the druid epic are great :) ! "
Dwarfs at the Docks: https://youtu.be/bTWPauhAj2Y
Dwarfs on the Coast: https://youtu.be/yVXk0e9okls
I wanted to try the docks but unfortunately they were camped. So I went ahead and did the coastal Dwarfs. "Again thank you Maestro Morganti for a great writeup" the pull was straight forward and there wasn't any real trouble with the gathering them up or the kite in that open area. Surprisingly the xp was about the same as the Kodiaks in Great Divide. The difference being the look was better :) So I have another spot to add to my quading table and hopefully I can do the docks atleast once to get a feel for that. I finished the night 8 blue from 40. Not to bad overall. I figure I have about 6 more kites to make it to 40 ! :)

Yesterday was fun. Since it was a holiday, I figured I wouldn't have to many clients come into the shop. It seemed like a perfect day to bring in the laptop and slack off a bit in P99 ! I dinged 40 pretty early and decided it was time to head over to W/L and pick up my 44/49 spells so i wouldn't have to worry about it later.
I grabbed a port in the common lands and headed for W/L.........
Yup I got Woushi'ed !! Now the porter who took me was as surprised as I was that he had popped but apparently we were not the only two. I saw some zone comments as I was getting mauled saying "Lol here are another 2 victims"
Now if you have read previous posts in this journal you would know I have a little bit of a fear of Kael. The thought of doing the run through Kael naked was not something I was looking forward too. Since it had to be done I started looking for someone who could move our bodies away from Woushi and towards kael. Luckily Johnwilks hooked us up on that. "thanks again man I owe ya one"The wizard who ported me and I headed towards Kael and managed to snake our way through without to much trouble thank Tunare. "Maybe its just me but I seem to remember ALOT more see invis during that run"
Once we made it through to the W/L the wizard decided to just loot and scoot. So It was just me left to try and find a ress if possible. Luckily a nice Cleric came by "think her name was Natty" but she was very understanding and tossed me a ress :) "TY AGAIN !"
Since I was already in W/L I ran over and picked up my spells. I decided that was enough silliness for 1 day and just hung out for the rest of the day.
Now before you think I was bummed out about Woushi or the naked run through Kael. I want you to know I had a smile on my face the whole time. It's days like that which bring back the true classic feel of EQ to me :) It was fun !!!
Hopefully Tonight I will get a chance to try quads at Ulthorks again.

This was a long EQ weekend for me. I really wanted to get through 40 and decided to grind however long it took. I started Saturday morning with barely 1 tick into the level. Since the Dwarfs in Butcher Block seem perma camped and almost no one camps the Kodiaks in Great Divide, I decided to focus my time there. Even getting 3 ticks per quad I knew it would be a haul. As expected the loot was horrid but the XP was constant.
About midday I did have a little Company as a guy named Skabnight came by to do his Bloodmaw turn in. We cleared to Bloodmaw, and I harmonied him. Skab did the turn in and nothing happened. Skabnight said he had done the quest a few times on multiple toons and never had it fail. I felt pretty bad for him because I know it sucks to have the turn in mob just eat your quest items. At least it wasn’t the Lodi piece! I don’t know if the failure was level based or not but I suspect so.
Saturday evening after I took a dinner break I saw a /OCC from a guy named Doomstealer saying he and a 40 Pally named Xattin were looking for more. I sent a tell saying I would be game :) “I really needed a break from Kodiak slaying at that point” We grouped up for a little giant and wolf slaughtering. “I actually raised my Dwarf faction to amiable with that group :)” Fun thing about P99, once we got grouped up and started chatting I found out that they both were former Emarr players ! Heck we even knew some of the same folks back in the day. They were nice enough to invite me into their Team Speak channel for the rest of the night.
Side note. Both Xattin and Doom are members of Anonymous. Every time I run into those folks I seem to have Good experiences. Between Bonecollector running me through to pick up my CS tooth, and hanging out With Xattin and Doom That guilds reputation with me is in high standing.
I finally Dinged 41 at about 10:30 that night. When we broke camp I had accomplished my weekend goal and made a couple new friends in the process!
Sunday was back to the grind. It was certainly nice to be out of hell and back to more than 1 blue per Quad on them :). Sunday evening I managed to ding 42 on the Kodiaks and Even at 42 I still get slightly more than a blue per quad. I’m not sure how much longer Kodiaks will be blue, but I plan on staying as long as I can.

I know it’s been a bit since my last update, but honestly there wasn't much to report. I have still been grinding on Kodiaks. I did get to group with my friends Xattin and Doom a bit, but mostly it’s been running quads at off hours to get within striking distance of leveling. I wanted to grind out 43 so I could finally get to my last 2 port spells "Wakening Lands and Cobalt Scar" at 44.
I finally did ding 44 on sunday. Now that’s a great feeling. I swear I was smiling as I edited my /ooc port message to read "Now porting to ALL Druid locations" !! I can’t tell you how many tells I have gotten while quading in Great Divide asking if I was available to port to WL or CS. I regularly had to explain that it was a 44 spell and I was not there yet. When I got close to dinging 44 I told folks if they would like to P/L me the last bit through 43 I would be happy to take them :) "No takers though LOL"
Once I dinged 44 I ran one more quad at the Kodiaks to see if the xp was still worth it. Unfortunately it wasn't. The XP dropped noticeably so it’s time to move on. I ran a quad at the outpost in Dreadlands on the Skelly's & they were doable. But one of them had nearly twice the HP of the others causing me to Dot Rot it down. This caused a smidge too much down time so again it was time to move on.
Next up I decided to do Walruses in EW. These are doable but again I found the XP isn’t what I had hoped. I ported to CS because I wanted to try my hands on Wyverns. As usual I pulled a single to see how things would go. “I always pull a single when I am trying a new area I'm not sure about”. I harmonied a pair of wyverns on the ledge and pulled one with snare. resist. recast snare... resist. Recast Snare resist....
umm.......
Gate
I finished up the night on one of my old favorite targets. Panthers in W/L. Honestly I love these guys, you have to keep your eyes open for priests, but you can pull them back to the wall for a standard kite or just pull a single back to the wall and root rot it. The best part about this is you can make really good plat while you hunt. Both by foraging Yew Leaves, and selling the hides. I made a little over 300 plat in just an hour using this method. Now while that doesn’t seem like much to some folks to me it is a big deal. I don’t really like charging folks for ports and now I have a viable alternative to that to make decent cash and start gearing up.
Anyway I'll be grinding through 44 and 45 this week. The goal is to try and get to 46 by the end of the weekend. If I can get there I think I just might be able to grind on the Wyverns in CS !!

Wow what a week!
Wednesday night I got invited to tag behind anonymous while they plowed through mobs in Kael. It was great fun tagging mobs and healing as much as I could "though honestly my heals probably weren't that helpful" We spent so much time in the arena I got myself to non KoS to Cov faction "Take that Woushi!" The best part is I know I am safe in CS for quading in the future.
My goal was to get through 45 and into 46 by the end of the weekend. I pretty much smashed that one :)
On Thursday I spent the entire day grinding walruses. This got me through 45 and partially into 46. I managed to pick up an ES vambs and that made things really efficient I was finishing Kites with 30% mana left. When pulling Walruses. I pulled with Es vambs ran them back towards Korrigan and snared. This way they were out of the way and would not gather ads while setting up my kite. It had the pleasant side effect of have the mobs all between 80%-90% health when I would start my quad. This meant less down time between kites!
On Saturday I dinged 47 and decided to try my hand out on Wyverns. Nope I’m still too low to quad them. While I can land snares and lightning Strike they simply have too many HP for my pathetic mana pool. I did notice that the Shell Collectors on the beach are Dark blue so I gave those a whirl. Let me tell you these guys are really light weights! They have very few HP’s and are quadable on the far right beach without too much difficulty. I did the Majority of 47 on them and made a decent amount of plat while doing it. I only stopped because I wasn’t ready to ruin my Otter faction yet. I Dinged 48 off the Walruses on Sunday.
So there you go. All of 44 to 48 done in just a few days. Now I just have to find a new hunting ground. I wanted to do the Spirocs everyone talks about but they were uber camped the last couple times I went over there. “And that’s a long run just to find out there are 4-6 people quading”. Maybe I will try the Skeletons in DL again /shrug. I am open to suggestions if anyone has any. I’m just looking for a quiet out of the way spot to get through 48 and into my 49 spells. Then things should really pick up !

It has been a while since my last update and I apologize.
I have been busy
I app'ed for Anonymous and have been going through the probie process learning how to redo thing that used to come so naturally to me "Raiding ect" I have been enjoying grouping a bunch and getting to know my new guild mates. They are a good bunch of folks and I have had a blast just chatting in T/S some nights :) I have 8-10 more days to go to find out if I made the guild :)
As far as leveling and gear goes
I spent a little time in the hole and was lucky enough the group awarded me the Withered BP. "big upgrade from the foremans tunic I was wearing"
I have quaded Wyverns in CS, Grinded on Geos in WL, and done the occasional cyclops in OOT. even managed to snag my first epic piece while i was there :)
Currently I'm sitting at 54 and know I should be in the bear pits, but honestly no clue how to get down there and I am a little worried about trying to follow someone down there and getting us both killed. I was hoping to do some solo work in Velious at least to lvl 56 for my Druid Velious guide, but honestly not much is available to camp. "I am open to suggestion for alternate leveling spots besides bear pits if anyone has any"
Anyway I have to keep this short. Sigh Work is always interfering with my Eq time.

For Lodi Shield and Dragon Totem.
The faction can be fixed by killing Ulthork in EW.
Alternatively, you can just harmony the Othmir near the quest NPC, including him. Then open trade window with the stuff, and invis yourself. When he cons indifferent with all the items in the trade window, turn in and you get your reward.
No need to faction when you're in an outdoor zone and the quest requires indifferent or less on a Druid. Just use Harmony + Invis to turn in, always check it cons indifferent before hitting accept and you're good to go.
Did you use a lumi staff for any of the velious quadding? I'm wondering how that will impact things. My Druid is currently 45 looking to break into 46 to play with the staff.

The lumi staff helps conserve mana, but with the amount of hit points Velious mobs have, it can be really time-consuming to use it compared to Lightning Blast (49 spell).
I'd say 46-48, it can replace your Lightning Strike spell, 49+ in Velious it's just a tiny mana-free nuke with a really long cast time.

only used Lumi staff to finish some quads I got unlucky resists on or ones I started with not ideal mana initially
the cast time is so long that you literally have to start it the second your quad gets into range or you will be dead before it goes off
I headed over to CS and started quadding wyverns using mainly lumi staff. Worked out pretty well. I didn't need to resnare anything so I was able to get 5 or 6 kites off without medding

Yeah, I'm not sure how people complain about the long cast time or low dmg of the Lumi. Your kites might be quicker with your own spells, but the medding period lasts well longer than a Lumi kite. I'd say with Lumi you are looking at 2.5 kites for every 1 using your own mana.
I personally liked to hybrid. On Wyv's I would cast 2 of my own AOE's, then Lumi them the rest of the way down. The ONLY reason, and i mean ONNLLYY reason you wouldn't want to use Lumi staff is if you're quadding in an area that is tight, and you can't get 10seconds out of range for the clicky.
