View Full Version : Game Mechanics: A Greedy Begger

He spawns just outside the gates at the docks, a little halfling guy. On live he always had a torch in his off hand, and when you gave him some money [any amount], he would follow you around and act as a pet, but you couldnt control him, like an enchanter pet.

He is there and otherwise does nothing else.

Any evidence this guy existed prior to velious? I never personally saw or used him :)

Should not exist. In classic beggars always had actual "names". There never was a beggar right by the docks.

Remember seeing him WAAY back. But that was around velious launch. Not sure if he's classic classic classic. :)

I remember killing him and going, "OH NO FACTION HIT!"

I thought you were talking about East Freeport docks, because there is also a greedy beggar standing there which shouldn't be there.

i remember an npc acting like that, although i can't confirm the name or anything..

I remember interacting with the greedy beggar with the very first character I ever rolled.
I distinctly remember is because I had also finally found the docks (I was trying to get off the continent). I ended up getting distracted by the beggar and managed to get myself killed by some goblins. (Of course I was still bound in Kelethin).

I decided to ignore the beggar from then on and also decided that I would wait a few more levels before I venture to distant lands again...

can confirm a greedy beger (halfling i beleive). He would be FD near the BB docks and if you gave him coin, he would act like an Ench pet. I can also confirm this was prior to Velious (though not exactly sure how far back he went).

Ah that's right, he was indeed FD by default. Sleeping I guess.

I remember this NPC but can not confirm he existed prior to Velious. I wouldn't see why they would have added him in Kunark or Velious as he never did anything special but follow you around. He was usually just outside the BB docks entrance, on right side of the path. Any unsuspecting newbie would walk to the docks and run into this fella if he was there.

a greedy beggar was there at least since Velious opened, because that's when I started playing on live, so if this server is open that far, then he should be there. He lies on his side near the entrance to the BBM docks until someone hails him then he follows them around like a puppy. He will take weapons and anything else that is offered to him and use it if he can. He assists in fights like a pet. Only one is ever up at a time, though, so if someone else has him then you have to wait for him to die and respawn before someone else can have him.

Guys I'm going to hazard a guess that the staff agrees with the classic evidence, but that this NPC has some very unique behavior (read: requires lots of special coding to get right), and they have much bigger fish they could use that same amount of time to fry.

I'm not saying not to bump (if they didn't want you to they'd say so themselves). I'm just saying that thinking like a dev, if it was me I would do this sort of bug in a "last round of fixes after all the 'real' work is done" patch ... and no amount of bumps would make me stop working on other bugs to sink a huge amount of time into this one NPC (and I say this to maybe save y'all the time and trouble of bumping).

I have put him in the next patch, but he needs a bit more development before his behavior is 100%

Apparently bumping does work! I've learned my lesson: I will no longer discourage bumpring of bug threads (in fact, it seems like I should encourage it).

FWIW, I used to lead teams of programmers (doing far more serious things than games; among other things I helped build an application for hospitals and labs to share genomic sequencing data for precision medicine).

Now though I just teach programming online; more time for EQ that way.

Please stop shitting up the bug forums with how you feel/ RL information. You can post in era evidence to support/deny said bugs which would actually help the server.

Woohoo! I think we could all learn something from a greedy beggar. Top priority over all those boring end-game dragons and wizard encounters!

I made one comment in a bug forum, which I then freely admitted was a mistake, and then one other to defend myself against your hostile and completely out-of-place (for the bug forum) comments. Get over yourself.
