I've been playing here for around a week and wanted to give new players joining a tip for window appearance. There is a post or two that has similar information, but I believe they may be archived/hard to find. I know when I started, I refused to play until I got an appropriate appearance, and it took several hours to get right. Here's hoping the post may save you some time.
The client runs excellently in windowed mode, which allows easy access to other tasks including the forums and wiki. You can still run windowed mode, and have the appearance of a full screen.
Steps:
1.) Find your windows option to auto hide the taskbar. For windows xp/7, right click the taskbar and check 'auto hide'. This hides the taskbar unless the mouse is over it.
2.) Locate eqclient.ini in your Everquest directory, find the lines WindowedWidth and WindowedHeight. Change these to fit your desktop resolution.
3.) In eqclient.ini, find WindowedModeXOffsetand WindowedModeYOffset. These allow you to adjust the placement of the window, and can be used to hide the window caption. Try a ModeYOffset of -20 to start with, and XOffSet of 0.
4.) Depending on your windows theme settings, OS, etc, you may need to change 2 options for windows appearance. On Windows 7, search for 'Change windows colors and metrics'. On any windows OS, you are looking to change the size of Active Window Border, and Border Padding. Set Active Window Border to 1, and Border Padding to 0.
5.) Launch the client (you do not need to use the .bat file, you can create a shortcut to eqgame.exe, go to the properties of the shortcut and add 'patchme' to the target field).
6.) If you are not in windowed mode, hit ALT+Enter to switch. You do not have to login to see if your settings for YOffset and XOffset are correct. If you can still see the window caption, or can see tiny borders on the side, make adjustments 1 or 2 points at a time to YOffset or Xoffset in the eqclient.ini file, save your changes and relaunch the client. The goal is to not have any border on the top, or sides, with the window caption completely hidden. There will still be a border at the bottom.
7.) (optional) In Windows, even with the hide taskbar option enabled, there will still be a tiny line visible. I use a free and small program called Hide Taskbar to get rid of it. It can be downloaded from http://www.thewindowsclub.com/hide-taskbar-windows-7-hotkey. The Windows Club website has another one on their page called Taskbar Eliminator that supports other versions of Windows, but I have not tried it. For Hide Taskbar, the shortcut to show/hide is CTRL+ESC.
Now, if you set a black background on your desktop, you should have a nice looking appearance for your EQ window.
