With class experience penalties going away, pretty sure I know the answer ... but is the pet experience penalty still in effect ?

Class penalties and pet exp penalties don't go hand in hand.

Your pet used to be considered a hybrid because it could self-ds and melee, so it took a 140% xp split. Now it takes a 100% split over 50% damage.

There was no patch note for pet xp penalty, so i assume it's still in effect. Everybody has a way around it, so it's only inconvenient. The easiest and best solution in my view is simply grouping. Yesterday i had a group with 4 pets, it was really nice. Highest in group was 24 and we were doing some level 30 mobs. Our mage was "tanking" with his pet, he said he felt like a cleric :).

Mage tanking by committee actually sounds pretty cool

I've always felt the pet experience penalty was akin to robbery. My favorite way to play a mage is to just heal the pet instead of nuking. Even at lvl 60 I solo this way. But because my play style is relaxed I get half the exp.

I think that was abolished, but in a way later expansion. Honestly I do not recall but something in my head is reminding me that pet xp loss was removed at some point of time.

It got added because of AFK necros farming exp with the 49 pet in old world after Kunark came out. Not sure when they removed it but I don't remember it being an issue with my Beastlord in Luclin.

Yeah pretty sure it's completely unclassic. But the dev crew loves unclassic pet changes more than classic ones.

I believe nilbog added it because those dirty mages were afk exping at gornit in oot during vanilla.

also, it will never go away. other than the hybrid thing

If it's there to combat afk XPing why not make it so that the pet master has to do lets say at least 10% of the damage? You could even award zero xp if thats not the case, problem solved. This way anybody could still use their favourite tactic and AFKers would not get half, but zero xp.

Even 1% damage would make sense.

Just out of curiousity, has any mage leveling from 1 to 49 ever parsed fire pet damage that includes the DS?

I am curious on how much that DS does.

Example:

50% pet dmg cuts your xp in half. If pet DS does an average of 25% damage throughout the entire fight, that means you only need to beat that other 25% dmg it's actually doing.

DS damage is global, doesn't get attributed to the PC or pet afaik. That's how it works with Druid PLing at least.

Well no.

If your pets DS did 25%, that means of the remaining 75% you would need to do 37.5% to beat your pet's 37.5%.

If your pets DS did 50%, that means of the remaining 50% you would need to do 25% percent to beat your pet's 25%.

Thanks for the correction. I wasn't thinking remainder.
