putting music on itunes

it's been awhile since i updated an iphone or ipod with music, I use to just drag all of my downloaded music into itunes and upload to the ipod, now I can't figure out how to get the music in itunes. Itunes wont upload it when I go to file>upload, and I can't drag and drop.

How do I get around purchasing the music through itunes?

Do the following steps:

>connect your device to the computer and wait until the icon appears.

>then go to (http://www.dissertationcapital.com) file>devices (If you're using iTunes for Windows and cannot see the menu bar. To make it turn on, click on the Menu icon at the upper-left corner of iTunes and then from the pop-up menu, select Show Menu Bar. Now you can visible menus)

>choose transfer purchases from <device_name>
