The Elder Scrolls:Arena (1994) played a similar sound when you leveled. DnD warriors of eternal sun (1993) precludes it

Yeah, after a while they started saying 'whoosh' tho didn't they? I quit playing after getting my lvl 60 before the first Rag kill ever.

Actually Elder Scrolls Arena level-up sound was the sound used for quest-turn ins - I believe.

I definitely heard the ding in an episode of Doctor Who. I'm trying to remember which episode exactly but it was one of the ones with Christpher Eccelston and Billie Piper.

Probably a stock sound they didn't have to pay any rights for.

Welcome to the world wide web of public domain sound effects.
As for the source, we'll probably never know. :\

All media use audio from the same set of un-licensed sounds.
You know that scream of a guy falling off a cliff every movie from the 60s till now use? Gunshots, horse clopping, etc.
Saves a bit of money and no one really notices it.

The DING sound (and many other sounds like bears/other animals etc.) all come from sound libraries that companies pay to use. I've heard EQ bear roars in a bunch of shows. Heard the ding several other places.

That's called the willheim scream I believe. My wife and I try to be the first person to point it out in every movie we watch.

I heard the DING EQ sound watching some Biology video about 13 years ago, I just assumed the producer of the video played EQ and I smiled a little inside.

I remember hearing the ding sound in an episode of some cop show about a murderous rpg playing special needs kid. Showed a clip of him playing some game and the ding sound went off a couple times. Pretty sure it was actually a p99er being filmed in real time.

I too hear the generic "spooky forest" background in shows, along with the bear agro sound, and the screeching falcon...
Always think of butcher block for the forest background loop. (Heh. Forest loop.)

back around 1990 my friends and i used to play DnD. i can recall us making a ding sound (we would just make with our voices) when we lvl'd...one friend of mine had a gong he would hit when he lvl'd.
i was the first in our grp to think it up...so i more or less invented the ding. it caught on at our hobby shop where we played and it spread. no, i'm not joking. if you played DnD in the late 80s in the greater NYC area you probably remember seeing folks doing this all over the place. i'm more than certain that one of the devs picked it up from us.

I actually recall one of the developer announcements a long time back mentioning that the ding noise was inspired by someone along the name of fastboy. Small world...
