Hey there guys, so I've just recently been trying to get into (back into) Everquest. I played it as a kid when I was really young, I want to say I was around 10 years old back then. I played here and there and probably made it to about level 30ish, but I still never got the real classic everquest experience.

Well here I am, and I really want to get into this game. I've made a Barbarian Shaman (IGN Versza) and it's both fun and frustrating. I don't know what I'm supposed to do, I explored and found my guildmaster, trained sense heading, put on the gear I was given, but every mob outside either wants to kill me or does kill me.

Am I doing this wrong?

Welcome to EQ! Everfrost is one of the most unforgiving starting areas. If you need to (re)learn the ropes, it might be overwhelming.

The easiest starting areas for me are paineel (evil erudites), misty thicket, qeynos and freeport, followed by greater faydark and butcherblock.

But i would advice you to stick to your barb shaman and just learn the hard way. Nothing wrong with dying a lot at low levels where you still do not lose xp. You will learn very fast to respect the environment, knowledge that you will need anyway at higher levels. Also you will learn navigating in hard mode. Try to find one or two other lowbies, things get much easier if you stick together. Look out for those pesky solist skellies, they will kill you pretty fast.

If you feel that you need a change of scenery, try to get a SOW and make a run thru blackburrow, get a bind close to qeynos and hunt in qeynos hills or blackburrow. Way easier than everfrost, but not as "cool" :).

So I should just continue trying to kill these spiderlings then? It is a little frustrating but finally leveling up my first time really felt worth it, and thank you for the welcome by the way!

As far as i remember the polar bears are the best mobs to hunt if you want nice loot (http://wiki.project1999.com/A_polar_bear_cub). Look at the loot table and the quests you can resolve with them. Quite nice for such low mobs.

But in order to get xp, just kill whatever you see.

Always "con" the mobs before you attack then, stick with blue ones and fight them on the wall! At lvl 5-6 maybe there are static spawns of Gnolls just outside Blackburrow. Its great once you learn it, save the fangs for turnin in Qeynos.

Thanks for the replies, I suppose I'll just have to put in some more effort and be more careful.

I was in your position 3 days ago. Everfrost is like, the hardest newbie zone there is.

Until level 2, you only want to kill Decaying Skeletons, Gnoll Pups and ice goblin whelps. Anything else will hurt you.

Spiders poison, so don't kil them. After that you can do polar bear pups. Take their ruined bear pelts and turn each 1 into a piece of armor via tailoring. You WILL notice the difference in tankiness.

This is not easy mode, its EQ. It is a real grind, it's EQ. Go slow, make friends, and become very familiar with the wiki, specific to these servers. Project1999 Wiki (http://wiki.project1999.com/Main_Page)

Yea, if it was easy you would not want to be here. :p At 5 try to get to Blackburrow. Once you can get a few spells and a better weapon it will be really easier to stay alive.

Big trouble is it is VERY hard for you to get your spells anywhere but Halas as a Barb. So I would try to sell some loot you get and buy as many spells as you can there before leaving. I think there is a quest to get spells free in Halas at the Guildmasters.

Barbarian's are the worst shamans and have the worst starting areas. You will always need to go back there for spells too so as a beginner you won't be able to leave.

Ogre/Trolls have such an easy starting area. Iksars do as well.

If you're non stop killing mobs, you're making progress.

If you're wandering around looking for quests/lore & sight seeing, you aren't.

Which is more fun? Let the player in you decide.

If you can find a friendly druid to come buff you up and damage shield you for awhile, you'll blow through those first 5 levels really quickly.
Also there is a fantastic quest you may want to do:
http://wiki.project1999.com/Tribunal_Symbol_Quests
This will get you a free +WIS necklace that is a clicky summon magical hammer by simply running an errand.
It is a long run through your Everfrost, the very top of Blackborrow (takes like 15 seconds to run to the zone line), run through Qeynos Hills and into the city.
It sounds hard, but really this run can be done at level 1 if you know how to avoid being seen.
It's well worth the trip to get that magic weapon since you may not see one for awhile or until you raise the money or some nice person gives you one.
you may want to make this run at level 5 when you get the Gate spell so you only have to make it a one-way trip. :)
Another bit of advice, should you need a ride, you can call for the guild Dial-a-Port.
/who all dial
Usually they like you to be near a druid ring for easy pick up and delivery, but sometimes a nice bored druid or wizard will come all the way to you. At low levels, very few of them will charge you. :)

level 1-10 in eq is like a game in itself. Unlike modern games, where things happen fast so people don't get bored, level 1-10 if you are just starting out with nothing and learning the ropes, is actually pretty hard.

One of the best design choices original eq made, imo.

One of the root causes of my Altitis is the fact that I really enjoy the process of leveling 1 - 10.
I like starting out in a strange city with nothing but a crude weapon and possibly a spell or two and seeing what I can accomplish thru my own efforts and the generosity of other players by the time i reach level 10.
I have a strict personal no twinking rule so I almost never do any item or plat transfers between my characters. I do my best to treat each one as if it were my only character.

I posted on the bug forum about the problems with not enough level 1 mobs in the Halas/Everfrost newbie area. They know about the problem and have promised to fix it.

This newbie area was one of the best in all of Norrath; now it's the worst.

I feel your pain. It's very hard to start a new barbarian as most of the mobs are yellow to a level 1 barb. I got lucky as someone buffed me and gave me a fine steel weapon.

Made a new barbie shaman last night just to check this out. Sat around for fifteen minutes waiting for a decaying skellie to wander by. The ONLY mob I saw in all that time was the Vengeful Lyricist. Not even so much as a gnoll pup or goblin whelp. The Vengeful seemed to be camping the area. He just wandered back and forth accross the newbie area while I sat at the end of the path from Halas. I thought about pulling him to the guards, but wasn't sure I could outrun him.

I remember on Live that the Vengeful were semi-rare spawns. Here they seem to be up all the time.

I agree with you 100%! Here's a link to the thread where we are discussing this problem:

You may want to add your observations to the thread. :)
