Ping and PvP

I have a ping oscillating between 130 and 150ms. I made a lowbie rogue and jousted a bit, found it hard to land backstabs and generally found the whole experience frustrating.

Which classes should I NOT play at all, from the PvP standpoint, considering the ping?

Which classes SHOULD I play? Obviously wizard / druid, anything else? What if I really want to play some kind of melee?

you'll learn to adjust.. but obviously a caster would be easier

I play with 360ms. Don't really notice the ping on a caster. But I can't hit people for shit on a melee.

I kinda wanna play a rogue but years of playing Quake taught me that when you have a 150 ping and you're dueling someone who has a 30 ping, you'll need a VERY big skill edge in order to prevail.

You can still play anything you want with that MS, but unless you really apply yourself to have pinpoint timing (which anyone who figures out your movement patterns can essentially block if they count your backstab cooldown)...then I wouldn't suggest rogue.

Had to deal with that ping the entire time I played on this server and it becomes incredibly frustrating not being able to land backstab rounds not only due to your ping, but the ping differential between you and the person you are fighting. It's actually to land backstabs on people from the east coast than people on the west coast because stutter stepping from both clients leads to a ridiculous variance in the hit boxes.

If you're really dead set on a melee, you could still easily play a monk due to their high avoidance and regen. Or even a warrior because of how tanky they are and if you land a kick it's basically a guaranteed melee round for you.

If you choose to play a caster, play something that isn't super squishy that will die in a single duelist from a rogue, as latency screws you on this account as well. Can't count the amount of times my wizard has been oneshot by an east coast rogue when I really felt like I shouldn't have been getting hit.

I still suggest playing whatever class you really enjoy most.

But as colgate suggested caster easier. Really though...pick favorite class and hope things get better or you get better at compensating.

130-150? lol. try jousting/pulling raids with 600-1k ping on the regular.. the life of an expat.

Truthfully, man, you can get by on virtually any class if you get creative with your movement/tactics. Some have a smaller margin of error but you can still put in work. I play my friends toons and even with my aforementioned ping issues, can land bs fairly consistently. Predictability will ruin you on any melee at any ping.

Just play whatever you want, if you want to go melee and find rogue too difficult, as some others mentioned a war, sk or monk might be easier. SK is great vs mediocre players. Monk allows you some leeway because of high avoidance. Wars, well, they're warriors and kick stun.

I've been screwing around on an enchanter lately, it's quite fun and offers a distinctly different play style than most other casters (if you don't want to wiz / druid). Allows you to pull some stuff out of your ass but can be frustrating at times when certain things go awry.

I bounce between 120-140. I remember having rezynn with me in ts on the pbe and asking him his ping, and somehow he had lower ping in sweden. On some late nights with sub 100 pop my ping will drop into the low 100's.

I'm running about 120. I find that some people I just cannot hit using my normal timing. If I'm in pvp more than 1v1 and I just fail to hit someone I'll swap targets and land every joust.

It's not just your ping but the Ping of your opponent that will determine your joust timing. At 120 I'm not the best but I do OK as a rogue.

Over 150 and I wouldn't touch a melee, though.

You can still get a lot of kills, just stay away from zone line hugging rouges or monks that zone fast.



Ping does make a difference for sure, it can be overcome. It's like having a 30% handicap.
West coast players are so far superior to the rest of the planet though, it would not be fair to have it any other way in pvp.

im at 150ms and i do notice some lag when i try to joust, like 0.5 or 0.7 delay (yeah i play simracing games and thats a lot and can be noticed ), tho in eq i found that u have to be over ur opponent to land the hit, if u try to overcome that delay ull end missin more, so u just have less range to work really. u can adjust, anyway im still bad at jousting, im gettin better so i think ping is not that big difference, this is not a shooter where ping really matters imo. dont take my word fro granted in this topic tho, just a personal opinion

Salt and I have the same issue. It is (I have noticed) varied more heavily on your enemies ping to land jousts.

I was pretty consistent when Salt and I would toe to toe. But was having the same problems Gardur/Salt explained. Being literally inside of someones pixelated asshole, and not being able to land a single swing on them.

So if you just learn to deal with the deficit, you should be fine on MOST targets. I only notice on some euros or aussies does the hit box become non-existent half the time.

You become accustomed to your ping. I've played with 30 MS, and when I've had to use VPN's I went up to 150-200. After a bit you don't even think about it.

Any of the hybrids will work out better for you. If you suck at jousting you can just do something else. Paladin heal and support, SK gets HT which is easy to land or you can cast some spells for DPS, ranger can keep distance and use range/spells.

You will still be able to melee casters and can work up to being a good jouster over time.

If you suck at jousting and pick a rogue it will be the toughest learning curve but in the end you will figure it out.

Enchanter is rough til 29ish area and then a whole new class comes out to be honest. I quit like 3 times from 1-24 cause I had no gear or money. Once I got some cheap cha gear and hit 29 it was a breeze.
Also enchanter is deadly in pvp from 40-60.

Wasn't the Rogue BotB using the old hit boxes though? They were a lot bigger making jousting cake to what it is now.

Yes that's true, it was using the old hit boxes. That being said, I dueled most of the good rogues that were around during the new hit boxes and already stated how I fared against them all :). Had a huge issue with gnome rogues however so that result was inconsistent on player. Slaughtered noscucow on a regular basis due to how bad he was, but got stomped by mornin playing Littlegyno.

1-3 against Chuck
4-3 (ish) against Reebz
4-0 against Ragnaros
3-1 against Lite
0-1 against Deluxee (was right after I got back and was beyond awful)
