View Full Version : Anywhere I can find a breakdown of population by class?

Hello, P99. Just started here after having played live for years. Before I start committing a ton of time to a new character, I was wondering which classes are the most needed/ least common? I know it really just comes down to "play whatever class you enjoy", and with a 1k+ population there's bound to be a lot of everything, but I'm curious nonetheless.
Also, is the hybrid xp penalty still in effect here? I seem to remember there being a period after Velious was released where the penalty was still in effect.

I did not find a statistic with a quick look, but you can easily make your own. Use
/who all cleric count
in order to see how many clerics are there at this time. I think it does not count /anon players (not sure about that), so certain classes, especially clerics druids and wizards might be underrepresented.
Hyprid XP penalty is still in effect, but should be dropped in a few months time.
If you want to group a lot, i would recommend a cleric or a tank. Enchanter is nice as well, but i think there are a lot around, same for shamans.
That said, grouping is not so hard at low levels. Even my necromancer is grouping pretty frequently. At high levels people get a lot more picky though.

Melee DPS is always in demand - There are more spots in a group for DPS than anything else as well. With that said, there are a lot of melee DPS on the server for that reason. If you are talking about 50+ grouping, the utility classes take it in the shorts because they are not "essential" - that would be wiz, dru, brd, nec, rng - these 5 classes have a tougher time grouping than the other classes - mainly because the roles they fill are better fill by other classes and the XP penalty is real at these levels. This is why getting a guild and making friends is so important. I group with a necro all the time because I like him, not because his class is uber.

This is sound advice for anyone playing on p99.
Make your own groups

I have not seen a up to date class thingy in 3 years or more. I can bet it is still Druid, Shaman, Enchanter, Necro, Monk, Cleric probably in that order or close. :p

Thank you all for the replies. I'm actually considering maybe a druid to begin with. Something that isn't terribly gear dependent and has some measure of solo ability.

I guess that gives me time to accumulate some wealth before making a paladin :O

In my observations, if it's Blue the break down is like:
10% Druid
10% Bard
10% Mage
10% Necromancer
10% Monk
10% Rogue
10% Cleric
10% Enchanter
05% Warrior
05% Shaman
03% Shadow Knight
02% Wizard
03% Paladin
02% Ranger
*Note Blue has about 800 during off peak hours and up to 2000 during prime time (EST).
On Red:
20% Druid
20% Shaman
20 %Monk
10% Rogue
10% Wizard
05% Mage
05% Shadow Knight
02% Cleric
02% Necromancer
02% Warrior
02% Paladin
02% Ranger
*Note there are only like 100 - 250 players on Red on off peak hours with spikes to about 300 or so during prime time (EST).

Why would you say wizard is so under represented? On blue at least.

Just simple observation doing /who all wiz, that and grouping, adventuring, etc. I hardly see wizards.
Like I said, this is my opinion on the break down, other player's mileage may vary. I mainly play M-F between 7PM-11PM EST.

You'll see a lot more hybrids once the hybrid penalty is lifted in a few months :D

Nothing recent.
The last official (done by mining the database) thing I read is about 2 years old, from Ephi. It's on the Wiki, here:
http://wiki.project1999.com/Project1999:About
About a year ago, a player did many, many /whos and came up with this:
http://p1999pop.dmsimard.com/db/Classes
Neither system gives a perfect picture though... but probably close enough.

Why would you say wizard is so under represented? On blue at least.
Based on 55 levels of playing my wizard alt, wizards are a rough class to find groups with, so people need to like to solo for many levels or have PLing available to them to make much headway as a wizard. Other than being a portbot of course, but even so druids are more group friendly as healers / buffers etc. so that is the path of least resistance for portbots. Hence it's not an overly popular class despite it's utility in the high end game (which most people don't experience.) Plus it seems like Verant hated the class (e.g. no buyable port spells at Velious launch!)
That being said I love playing my wizard!

A lot more warriors than I figured there would be. I actually don't ever see all that many. I hardly ever see paladins and rangers. Lately, I have been seeing a lot more SKs though. Hell, my guild has like, four or five who are mains.

Most of the Bards you see are Tunnel Mules in EC. There are like 13 bards on the whole damn server worth inviting. Most are One Song Wonders AFK half the time. :o

Did a few who all counts just now.
Sorry if I missed a class!
bard 69
cleric 108
druid 166
enchanter 101
magician 54
monk 99
necromancer 117
paladin 32
ranger 32
rogue 69
shadow knight 54
shaman 123
warrior 55
wizard 51
/who all count gave a result of 1128, which more or less equals the above.
Server displayed 1276 online, so I guess / all count includes anon. I suspect the difference in numbers was due to 150 people AFKing at log on screen?
Note if I logged onto my SK instead of my War to do this SK would have been more SK than War on! I guess SK being an unpopular tank class is a myth!
Ranger and Pal kinda rare still.

Thanks for the count :D
I always felt like SK was a better tank up until endgame personally. They didn't have to rely on finding decent proc weapons like warriors, and had plenty of HP assuming you were an ogre or troll.

Here was a couple of weeks of /whos from a few months ago. Haven't had time to play but still check out the boards every couple of days.
Edit
PS I played a wizard as my main and got up to 35 before I had to break because of pesky real life. I enjoyed it and up to that level didn't have a problem getting groups. However I think wizzies get a bad name because of bad wizzies. Don't open up on mobs til tank has aggro/wait til mob is at 50 percent generally, assist!, don't blow all your mana on one or two mobs, conserve mana so you can really blow the hell out of the stuff when you need to, use CC liberally, don't afk randomly....be a nice guy.
Good luck and enjoy, P99 is great. I will be hopping back in at some point when rl allows :)

back in classic EQ for levels 30-40 I found it hard to find a group that could see the value of an SK Tank or even as OT. Poor player information being spread at the time. In The Overthere I faced rejection daily even when I was over the asking level, groups would rather sit around waiting for a War to log in then chance having an SK tank. Wonder how the stats would skew if only counted those over 30. Surprised by the numbers, rogues count seems high and warriors low.

Odd how different behavior could be on different classic servers. On mine at least (erollisi marr) most groups preferred hybrid tanks for their agro and utility. I don't remember xp penalties being known or an issue at that time.
On this server you'll definitely find some resistance due to xp penalty.

Monks are somewhere in the middle, and if you take the time to properly gear them as you level, They are extremely fun and make great soloers
