View Full Version : Viability of a Nec/Monk duo?

Hey guys, a couple of friends and I are gonna start playing together soon. The third guy is undecided, might play Shaman, but honestly I'm not sure he'll stick around. That leaves me as a Nec and my other buddy as a Monk. I've tried searching google but I don't see too many mentions of this duo. How viable is it? We're both most likely gonna roll Iksar. It may suck not having buffs, regen, sow, slow, or teleports, but as long as this duo works reasonably well together we'd like to play these classes. Thoughts?

It will work great as long as you have room for snare/fear, mostly outdoors. In the harder dungeons you will need a healer at least. Of course necro CAN heal, just not so fast/efficient as is needed.

On the plus side, if things go south, you can both FD. That will make things much safer. As iksars, you already have decent regeneration, just xp will be a bit slower.

I agree with Pyrion.

I think Monk/Necro is a good combo, works best in outside zones to dot/snare/fear, with monk and pet dpsing. Very little need to heal, and chances are the by the time the Monk needs a heal he can just Mend.

Inside zones, will be interesting, but like Pyrion said, FD. I think against single blue mobs, the monk could tank, pet dps, necro dots or nukes with lifetaps, and use what hp transfer spell they have to the monk when needed.

Interesting duo!
Necro is an extremely versatile class, this will give him a chance to fill multiple roles: dps, healing, cc.

59 monk here - Necro/Monk is a great duo!!! Probably my favorite class to group with behind shamans. Your duo will depend on gearing the monk though, so prepare to fork over your cash to him if your both new to the server.

It works great! If the monk isn't very well geared stick to fear kiting or aggro kiting (easy w/ FD), otherwise just straight up let the monk tank and heal, have the monk feign and let pet soak damage when he gets low on hp. The shadowbond line is very efficient (you take only half the damage you heal, and lifetaps more than make up for that).

Lower levels, a Necro is not too shabby with healing. There will be X amount of down time, but even at lower levels the Necro will have to med compared to a really high level Necro who is pretty much non stop as a Iksar. :)

It would work good. I wouldn't even use fear, just snare and disease cloud for agro less mana than fear, and monk can FD off agro. Works even better is Kiting outside with a druid with snare and flame lick. Flame lick no mana but intense agro so you can just run around while melee kicks ass. Also can animal charm with druids even more dps

The downside to aggro kiting is you can't med to get mana to DPS/lifetap.

I did agro kiting with a druid on a rogue in OT in late 30s 40s and I could get a full level before having to med. Using the right spells you don't use much mana

Yea I'm not saying it's mana intensive to aggro kite. I'm saying you could've potentially have been leveling faster with panic animal/snare/dots + medding.

Necros have a variety of fears that go from very little mana to a lot of mana depending on duration. I prefer lower level fear/shorter duration/less mana because you have plenty of time to recast when it runs back to you. Or just get the fear staff from Kaesora.

Being a monk, my only issue with that is this...A life lesson ive learned over many trials.
A slow monk is an unhappy monk.

I just recently leveled up with a friend to 54 on red with this duo. I the necro, he the monk.

We found it to be very effective and constant xp.

We did:
Warsliks(giants)>LOIO(sarnaks)>FM(giants)>OOT(specs)>LOIO(gills)>OOT(furries) we scattered in Dalnir along the way for crescent drops.

Took us about a week of casual play (red bonus) as we very rarely had to call med breaks or timeouts. We could constantly fear kite forever.

The monk was in rags and was using that 23/28 2hb.

and on red server how many times were you killed? 0?Crushbone>Unrest>Mistmoore>LGuk>KC is the preferred progression for new players in rags seeking to be pk'd.

Otherwise, few to no deaths is very likely.

Didn't see much if any pvp in the kunark zones. A little in oot but few were in range to 30's.

If you venture beyond unrest and mistmore you only bump into other people leveling and never auper twinked deathtouching rogues.
