Ahoy!

Figured I'd ask here since my search didn't find an answer.
I just recently started on RED (last Staurday) and was wondering:
- Is there a zone where a lvl1 is safe? I'd like to have a mule to try and trade plat from blue to red to get something better than fine steal weapon but would rather not get ganked upon making the trade.
- I haven't seen one yet but is there a trading hub on red? guess not since OOC seems to be used for that specifically?

thanks in advance!

Yeah the trading hub is the NFP bank. I don't think the zone has level 1 protection anymore but that doesn't scare many people. You can go through the door and stand behind the bankers if you want a little protection while trading.

At level 1 nobody is going to touch you in NFP. No yellow text alert or anything among other things.

I think lvl 1s are safe in all cities, even though system message doesn't say so.

There IS lvl 1 protection in freeport. You can't attack or be attacked at that level.

100% sure some level 1 protection exists because I made a level 1 character to kill Popcornx in Felwithe and when you attack nothing happens.

there is level 1 protection in most, if not all, starting cities.

Going to piggyback my own personal noob question here, I did not do PvP on live so I have no idea how anything works and the FAQ was more play nice policy than anything else.

PvP related deaths:
- Do you lose experience? What if I am dying to a mob and a player? e.g. Can someone kill me midfight with a mob and I'll lose experience?
- Do you lose plat or items upon PvP related death, is the winner able to loot items off your corpse? I seem to remember that being a thing. Maybe I'm crazy.

it depends who gets the final blow that finishes you off. if a mob gets the killing blow, then you lose exp just like a normal PVE death on blue. if a player gets the killing blow then you wont lose any exp but they get to loot all coin off your corpse (only coin, no items) - so keep your plat in the bank! also unlike blue, on red if you die to environmental factors you will NOT lose xp - drowning, lava, falling, etc. so those are the best way to go :)

Thank you for the timely answer!

Honestly the thing dissuading me the most from Red has been the thought of losing items to players, but if it's just cash that's just par for the course.

Perhaps I'll have to start a fresh alt on there for funsies. Are there any classes that aren't recommended for someone new to Red?

I'd either go something with some fairly straightforward pvp mechanics (druid/wizard) where you'll find some success in 1v1 fights or pick up a support role (cleric/shaman/enchanter) where you can watch and learn from others...knowing that if you die, particularly as a cleric, that you weren't expected to win a fight with that well geared monk that ran at you and started pounding away.

Casters are easy because they don't need gear. Rogues, monks, tanks are fun and useful but it really helps to have something other than a fine steel weapon to hit things with, plus the lack of a magic weapon can really slow you down in somewhere like City of Mist when you get there.

Pick what you like though, try a few different options...and don't be afraid to engage in pvp - you'll never get better if you don't practice. I need more practice ;)

PM me if you get some plat together and want some basic resist gear or stat gear made up, I'll do it for cheap <3

basic resist gear

I'll experiment between Shaman and Wizard. Try something new since I usually play melee in MMO style games.

You also bring up the question of resist gear. Now on blue I hardly if ever carry resist gear - even to raids (Sorry clerics). However, it seems that for Red this is much more important to not just carry around but wear regularly. Is it fairly common to keep a good mix of resist and stat gear, maybe even resist buffs, on you at all times?

Thanks to everyone for the good advice and answers thus far, it has been useful! (Sorry for hijacking your post Nanjiro )

Does this apply to Harm Touching yourself? Someone told me that doing this means your leaderboard stats aren't affected, but I didn't think to ask about the XP loss.

unless something changed, that acts as a PVE death (takes an XP hit and requires a rez)

but another way to get the no-side-effect death (like drowning/environmental) is to un-equip HP gear when you are low on health. eg: unequipping an 80 hp ring when you only have 50 hp left.

Yeah can't hurt, MR gear is most people's priority afaik... even if it's just to fill empty slots there's a MR necklace and wrists.
