View Full Version : One thing I've learned from Velious release: Nobody gives a shit
Four years of Kunark killed Red99. Not even Velious could bring it back. Maybe they'll get teams right after Empire gets through beta testing Velious.

Wot? Op Obv. a mad person who isn't in <Empire>.
Haven't played in two years so I give less of a shit than most. But if they were hoping that Velious would bring the server back, you have your answer. I still think teams is troll and I doubt they do a cyclical server, even though they talked about it after I posted the idea. If I'm wrong and they're really going to do more servers (or another server ... I'd play on a new blue server) then I hope Empire and whatever blue guilds do a great job of beta testing Velious. Ain't mad at Empire ... Gongshow's stream was great.
But for dumb shits who make posts like yours, the line forms to the left.

The jist I get is that most of the top tier guilds competition has a history of being bad at politicking and diplomacy.
How many guilds find themselves on the wrong side of the big dogs and unable to enjoy content? All of them, and some for different reasons than others.
I am not sure what hand the latest crop of players can play when they recruited most of Empire's blacklist, etc.
Just saying OP's outlook seems based on the above consistent mistake made over and over again.

Ain't mad at Empire ... Gongshow's stream was great.
Then you know the state of the server isn't Gongshow's fault. I have never seen him unreceptive to making decisions that would improve the health of the server.
He's the best leader the emulator projects have ever had, possibly even better than Rexx (memory is a bit hazy on the Heresy days).
Not sure which mistake you're referencing, but I can respond to other bits of your post.
Factors which played into the stagnation of Red99:
1. Holocaust ban
This sent a message to the player base that Rogean was not ok with high end competition that might interfere with the top guild's ability to sit atop the server unchallenged for two years while running an RMT ring that Rogean et al were perfectly aware of.
Who wants to compete after Rogean sent that message?
2. Four years of Kunark
Not complaining ... it is what it is. I contributed jack shit to the thousands of hours of development it took to get to this point. When I posted on Reddit that Daybreak Games should hire the P99 staff, pay them for their invested development and run commercial, live P99 servers, I was actually being sincere. Yes, I was also taking the opportunity to troll the P99 staff for allowing Nizzar to run an RMT ring for two years, but my sentiment was nonetheless sincere.
Look at how the new TLP servers have turned out, with level 25 mages killing dragons. When Daybreak acquired EQ, they layed off most of the development staff. They simply can't afford to duplicate what P99 has done. It seems like an obvious solution to me ... let the P99 staff get paid for their work, sign a contract that allows them to continue running their free servers and put a P99 server on the live log in list.
I don't know if you've seen the subscription numbers for the current TLP servers, but I would expect a live P99 server to draw 5-10k subs for the first few months, which would make Daybreak potentially $75,000 plus a month for anywhere from six months to five years.
3. The Crowfall (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/crowfall/crowfall-throne-war-pc-mmo/description) conundrum
Not sure if you're following the development of Crowfall but I posted a thread in main server chat talking about how they solved the fundamental flaw of MMORPG's: the flaw of permanence. If you watch the intro video for Crowfall, they talk about how MMO's are like a game of Risk that lasts years. It becomes clear over time that one person is the winner. If there's no mechanic for the game to reset, then it stagnates. It eventually becomes fun only for that one person (representing the dominant guild in an MMO), and then eventually isn't fun for that person/guild when the rest of the audience leaves.
So what I proposed was a cyclical P99 server where you do three months of classic/kunark/velious then wipe it and start over. Rogean seemed to like the idea as he discussed it in a Sirken stream, proposing further that they could copy the characters onto the live server at the end of the cycle and prior to the wipe, so that you never actually lose your characters.
On a server like that, with a fully developed and tested velious at the end of it, the end game guild politics would be completely different.

What? Crowfall, that funded at $1.7 million after Brad McQuaid couldn't raise 800k? Or a cyclical P99 server that Rogean already discussed on a Sirken stream?

I don't see how wiping the server would change anything. unless there are some rule changes one guild would rise to the top again and everything would be right were it is now.
same with the team server. one team would be the overwhelming favorite (evil) and zerg.
The only difference might be the top guild changes. Nothing stopping that from happening now, but the players. Not sure everyone needs to lose everything so a few players have an easier chance to become new top dog.

That's the whole point of a cyclical server. Firegiants like Farzo will stay huddled in fear of PvP with his 100 man zerg on the permanent server while the new server sees 700 players at peak. Those who care about their characters after three months each of classic, kunark and velious can follow their characters when they get copied onto the permanent server. Those of us who like PvP and not sitting in mom's basement hoping for that sixth epic will roll new toons after the wipe.

Your plan seems to be
1) wipe server
2) ?????
3) profit
Your plan lacks any mechanic from preventing the same outcome from happening.

Not sure why people expected velious to be different. These guys have owned the server for a year now. A lot of them owned the server as nihilum as well. Why wouldn't they be going all out with an expansion release finally giving them upgrades?
The hardcore players have been raiding for 2 years with no real upgrades. People really expected them to share loot with people that cane over from blue 2 months ago?
Thr people upset might need to just accept the game isn't as fun as you want it to be and let it go.

i was in fresh for a bit and only saw max once, i didnt see him participating in any exp groups, mini raids or anything
he did however provoke everyone on this forum and spit toxic messages out all day / night despite being told to stop by most of the guild.
had it not been for max perhaps things would have been better, i had joined because i had faith in gardur and slowly building a guild with players that have a proper attitude would be better then inviting anyone with a heartbeat in the longrun.
but what do i know?
Hahaha too true. There were some truly cringeworthy moments in Max's forum questing. Most of us active enough to make raids regularly probably recognized that he was a time bomb waiting to explode and ruin the good thing we had going.
Then he did.
Was a fun ride while it lasted. It's a strange thing how a guild lead by one of the most mentally unstable players on the server ended up attracting some of the nicest and most well-balanced people left on the box.

Back when this server started, it had something like 800 players. Every week after, it got lower and lower. The reason? The exp was so slow, it took days to level 4-5. Lots of people left after that.
Other factors included strict rules, favoritism etc but most of all, the players themselves. Happens every and any server.

if you want a balanced teams server you have to make it so that if a faction has more than 5% than the lowest populated faction at our above level 20, you shut down the ability to make characters for that faction until the numbers correct themselves.

They tried that on EQ2 and it worked out terribly (from a teams aspect). It basically became the only faction an end game raiding guild could be on due to the fact they could contest all 3 factions for open world spawns and had access to all race/class combos. It had its own charm, but it definitely undermined the entire idea of teams to begin with - your team became your guild, just like a FFA server.

I expect this would happen yea. In my idea undermining the idea of 'teams' isn't a bad thing, I just think its a bad idea in general on a small population box. It wasn't even that great on live with xteaming guilds eventually forming.

I sorta proposed this idea to devn00b/image. A seasonal approach sorta like D3 does, with each season having some different wrinkle. Maybe season 1, guk and solB are level 10-20 dungeons and Unrest/CB are lvl 40 dungeons, befallen is a raid zone, etc. Just do stuff like that - it doesn't mess with the core game all that much but gives some replayability. Maybe season 2 there are no clerics. Season 3 everyone has to play a human. Season 4 is level capped at 40. Season 5 you only can play hybrids.
Just spitballin' here.
Season 5 you only can play hybrids.
