If anybody else gets bored of P1999, why don't you try out Avalon, the oldest online RPG in existence? It's a text-based world, where players can build cities, become gods, and create their own guilds.

Here's the link: http://www.avalon-rpg.com/play/

I just started a bard named Moltro if anybody else is interested in playing, hit me up!

I know for certain that the oldest online RPG predates 1989.

If you are referring to MUDD, ok, otherwise I am curious.

Is this not a MUDD?

I think you meant to say longest running online RPG, not oldest online RPG. There were MUDs being played by modem around 1980 on university campuses. They've just been shut down since then and Avalon is still around. As a long time MUDder myself I'm shocked I've never given this one a try.

Interesting sidebar: I was poking around a random PVP MUD I found called Duris and noted some similarities between the MUD and EQ. Not the routine stuff (HP, Mana, sit to regain health) but things like only being able to memorize so many spells at a time. My observation was met with some Lols and one person explained to me that Duris had split with another MUD called Sojourn back in it's earlier days. One of the main designers (edit: player, not designer) of Sojourn was Brad Mcquaid. It all goes full circle. #potatochips

for the sake of my autism, I'll mention that gemstone is still running and pre-dates this game by a year! #project1988

Sick. I wonder why Wikipedia says Avalon is the longest running?

Just for the sake of clarity...

Avalon has been running since November 1989 with entirely unbroken continuity including its persona file, locations, inventory, data, skills etc in every single way. This differs from Gemstone which on February 1 1990 launched Gemstone III and required all existing characters to restart from scratch. This may be a small distinction but it's an important one since no-one who created a Gemstone I character in 1988 could still log into the game and find that character in tact. Compare this to Avalon whose first mortal Zaphod (Created November 1989) can and still does log in even today, almost 26 years later.

I'd also mention that while the Gemstone series has been running since 1989, the games have been rebranded, refurbished and given different names (I II III IV) which if anything are remakes / sequels than direct continuous worlds. Such that even Gemstone's Wiki marks their continuity as having begun in February 1990.

The best thing about this post is that you made an account just to post it. You must be a serious MUDder. What MUDs did you play on?

Still not older then one my of favorite Online games ever predecessor, now known as Legends of Kesmai. Previously known as Islands of Kesmai, started in 1985, people paid per the minute to play :)

Edit: added video about it

I've played Avalon passionately for 8 years, played some of the IRE games for a few years and WOTMUD for a bit too. A friend of mine stumbled on this thread and pointed me to it :)

Tried other MUDs in the past but this is pretty interesting by comparison, not to mention its playable on everything.

I've visisted many MUDs over the years and played some of htem. There're still a lot of people playing them. I did visit the Avalon website. The game claimed to have everything--housing/armies/pve/pvp/etc. But I could tell it was old. I had mixed feelings. I also got the impression nobody was playing it.

I'll think about it. Can the OP give any more information about the game?
