I recall it being a real pain to get spells like Torpor, Pox of Bertoxx as a shaman because these spells only dropped in the era appropriate content.

Then there's this I found on Allakhazam which reinforced my opinion. Sontalak discussion. http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=6466

There are a few dragons of westwastes currently set to drop Kunark spells.

If they should be removed, more input would be nice. Anyone else?

This was brought up many months ago, a select few npcs in WW should drop kunark spells. Here is a post from awhile back about esorpa dropping kunark spells.

Woudl like to add that YES all of the rare Kunark spells NOW DROP IN VELIOUS, have seen torpor, Winds of Gelid, and many other drop from Harla Dar, Klnadicar, Zlandicar, so finally Sony did something right on spells.

Discussion on ChardokB revamp where they mention that Velious dragons now drop Kunark spells: http://www.graffe.com/forums/showthread.php?7500-CharB-spell-drops

Loot tables all over seem to have been changed, we got flaming sword of xuzl of sontalak the other day. Other kunark spells seem to be dropping in velious too.

Patch notes saying they increased the drop rate on kunark spells because the chance to get them is slimmer with new content. http://www.waringmcmarrin.com/?page_id=54

This part in particular is telling. It's not "increased number of mobs that drop kunark spells" it's "increased drop rate to coincide with (less raid mobs dying that drop kunark spells)". So, couple months into velious, kunark raid mobs have spell drops increased. Until that point velious mobs don't drop kunark spells.

10/26/01 1:42:00 pm That is late 2001. Maybe it should only be Esorpa since she's on RingofScale?

More input desired. I don't want Kunark spells dropping if they shouldn't.

Not sure why but osme of the level 60 Kunark spells ahve eben dropping off WW named dragons fo a while now. GCH reportedly has been a common one off of them.

Pre-2003, but still 2002. Comments on Harla Dar dropping 60 Kunark spells. Plus some confusion on this. It is mentioned it was an addition at some point, but no indication as to where.

PS - Those cleric boards enrage me when I read OVER and OVER how OP Druids are and how badly Clerics have it in Velious...

Some snipits from those forums below:

"I'm taking the liberty to X-post this on eqnecro, graffe.com and eqcleric, since it concerns us all.

When Kunark was released, it was expected that we'd stay there and level from 50-60, and most did this even though there are some spots in the old world that supports 50+ xp. Spell drops were balanced accordingly.

When Velious was release, casting classes got new spells, but most were not that cool. Now we suddenly had two continents for 50+ xp. And melee loot, as usual, got a huge boost in power in Velious, while casters still have to go to Kunark for spells.

Luclin introduces the same situation a third time. Now we get a 3rd expansion with even cooler loot, some new spells (most rather silly in my opinion but I'm sure some are quite nice). But we STILL need to go to Kunark for Kunark spells, and Velious for Velious spells, while the melees can happily get all the nifty stuff from Luclin, since they automagically get discs when they level.

The effect: its getting increasinly harder to obtain the Kunark dropped spells.

There are many solutions to this problem:

- Verant could simply label Kunark a legacy area and throw us a bone by putting all Kunark spells on merchants.

- Simply increase Kunark spell drops. Velious spells are, I might add, less of a problem since they generally drop more.

- Verant could put Kunark spells on merchants to make it a bit easier for us, and instead pull slightly improved Kunark spells on the Kunark dragons / bosses. I like this idea myself.

- Verant could random spells across several continents, so that we can get Velious spells in Kunark, Kunark spells on Luclin, etc."

"Well, they sorta thought of this already...

Kunark spells (at least 58+) drop off SoV dragons. Not sure if the 55-57 spells drop off them but I do know the 58+ do. I got Banishment of Shadows from Sontalak. I've seen this on several occasions so it wasn't a fluke.

Perhaps some of the ubermobs in SoL will drop Kunark spells as well.

As to why SoV spells are more common... they aren't. Look at the general drop rate. Maybe one spell in 10 or so kills. Same in Kunark and Luclin. The difference is Kunark introduced 19 NPC dropped spells. SoV introduced 4 and SoL inroduced 5. Also consider that there are more areas to get 55+ spells in SoV and SoL. Kunark only offered the Juggs/reets area and Skyfire."

You can read more of the discussion there but it does look like spells dropped via continent they are from, with some possibly dropping off velious dragons.

That's from late 2001 just after/around Luclin launch. I think it's safe to say the WW Dragons who currently drop Kunark spells should do so in era, it's just a matter of when that switch got flipped.

If I were a betting man I would say March to coincide with the increased drop rate patch (3 months).

***Fan Faire Reminder***

Registration for the San Diego Fan Faire closes on Wednesday, March
28th, and we are running out of spaces. Once all the spaces are taken,
we will not be accepting any further registrations (or walk-ins). So if
you plan to attend sign up before someone else gets your spot. Head
over to www.everquest.com to register.

*** Patch Day ***

*Spell Changes and Additions*

- A new teleportation spell has been added to the game for both Druids
and Wizards. These are self-only gate spells to the Dreadlands. These
spells should be available on the more exclusive spell vendors in
Norrath.

- Increased the drop rate on some Kunark spells to coincide with the
narrowing of the creatures carrying those spells as the game evolves.

- Wizards now have access to a new type of spell that only works on
certain types of target. Generically called 'bane' spells, a few are
now available in the game. May your quest for such spells be
successful.

*Item Changes*

- Changed the effects on the Singing Steel Boots and Greaves. After a
fair amount of concern from players, we have removed the summon food
and water effects from these items. They have been replaced with
modified versions of Aria of the Eagles (boots) and Appalling Screech
(greaves).

- The Incandescent Bracer can now be worn on the wrist rather than the
waist.

- The Incarnadine Breastplate must now be worn to activate.

- Changed spell effects on Pauldrons of the Fearsome and Fearsome
Shield to right click and worn to activate.

*Bug Fixes*

- Fixed a bug that was causing some players to zone into the Warrens at
the wrong location.

- Corrected an error with the Bixie Sword Blade, changing its delay
from 6 to 16.

- Fixed a bug where Iskar Monks were unable to Feign Death after
Foraging.

- Kodiaks in the Great Divide are now seen as animals.

- Toxdil, the wandering rogue poison vendor, will now sell to
characters even when he is away from his home.

*Enhancements*

- Fixed a problem that occurred when players mistyped /guild. Typing
/guildd in the chat window is the shortcut for typing /guilddelete.
/guildd now has a confirmation box so that such an error should no
longer lead to the accidental deletion of a guild.

- Added /showspelleffects. Using this toggle ('on' or 'off') a player
can turn on or off the display of particle effects for spells. This
will only affect spells, not world effects like waterfalls or weapon
particle effects. This should allow you to turn off many of the effects
that hamper rendering performance, inducing effects of spells, while
still being able to see some of the awesome effects, like those on
certain paladin weapons...

- Added server-side filtering for chat and combat messages. This will
allow you to turn off guild chat, shouts, auctions, oocs, 'my misses',
'others misses', 'others hits', 'attacker misses me', PC spells (all
options), NPC spells and Bard songs (all options) at the server instead
of at the client. This can reduce that amount of data sent to you over
your connection, and can help those with slower connections with better
performance and connectivity.

- Ships will now be announcing their arrival in most zones. They will
also be announcing their progress to any zone they travel through. Any
of those zones that they are not currently making announcements in will
be added in the next patch or two.

- Shift - Left and Shift - Right will now repeat in the chat window.
This means that when editing what you've typed, you can just hold down
the Shift and Left Arrow keys and the cursor will move left until it
reaches the beginning of the line or until you release the keys.

- The spell slot number will now show up in front of the spell name
when you press Alt to cast a spell using the Alt-Spell Number method.

- View perspective in wolf form has been fixed. First-person view will
now be on level with the wolf, rather than a few feet above it. At the
same time, perceiving other players in wolf form will appear to be
standing on the ground instead of floating a few feet above it.

- Trade skill success and failure messages will be sent to the
craftsperson's group instead of just the craftsperson, as long as the
craftsperson is using the proper ingredients. Failure of the craftsman
to use the proper ingredients will result in no failure message being
sent.

- In order to prevent a few trade scams, money can no longer be removed
from a trade window. You will have to cancel the trade and start over
to adjust the amount of money involved in the trade.

- We're now sending hitpoint updates to the casters of direct damage
spells no matter how far away they are when the spell lands. This will
allow those casters that try to stand as far back as possible to get
updates even when their range indicates that the messages should be
surpressed.

*Quest*

Several new quests have been added as well, so don't be afraid to talk
to the folks of Norrath, they might have new information for you.

This is very important but this was done for Kunark mobs that drop spells in general. I remember Wizard boxes farming certain mobs for Kunark spells to corner the market.

There were definitely more (increased number of) spell drops so this is correct.

All the links I went through last night were inconclusive. I heard recommendations that if you want kunark spells you need to go to kunark and farm the world bosses or vp trash then the next post would say they got divine intervention(kunark spell) off sontalak.

My assumption is they were really rare off raid spell dropping dragons in WW with esorpa dropping 55-58 kunark spells. I don't think esorpa is even 60, which is normally the cut off except in the case of Fay.
