So I found p99 the other day and was delighted. I had said in a recent post somewhere else how the hardcore-nature of classic EQ was attractive, because it was hard, you had to work for it and corpse runs where really tricky sometimes.

I had forgotten just how hard, to the point of tedious, it was. :)

I started in Qeynos, because of nostalgia. It really isn't the centre of the world, but p99 is all about nostalgia, so what the heck.

Didn't really spend time to re-familiarise myself with the UI before I started to wander around. Of course the first thing I did was fall down the sewers and drown. just like 15 years ago. I am so used to the fluid movement of newer things I play that it took me several hours to relearn.

I forgot how bloody dark it is in tunnels, at night, when it rains, on a human. Thank Karana for fire beatle eyes and gamma correction. I zoned in and out of North/South Qyenos tunnel a few times, before I fixed the gamma and turn down the light in the room.

I also forgot how tedious it is to be a shit-melee caster before you get meditate. Level 5-8 in Qyenos Hills is loooong. I had forgotten how far between the mobs it was. And Blackburrow is yet a bit too hard solo as a level 5 with gear you pick up on the way.

Enough griping. At least people you meet are friendly. See you around, if I can hack it (with a cracked staff).

Love return stories like this, I remember I started a halfling for my first time when I got back into eq on p99, ran into the river and forgot you can't look up and swim in 3rd person view, then I moved back to 1st person and it all came pouring back in how to play the game, CS style with mouse look and straifing.

Much classic feels, enjoy your time!

Ah, you can't look up in 3rd person view. That was it. I played entirely in 1sr person originally, but has since then switched in other games.

How do you do propper mouse look?

Can't swim in 3rd person?

Page up/down by default will have you look up/down (swim up/down) while in 3rd person.

Thanks. Still getting used to that. I am so used to mouselook.

Naxy - You can mouselook by holding down the right mouse button (in first person).

Yeah, sorry, I meant stear entirely by mouse. Mouselook here seem to limit me to a 90? degree arc in front of me. Maybe I missed a setting?

I seem to remember doing something like that once years ago by accident. You have to hold down one mouse button (left?) to make the character start moving forward and then move the view around/steer with the other (right?). Or maybe the middle mouse button was involved at some point, but I think that may just be the zoom...

Ok, thanks friends. I'll try that.

Further adventures last night involved grinding, grinding and grinding some more. Did some "awesome" wolf hide armour quests for a few more AC. /s (I love the fact that every AC point matters.)

Got jumped by a putrid skelly and to my surprise it was an easy kill. But darn it sucks to not be able to med yet. I'll need to grind to lvl eight ASAP.

So today I had a very nice person travel far (well he could port, but nevertheless) to come and buff and sow me. He just asked which zone I was in and showed up without me asking. You know who you are. Thanks!

I also helped an "evil wizard" do some shopping and he gave me a nice tip. Spell purchasing secured next level when there are new spells, nice!

Level eight is in sight. Qeynos hills is a bit overrun by bards. Bards, bards, everywhere and nobody groups. Everybody soloing. Oh well, I suppose they'll want buffs and rezzes soon enough. Maybe they'll group then. :D

So, finally today, level 8 and meditation. Not being able to meditate effectively was a bit limiting to say the least. But not only did I get level 8, 9 came easily as well. How come you say? Gnoll teeth. I took 13 sets of three teeth, which gave about 11% of a level at level 9, at the warrior guild in Halas. This probably makes it worth killing the green gnolls you come across too, for their teeth.

So, I am now back sitting on my butt most of the time, the battle cleric thing compared to nuking undead, well it is a good distraction. But with crap gear it becomes tedious to whack gnolls that refuse to die.

I had the pleasure of grouping with a ranger and a shaman in Blackburrow, and was reminded by them that casting Center, rather than healing was probably mana efficient. I had forgotten about that.

This day I met a lot of really nice people. Chanters, druids, shamen, all stopped what they were doing and buffed or helped CC a mob to save a newbie. Nice folks. Also nice to play with people who know what they are doing and go about it in a nice way.

Thanks folks!

Ah, nice to see things are working out for you. This game has always amazed me that even though I have played it for 15 years or more, I still learn new things in game, and on here. Cool Beans. :p

Oops.

I fell down the pit and died. At least I didn't die in the water. Managed to get up, and ran for as far as DA lasted. I forgot to do a /loc, so it is either north of the pit water on the map or south east of it. The gear doesn't really matter, but I had like 30 plat. Haha.

Now, I need to find a corpse recovery crew this week. I love Classic.

Did you encounter a bridge while you were running?

Sorn

Oh wait, I found it. -140, -370, with a bunch of giant snakes.

Naxy
07-13-2015, 06:28 PM
Sorn, that is really awesome of you. I am travelling for a few days, and will see if I can recover the sack of stupid when I get back.

It was rather funny. I was so careful, and then a moments stupidity and over the edge I went. I could have memmed gate and gotten out, before all the mobs got me, but I paniced. :)

Naxy
07-16-2015, 12:45 PM
Now i just need to find someone to guard my back when trying to get down to the giant snakes. It doesn't help that one is practically blind down there as a human.

Anyone free for a CR? :)

kaev

If you can get more or less directly above it (use the loc info from Sorn), I am pretty sure that /corpse ignores z-axis here just as it did on live.

Naxy
07-16-2015, 01:28 PM
Thanks Kaev for your tip about the z-axis.

Thanks even more to Sorn/Tadhg for being such a hero and run all the way to Blackburrow to come and invis me so I could do the CR safely. I am in your debt good sire!

Sorn
07-16-2015, 03:46 PM
You can rez me later. ;)

There did not seem to be much success with dragging from the top level. I don't know if there's just no spot directly above that part of BB or if it really does take z-axis into consideration.

Naxy
07-16-2015, 05:50 PM
I dont think there was a spot in range on the first level.

So, you really wanted to hear about how it goes, right? No? Never mind then, I will just talk to this decaying skeleton then.

There are a lot of gnolls without teeth. Still at level 11 I got 9% xp for three gnoll teeth. So, even when the gnolls are green and give no xp it is worth farming teeth. It gets harder when it gets a bit crowded in Blackburrow, but I don't really hunt at prime time.

A very kind soul dropped by with a weapon made for adventurers with way higher experience than me. Thanks! It nearly felt like cheating whacking gnolls with that thing. Fortunately it looks fairly modest, and could be any old piece of wood. Gotta keep up appearances. ;)

Dinged 12 I did too. Now I am pondering if it is time to go to North Karana and hunt willowisps for lightstones and greater lightstones, or if I can grind out two more levels in BB for the spells that come at 14. Decisions decisions.

Hold down both mouse buttons to run. Then you can look around just by moving the mouse.
I think...
But then I play on a laptop with no mouse, so what do I know?

Naxy

Eh, so I tried my luck in North Karana. Bloody ass long run. Fortunately with nothing much along the southern shore of West Karana. I move towards the guard tower, next to the gypsy camp. Kill a willowisp along the way. And another one, well nearly. A griffenne, or something decided I looked like dinner and there I was. Back in Qeynos.

I ran to the bank to get my spare lantern and was not only SOWed by a kind druid. Pretty soon I found myself ported to North Karana and given a charred guardian shield and some tunic with wisdom on*. You are too kind my lady!

I think I will come back when I am 14 and at least able to bind myself in a suitable location.

* That is best in slot pre planar gear, according to the wiki. That experience is not classic! ;)

Sorn

Bind Affinity will set you free!

Naxy
08-03-2015, 06:11 PM
Yep. Bound on the bridge to East Karana, for the treck to the Commonlands.

Damn, West Karana is big and empty. Saw like two mobs on the whole way across. Nothing like what I am used to these day in other universes. North Karana had a hill giant wandering about. So I decided it was time to get a bind nearby.

Pondering where a good grouping place is next and near undead for soloing at level 14. Maybe Befallen?

Sorn
08-03-2015, 06:29 PM
Befallen is great, the only tricky part is the keys. You may have to amass a group outside of the zone before going in because it's relatively unpopulated.

kaev
08-03-2015, 11:29 PM
Oasis is the cliche destination at that level for a reason, lotsa roaming mobs, mix of live and undead, often plenty of others around to group with.

So, today I logged in just next to the entrance to Befallen. Right on top of a Nightshade Giant. Ouch. I had half a bubble of health left when I managed to zone into Befallen.

Later I wanted to try to solo in Befallen and promptly got invited to a group with my old guildie Lagmos. Awesome. Really nice group and we camped on the second floor for a few hours. It was great. I even got a drop of an arm piece from the shadow knight and a gift of a shoulder piece with wisdom on it and a guild invite to a small guild! p99 at its best I think.

Thanks everyone!

That's some bad luck about the giant! Sounds like it's going swimmingly for you, though! :)

Naxy

Yep, decided to not bind at the entrance to Befallen again. :D

Now in the East Commonlands tunnel. I got the pieces for the boots of the reliant (Temple of Ro quests), and the I realised that a Platinum bar is 100 pp. that is more cash than I have, and saving for lvl 19 spells. if that wasn't enough you have to go to Lake Rathe with one of the pieces, to hand in. Oh well.

So I hung out in Befallen again with new found friends. Essentially made a level today an am nearly 16 now. Had some "oh shit" moments when an Elf Skeleton showed up, with the tanks atk, and the skelly was red to me, and everyone else. But we got through it. Another good day.

The grouping is the best. And I never realised it, but someone mentioned it in group today, sometimes camping a spot and having stuff pulled to you isn't half bad, as you can sit an talk nonsense with each other whilst the monk/bard does all the work. Good times. ;)

Oh I forgot to say before that, when on my way to Freeport, I thought rushing through High Hold Pass, past the orcs as a level 14 would be fine. I mean I have Invulnerability and all. Right, right?

Wrong. It was long since I died so quickly and at night. I had bound at the other side of the zone line, but up there at night, I was literally blind. Fortunately some kind souls dragged my corpse to the zone line and cleared up the orcs. And my guardian angle druid (how does she show up like that when I need it?) dropped by and invised me, for the rest of the run through.

Now back to the current timeline again.

Dinged 16 from some soloing ghouls and lesser mummies in East Commonlands, between doing other stuff. It is interesting how much time is spent by people selling stuff. Even off prime play time. But it is irrelevant as I have no plat anyway.

Drive-by-sow is nice. Thanks Druids.

Sounds like the usual HHP experience! Don't forget your Halo of Light spell, though :)

By the way, Cloudy Potion will give you invisibility. It's 10-11pp but worth it for clerics who have to run through those types of places.

Yes, it took me until level 30 or so the first time around until I even heard about the invis potions.

The halo of light is of course wonderful for this, but when I died in HHP I lost level 14 and couldn't use it. I am sure it thought me something. :)

Oh, I forgot about xp loss at death... reading this post definitely brought back memories as a noob falling off a cliff while following a friend and needing help from higher levels to retrieve gear..... or trying to do Fear for the first time with a PUG, what a mess.
